South Slocan Bridge Replacement
Preparations to replace the bridge in South Slocan with
rock fill and a pedestrian tunnel are underway.
Motorists will notice that trees have been removed close
to the bridge. Crews have also felled trees at Beasley Bluffs
to prepare for a significant rock cut. The blasted rock will
provide road fill for the South Slocan project and result
in additional safety benefits on Highway 3A by increas-
ing sight lines, expanding the clear zones and improving
snow storage.
The road design will also include wider shoulders and
improved intersection designs on adjacent roads. The
pedestrian underpass will create future trail connectiv-
ity in the area. Additional improvements to the existing
trail network will result from the project, including new
signage and a new trailhead at the end of South Slocan
Station Road, as well as asphalt paving along the rail trail
from South Slocan to Pass Creek Road.
Construction on the project is expected to finish by

Play it safe when boating or swimming this summer. Our reservoirs can be
enjoyable recreation destinations, as long as we are being safe.

Because the water in our reservoirs is utilized for flood control and the
production of electricity, reservoir water levels can change daily. Reservoir
users should be aware that changing water levels can hide submerged hazards,
particularly in shallow water near the shoreline. It is important that visitors be
aware of these potential dangers and stay safe. Canadian Hydrographic Charts
are an excellent reference for boaters and are available at charts.gc.ca.

Boating, fishing and swimming above or below a dam or generating station

can be dangerous. For everyones safety, obey all warning signs and stay out
of restricted areas.

Bikes Not Pipes Kootenays
Rides Again!
The Bikes Not Pipes Kootenay bike tour is happening
for the fourth straight year. Its a promotional ride for
active transportation and a future less dependent on fos-
sil fuels. We ride from Nelson to Winlaw Thursday, on to
New Denver Friday, over to Kaslo Saturday and back to
Nelson on Sunday.
Everyone is welcome to ride with us for all or part of
the journey. We plan to have some stop overs en route
to engage with school students to share our message
and have some fun learning about ecological footprint
together.
Ive done this Bikes Not Pipes ride three years running,
theres no experience like it, going through spectacular
mountains for a great cause. Awesome team work, says
John Alton one of the main organizers. We are con-
cerned about climate change and air pollution and wish
to inspire people to bike, walk or take transit whenever
possible, he says.
We can have a great time without fossil fuels in
our part of the world. Its one thing we can do to
help our whole planet put out less carbon. Like
BC environmentalist Guy Dauncey says, if its not
fun its not sustainable, says Keith Wiley who has
also ridden every year.
Unless there is pouring rain, departure will
be at 9:30 am Thursday, May 25 at the Railtown
parking lot, near the electric vehicle charging sta-
tion. Join us there and ride with us for any part of
the 220 km round trip.
