Practice Problems - Hesss Law
1. What is Hesss Law?

2. Given these equations:

Eq 1 C(s) + 1/2 O2(g) CO(g) H1 = - 110.5 kJ
Eq 2 CO(g) + 1/2 O2(g) CO2(g) H2 = - 280.3 kJ

a) Write the equation for the formation of 1 mole of carbon dioxide gas from
carbon and oxygen gas.

b) Use the given equations to find the standard enthalpy of formation of carbon
dioxide gas (i.e. the enthalpy change for the reaction written in (a).)

3. Given these equations:

Eq 1 Fe2O3(s) + 3 CO(g) 2 Fe(s) + 3 CO2(g) H1 = - 6.39 kcal
Eq 2 CO(g) + 1/2 O2(g) CO2(g) H2 = -67.63 kcal

a) Find the heat of reaction for 2 Fe(s) + 3/2 O2(g) Fe2O3(s).

b) Convert your final answer in kJ. (1 kcal = 4.18 kJ)

c) If 2.50 kg of iron react in excess oxygen, how much heat is released?

Chemistry 11 HL Unit 5 / IB Topic 5.3

4. a) Write the equation for the combustion of methane (CH4).

b) Use these equations to find the molar heat of combustion of methane.

Eq 1 C(s) + O2(g) CO2(g) H1 = -393.5 kJ
Eq 2 H2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) H2O(l) H2 = -285.6 kJ
Eq 3 C(s) + 2 H2(g) CH4(g) H3 = -74.8 kJ

5. Given these equations:

Eq 1 2 NaCl(s) + H2O(l) 2 HCl(g) + Na2O(s) H1 = +507.31 kJ
Eq 2 NO(g) + NO2(g) + Na2O(s) 2 NaNO2(s) H2 = -427.14 kJ
Eq 3 NO(g) + NO2(g) N2O(g) + O2(g) H3 = -42.68 kJ
Eq 4 2 HNO2(l) N2O(g) + O2(g) + H2O(l) H4 = +34.35 kJ

Calculate the heat of reaction for HCl(g) + NaNO2(s) HNO2(l) + NaCl(s)

6. Use this enthalpy cycle to find the heat of reaction for the formation of methane (CH4) from its
elements (C and H2).
