Kinetics Graphs To Know

You need to be able to sketch, analyze, annotate and use (in explanations) several different types of
graphs.

Remember to LABEL THE AXES whenever you sketch any graph.

1. CONCENTRATION (of reactant) vs TIME GRAPHS

How can you use these graphs to find the average rate and the instantaneous rate at a
particular time for reaction?

How would you show the difference between a fast and a slow reaction?

What would be different for a reactions with the same reactant concentration, but different
amounts of limiting reactants?

Compare zero order, first order and second order concentration vs time graphs.

2. RATE vs CONCENTRATION GRAPHS

Compare zero order, first order and second order rate vs concentration graphs.

3. POTENTIAL ENERGY GRAPHS (ENTHALPY DIAGRAMS)

Draw a graph that shows: reactants, products, the activated complex (or transition state),
activation energy and enthalpy change. Show the effect of adding a catalyst.

4. MAXWELL-BOLTZMANN GRAPHS

Draw graphs to show: 1. the effect of temperature on rate

2. the effect of adding a catalyst

5. FACTORS AFFECTING RATES OF REACTION

Draw a [H2] vs time graph showing for a reaction Mg + 2HCl MgCl2 + H2 under these
conditions. Show both plots on the same graph.

HINT: Also thing about limiting reactants.

a) rx 1: 0.025 mol Mg, 50 mL 1.0 M HCl, 25C

rx 2: 0.025 mol Mg, 25 mL 1.0 M HCl, 25C
Chemistry 12 HL Unit 2 / IB Topics 6 and 16

b) rx 1: 0.025 mol Mg, 50 mL 1.0 M HCl, 25C

rx 2: 0.025 mol Mg, 50 mL 2.0 M HCl, 25C

c) rx 1: 0.025 mol Mg, 50 mL 1.0 M HCl, 25C

rx 2: 0.025 mol Mg, 50 mL 1.0 M HCl, 10C

6. FACTORS AFFECTING RATES OF REACTION

Draw a [CO2] vs time graph showing for the reaction

CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) MgCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

under these conditions. Show all plots on the same graph. HINT: Also thing about limiting
reactants.

rx 1: 0.010 mol CaCO3 (chips), 50 mL 1.0 M HCl, 25C

rx 2: 0.010 mol CaCO3 (powder), 50 mL 1.0 M HCl, 25C

rx 3: 0.010 mol CaCO3 (chips), 50 mL 2.0 M HCl, 25C

7. ARRHENIUS EQUATION GRAPH

Rewrite the Arrhenius equation (Table 1 of the Data Booklet) in the form that is used to
generate a linear graph.

Sketch and label the graph that you would use to find the activation energy of a reaction.
