The study is on Phytoremediation of As and Cr and one of the major

objective is to identiff As
and Cr hyperaccumulator plants from four different plant specie s viz.,pteris
vitt:ata,. Mimosa
pttdiccr' Veleveria zizcrttioides and Eichhorniu ra,s,sipus under different
concentration of As and
Cr, efforts have been made in this study to cletermirre As and Cr accunrulation
and tolerance for
phytoremediation application. The objectives of the study are to
determine As and Cr tolerance
of selected plant species, dose dependent response, metal accumulation
in plant biomass and
removal efficiency from soil and water, molecular characterization
of As tolerance and Isolation,
chatacterization of metal tolerant rhizosphere microbes habitat in metal
rich soil and assess role
of plant & microbes in metal accumulation and to assess As/Cr removal from contaminated
water/soil using plant system.

The hypothesis is stated well and the objectives are relevant to the hypothesis.

The review of literature chapter is extensive and has covered all the aspects
that are relevant to
the study and the observations that have been recorded in the study. The review is
comprehensive and informative.

All the experiments have been thought out *.il and is well documented in the thesis, the
materials and methods section of all the experiments are given in detail,

time to bring out the results of the each of the experiment in an exemplary manner. The
illustrations are of very good quality and well thought out and the tables are self explanatory and
done well.

The overall study and the individual experiments are well planned and very well executed, the
study has been conducted in a good manner and the result have been well documented in the
thesis and the explanations for the results observed is well brought out in the discussion,
conclusion chapter is concise and is very well written and brings outthe findings of the study in
a nutshell. The references are complete and relevant to the study.

The study has come out with some novel findings and I trust it will have practical applicability in
phytoremediation. The following findings can have useful applications.

The existence of inbuilt inherent mechanism in Pteris viltala to cope up with As stress.

The suitability of Pteris viltqlct for As and Cr contaminated field soil and water in the field is
very high

Pilot scale treatment system for As phytoextraction frorn l0L, 200L contaminated water and pot
cultures study with contaminated soil is a good innovation.

The pilot scale development of Cr phytoremediation also can be followed up

There are some minor grammar and syntax errors that needs to be corrected

Please check where are how the symbol -& ampersand should be used in thesis and correct
accordingly

The thesis is acceptable in the present form for the award of the Ph.D. degree

Questions to be asked to the candidate during the oral examination (use additional pages if
needed)

1. How well the present available technology in.the area of Phytoremediation of Cr have
been put to practical use in India in areas like Kanpur and Vellore.
2. What are the practical difficulties in this technology if we have to implement it in
leather tanning areas of the country?
3. ls it possible to engineer Cr reductase in plants, is there a possibility of developing
transgenic plants that can express specific Cr and As detoxifying enzymes.
4. What is the role of Sulphur metabolism in Cr uptake and transport
