Identify and/or calculate the following quantities and give descriptions or show work for how
you found them:
a. Sample size: 35
b. Sample mean: 383.63 We found this by entering our set of data
into our calculator, then pressing 1 var stat.
c. Sample standard deviation: 89.39 We also found this using 1-
var stat.
d. Degrees of freedom: 34 We found this by using the formula
d.f.=1-n so we took our sample size of 35 and subtracted 1, leaving us with 34.
e. Critical values for 90%, 95%, and 99% confidence levels: 90%
is 1.697, 95% is 2.042, and 99% is 2.75. We found these by using the t- table.
f. Maximal margin of error for 90%, 95%, and 99% confidence
levels: We found that a 90% maximal margin of error is 25.53. The maximal
margin of error for 95% confidence level is 30.67. Lastly, the maximal margin of
error for a 99% confidence level is 41.13. We found these by using the Sigma
unknown formula.
g. Determine 90%, 95%, and 99% confidence intervals for
(the population mean):
90%= 383.63-24.86<<383.63+24.86
95%= 383.63-29.6<<383.63+29.6
99%= 383.63-38.98<<383.98+38.98

Our sample size of Widths of Littleneck Clams (mm) in Garrison Bay is 35. We found this
by simply counting the number of data points we have. After this, we calculated the sample
mean to be 383.63. We found this by entering our set of data into our calculator, then pressing 1
var stat. Sample standard deviation was found by using 1-var stat also and we found that it was
89.39. Next, we found our degrees of freedom by using the formula d.f.=1-n. We ended up
calculating that the degrees of freedom was 34. We found this by taking our sample size of 35
and subtracting 1, leaving us with 34. After this, we calculated the critical values for 90%, 95%,
and 99%. We calculated these by using the formula E=Zc(SD/ ). Using this formula, we
plugged in our values and got 24.86 for a 90% critical value, 29.6 for a 95% critical value and
38.98 for a 99% critical value. We then calculated the maximal margin of error for 90%, 95%,
and 99% confidence levels. We found that a 90% maximal margin of error is 25.53. The
maximal margin of error for 95% confidence level is 30.67. Lastly, the maximal margin of error
for a 99% confidence level is 41.13. We found these by using the Sigma unknown formula that
starts with E=. Lastly, for our chapter 8 project, we Determined 90%, 95%, and 99% confidence
intervals for (the population mean). To do this, We used the mean of our set of data,
subtracted it from the E that we calculated, and did the same, but added them. After doing this,
we found the following confidence intervals for mu: 90%= 383.63-24.86<<383.63+24.86
This means that the size of clams with a 90% confidence interval would be from
358.77mm to 408.49mm. If you wanted to have a 95% confidence interval, the sizes
would spread out further and would end up being between 354.03mm to 413.23mm.
Lastly, to have a 99% confidence interval would include clam sizes 344.65mm to
422.96mm.
