Collecting a Pediatric Urine Specimen

SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT


Urine collector of appropriate size and type Water for cleansing
Washcloth Towel for drying
Gloves

RECOMMENDED TECHNIQUE E S NP Comments

1. Offer the child fluids half an hour before


applying the collector bag. __________________________________
2. Gather needed supplies. Check physicians
order. __________________________________
3. Wash hands and put on gloves. __________________________________
4. Explain to caregivers what is to be done
and why. __________________________________
5. Position the child on his or her back with
the legs apart and knees bent (frog-leg
position). You may need another adults
assistance to position the child properly so
you can accurately apply the collector. __________________________________
6. Gently cleanse and dry the childs perineal
area. Use plain water and a wash cloth to
cleanse the labia or penis. Remove any
powder or lotion. __________________________________
7. Peel off the backing of the adhesive sur-
face, and apply the bag to the childs per-
ineum. For girls, sealing from the bottom
up to the pubis is easiest; do the opposite
with boys. Be sure to smooth the skin dur-
ing application by gently pulling on it as
needed. __________________________________
8. For boys, place the penis in the bag and
apply the bag to the pubis and scrotum. In
an uncircumcised boy, be sure the foreskin
is in its normal position before the bag is
applied. __________________________________
9. Cover the bag with a loose-fitting diaper
or underpants. __________________________________
10. Offer fluids after you apply the bag. __________________________________
11. Check the bag every 15 to 30 minutes to
see if the child has voided. __________________________________
12. After the child has voided, gently remove
the bag as soon as possible. __________________________________
13. Cleanse the childs perineum. __________________________________
14. Apply a clean diaper or underpants. __________________________________

15. Place the urine in a specimen cup through


the emptying port provided on the outside
of the bag. __________________________________
16. Discard waste appropriately. Discard
gloves. __________________________________
17. Wash hands. __________________________________
18. Send the specimen to the laboratory, fol-
lowing facilitys policy. __________________________________
19. Document that the specimen was
obtained. Note the urines amount and
characteristics and how the child tolerated
the procedure. __________________________________
