Desert Storm

Desert Storm was a codename for the Operation Desert Shield and operation Desert

Storm. There was originally two phases of the war Desert Shield was the codename used for the

part leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia. Desert Storm was the actual

combat phase against the Iraqs invasion of Kuwait. This war was already planned for the worst

to happen. Saddam Hussein was just a part of the war and he was a major reason why the US got

involved in defending Kuwait. In efforts was it all necessary in the beginning before he ordered

his troops to invade Kuwait. Desert Storm led to the success of the US defending Kuwait and

defeating the Iraqi.

Some people ask the question what led to Desert Storm? It was a war on oil, it was

intended to go as planned but instead Saddam had to go and invade Kuwait. Saddam , the

dictator of Iraq, ordered his army across the border into tiny Kuwait. Kuwait is a major oil

supplier to the United States (ushistory.org) Saddams actions here led to many problems that

the US was trying to avoid. For instance the war and the cost were enormous, and casually

figure staggering (ushistory.org) While the war necessary, it was also really expensive. The

government didnt think about the outcome in the price.

The war had some people in the war that were specifically involved in the war. For

example Saddam Hussein grew up in a poor family and forced to steal eggs and chicken so that

his family could eat (ushistory.org) he also learned that as a young child he was interested in

guns. Then he was involved in an assassination attempt on a military leader in Iraq's

(History.org) from that point on as a young man he became a problem for the US. Other than that

alarmed by these actions, fellow arab powers such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt called on the

United states and other western nations to intervene. (history.com) With this call the US

answered and helped deter the Iraqis to make them leave most because most of them were

already dead or have already fled.

Many Americans think was it necessary involvement for the Operation Desert Storm and

think was it necessary and did it solve anything. Well the answer is yes, because Kuwait is our

major oil supplier outside of the US. it came to us that the United Nations could be used as an

instrument of force when necessary. (ushistory.org) So the US fought for the oil that we our

allied for to use and to also help and to answer the need to intervene for Kuwait. But eventually

President Bush declared a cease-fire on February 28, by that time, most Iraqi forces in Kuwait

had either surrendered or fled. (ushistory.org) Yes it solved the Iraqi forces from winning and

killing more Americans than they already did. 148 American were killed in the battle, hundreds

of thousands of Iraqi deaths. (ushistory.org) One of those death of the Iraqis was The Emirs

brother was killed leading the defense of the palace for more than 12 hours, out numbered by an

entire Iraqi division. His body was placed in front of a tank and ran over. (21)

The reason that Operation Desert Storm was noteworthy was because the United states

help Kuwait by defending Kuwait and defeating Iraqi forces and only 148 americans died in the

war. In the end the United States of America and Kuwait still have diplomatic relations and one

long history between each other. Nonetheless this war but dating all the way back to 1961 and

following its full independence from the United Nations. The United States supports Kuwait's

sovereignty, as well as the corporation's deep rooted between the two governments.
