Topic: Pythagoras Theorem 2

1. A boat sets out from a point A and sails south-east for 10 kilometres then north-
east for 24 kilometres. Find the distance of the boat from A, in kilometres.

2. The diagram represents a rectangular box in

which the lengths of the edges OA, OB and OC
are respectively 1, 2 and 3 units. Find the
length of OD.

3. The internal measurements of a rectangular box are 3 cm 4 cm 12 cm.

What is the length, in cm, of the longest rod which will fit in the box?

4. A square box of side 5 cm is leaning against a

vertical wall as shown with R 4 cm from the
wall. Find the height of P, in cm, above the
floor.

5. A 25 m pole is propped against a vertical wall with its foot 20 m from the wall.
If its foot slips a further 4 m from the wall, find the distance, in m, that the top
of the pole will slip down the wall.
6. The given right-angled triangle has one side
twice the length of the other. Find the area of
the triangle, in square units.

7. A right-angled triangle has a hypotenuse of length p cm and one other side of

length q cm. If p and q differ by 1, find the length of the remaining side in cm.

8. PQ is the diameter of a circle with centre O. R

is a point on the circumference so that
PQ = OQ = QR = 1. Find the length of PR.

9. RSTU is a rectangle. RS is 8 m, RU is 6 m. RP
and TQ are each perpendicular to SU. Find the
length of PQ, in metres.

10. A cube of side length 1 m rests on a horizontal floor. An ant walking along the
floor bumps into the cube and begins to climb around its face always walking in
straight lines at a constant angle above the horizontal. If it arrives at the top
face of the cube at the point vertically above its starting point after just one
circuit, find the length, in metres, of its path on the cube.
Solutions: Pythagoras Theorem 2
1. x = 26
2. OD= 14
3. AD = 13
4. Height of P above floor = 7 cm
5. Distance slipped = 8 m
6. Area = 20
7. x = p + q

8. PR = 3
9. PQ = 2.8

10. Length of path = 17 m
