Physics Project

Abstract:
Have performed the experiment about series and parallel circuit. The objective of this
experiment, we expected to experienced in the alternation of series and parallel circuit,
skilled in placing and using the basic meter, understand the principle of Ohm's
law. In this experiment, we are building series and parallel circuit in the model house. By
doing this experiment, it helps to clarify the terms of series and parallel circuits. Also, it
makes us understand more about Ohm's law.

Background information
This project will be about an electrical circuit in a model house. The ground floor of
the model house will be connected in series circuit ,whereas, the first floor will be connected
in parallel. The model will also explain as to why wiring in the house should be in parallel.

Objective
This experiment is to see which method should use for the house wiring between series and
parallel circuit.

Materials

At least 12 copper wires

6 light bulbs
6 bulb holders
2 switches
4 battery holders
4 batteries

Method

1.) Plan and mark the place for battery holders, bulb holders, copper wires and
switch on the house
2.) Fixed each of the materials in place
3.) Put in the bulbs and batteries
4.) After turn off the switch, try to put one of the bulbs from each floor and turn on
the switches
5.) Record the result

Discussion

In series circuit, the electric will flow through the wire in one way. When any one bulb is
removed the electric cannot flow through and the circuit becomes opened which cause the
other bulbs to go out as well. While in parallel circuit, the other bulbs will not go out when
one of them is removed because the electricity can still run through each of the wire which is
connected to each bulb. So the electric will flow equally in each wire and this is why other
bulbs will not go out when one is removed.
Calculation
You can find total resistance in a Parallel circuit with the following formula:
1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 +...
Rt = R (t)otal

equivalent resistance of resistors in series : R = R1 + R2 + R3 + ...

Recommendation

You should be careful and aware of the electric involved even if it is small amount of
electricity used in this case. This is for the safety reasons and the maintenance of the
materials used.

Conclusion

In the house, there are many electrical devices that are running independent of each others.
So, it should not disrupt other if one device is turned on or off. When connected in parallel
circuit, each of the light bulbs will independently put on or off the control, and it is not
affecting to each other. Also, it is impossible for the series circuit to control all the bulbs
where some turn on and some turn off at the same time. Therefore, parallel circuit is more
suitable for the house because other light bulbs will still be available; although one of them is
removed or broken.
