Figure 2. 120/240 V ac, Single Phase, 3-Wire Power System

Figure 1 shows a 3-phase wye (star), 4-wire distribution system with regional
voltages, also with neutral ground (earth).
Figure 2 shows the 120/240 V ac, single phase, 3-wire distribution system with
center-tapped ground, prevalently used in North America. .

Voltage ranges are customarily denoted with a dash(-), such as 100-240 V ac.
Separated voltage ranges are customarily denoted with a slash (/)such as 100-
120/200-240 V ac. However, to denote multiple-voltage/multiple-wire systems,
the slash is used to denote the difference between the two voltages.

Phases are denoted as 3ph or 3-phase. Number of wires are denoted like
4-W or 4-wire

For the following, state the electrical ratings as clearly as possible, using
necessary terms of voltage, phases, number of wires, current, and
frequency.

1. [10 Points] (a) If you have electrical utilization equipment that needs three (3)
120 V ac phases, no neutral, draws 12 A per phase, what would the electrical
rating be (see Slide 14-16) .

(b) Is it necessary to say the number of wires?

2. [10 Points] (a) If you have single-phase electrical utilization equipment that
can be powered from either 208 V or 240 V in North America, or 230 V in Europe,
and draws 10 A, what would the electrical rating be?(see Slides 14 through 16)

(b) Is it necessary to say the number of phases?

3. [10 Points] (a) If you have a three-wire electrical utilization equipment that
uses North American line-to-line voltages of either 208 V or 240 V, 16 A, and a
line-to-neutral load of 10 A, how will you electrically rate this utilization
equipment in voltage, number of wires, current, and frequency? (see Slides 14
through 16)

(b) Is this single or multiple phase?

Bonus [5 Points] For the example in 3(a), what would be the neutral current for
the utilization equipment?

4. [10 Points] Using Electric Current Abroad (on Moodle), what is the 3-phase
voltage and frequency of the power system used in:
a) Casablanca, Morocco

b) Korea, Republic of (South Korea)

c) Australia

d) Japan

5. [5 Points] For Figure 1, Let IA= 100 0 = 100 + j0

IB=40 120 = 20 + 34.64

Ic= 60 240 = 30 j51.96
