PROCEEDINGS OF A W ORKIN G GROUP MEETING
ORG A N IZED BY THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC EN ERG Y AGENCY
AND HELD D U RIN G THE 8th ARGENTINIAN GEOLO G ICA L CONGRESS
IN SAN LUIS, ARGENTINA, FROM 21 TO 23 SEPTEMBER 1981
The large size and geological diversity of the South American continent
provide an obvious potential for uranium deposits of various types, yet the lack
of published information has handicapped effective evaluation of the uranium
potential of the continent. To help supply this need, the International Atomic
Energy Agency convened an Advisory Group Meeting in Lima in December
1978, the Proceedings of which were published by the IAEA in 1981 as
U r a n i u m D e p o s i t s in L a t i n A m e r i c a : G e o l o g y a n d E x p l o r a t i o n . In the mean
time, increased activity in uranium exploration and development led to the
availability of new information. Hoping to encourage the widest possible
exchange of new knowledge and information, the IA EA accepted the invitation
to participate in the 8th Argentinian Geological Congress at San Luis,
Argentina, in 1981 and to hold a Working Group Meeting from 21 to
23 September on the Geology and Metallogenesis of Uranium Deposits of
South America.
Fifty-nine participants from ten countries took part in the Working
Group Meeting. Nine papers were presented on regional or national uranium
resources; one paper reviewed the possibility of the existence of carbonatite
bodies around the southern and western borders of the South American
proterozoic shield, and an introductory paper reviewed the geological
favourability for uranium in South America.
The IA EA would like to thank the officials of the 8th Argentinian
Geological Congress for providing facilities for the Working Group Meeting.
The Agency would also like to thank those who contributed papers and
participated in the discussions.

contributed to this favour ability : the large Precambrian shields covering about 5 500 000 km2
and the crystalline Hercynian nesocratons with about 300 000 km2 as source rocks. Many
sedimentary formations also show excellent lithological characteristics as host rocks for
uranium deposits. Only in Argentina and Brazil has continuous uranium exploration in
South America been carried out, with moderate budgets, during the last twenty-five
years.. In the rest o f South America the search for uranium has been performed intermittently
and with limited resources. However, during recent years interest has increased and more
continuous operation have been recorded in some countries (Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Peru).
It can be estimated that only 20% o f the favourable areas have been explored fairly intensively
in Argentina and Brazil, the tw o most advanced uraniferous countries. Elsewhere in South
America, the proportion is much lower. Nevertheless, the uranium possibilities o f South
America are proved by the resources o f 250 000 t U already defined (in Argentina and
Brazil) for the category o f production cost below US $ 130/kg U. The speculative uranium
potential o f the continent was estimated by the International Uranium Resources Evaluation
Project as between 770 000 and 1 500 000 t U. Within the South American geostructural
framework, five main uraniferous geological areas have been defined on the basis o f the geotectonic
evolution o f the continent, the succession o f sedimentary and magmatic processes, and the
participation in them o f the endogenous and exogenous phases o f the uranium geochemical
cycle. In this paper the principal uranium mtallognie models occurring in the above five
main areas are studied together with the uranium potential o f each area. The possibility o f
uranium recovery from these sources in relation to the respective costs o f production is
briefly discussed.

In Argentina the sandstone- and calcrete-type models are especially representative. Within
the former the peneconcordant sub-type has thus far been considered the more important
since it includes most o f the countrys major uranium reserves. There are also models
associated with limolites, calcilimolites and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks.

a procesos hidrotermales o exogenticos.
Precordillera) presenta intercalaciones marinas.

Nicols, as como varias manifestaciones y anomalas (Fig. 13).

paragenticas, minerales indicadores, asociaciones mineralgicas complejas, etc.).
an pueden no estar paragenticamente vinculados (pechblenda/fluorita).

de norte a sur, son: Consata Sehuanca, La Paz Machacamarca Santa Rosa;
Aroma, Toro-toro-Miculpaya y Pulacayo-Tumusla.
intrusivos, stocks subvolcnicos o cuellos volcnicos, formando cumbres
gneas de Soniquera, Pulacayo, Cosuo, Azanaques, Chualla y Condoriquia;
lineamiento Chorolque, con las intrusiones de Ubina, Tasna-Chorolque;
Esmoraca, San Vicente Andamarca.

pirita, esfalerita, calcopirita, wolframita, shelita, casiterita, marcasita, cuarzo y
turmalina.

cuarcitas, metaconglomerados, itabiritas, gneises, tactitas, esquistos y filitas
(Grupo Serid).
epidoto, cuarzo, clorita, etc.
de Riachao (Parelhas, Rio Grande do Norte).

calcosilicatadas, metarcosas y gneises fuertemente plegados.

tectnico, siguiendo alineamientos regionales noroeste/sudeste y nordeste/sudeste.

FIG.L Plate tectonic setting of some uranium deposits in South America. Cases 1, 2 and 3 are relevant for shield areas; case 4 for the Andean
region.
URANIFEROUS OCCURRENCES IN COLOMBIA 179
uranium (Fig. 1). The Andean Cordillera extends for more than 1200 km in the
western part of the country while in the east the Guyana Shield occupies
approximately 140 000 km2, or 12% of the national territory.
Colombias climatic conditions are very varied but they range essentially from
humid piedmont and savannah in the Andean region to tropical rain forest in the
Guyana Shield area.
The logistic situation is typical of an Andean country with road density and
service availability becoming progressively scarcer from west to east. This, of
course, adds tremendously to the exploration costs of the Amazonie part of the
country which only very recently (1978) has begun to be seriously prospected
for uranium (mainly by EN U S A and COGEMA, two foreign companies operating
in Colombia). Colombia possesses more than 500 airports and landing strips
and about 60 000 km o f motorable roads, most o f them unpaved. This makes
Colombia, like many other developing countries, particularly suited to carborne
radiometric techniques. In fact, practically all the most significant uranium
mineralizations in Colombia have been found by this method (Quetame in 1972,
Zapatoca in 1973 and Berlin in 1977). As only a limited part of the country has
been covered by carborne reconnaissance, more uranium mineralizations are
expected to be detected by this method.
Airborne methods have played an important role in Colombia with several
tens of thousand km2 flown, both by the United Nations and some foreign
companies. This method has not yet, however, pinpointed any major mineraliza
tion and, from the Colombian experience, airborne radiometry seems better suited
to the shield than the Andean regions.
Surprisingly, very little data have so far been published on uranium occurrences
in Colombia'. Numerous unpublished reports and radiometric surveys are, however,
stored in the library of the Instituto de Asuntos Nucleares (IA N ), the Institute o f
Nuclear Affairs, in Bogot. The present summary of the known uraniferous
mineralizations in Colombia draws its information essentially from published
material, the most relevant o f which is listed in the Bibliography.
T Y P E O F U R A N IU M M IN E R A L IZ A T IO N
proposed for the whole of the continent are at least partially represented in
Colombia, which is exceptional for a single country. The distribution of the four
different metallogenetic units are schematically represented in Fig. 2. Figure 3
shows the tentative chronology of the Colombian uranium occurrences, and
Table I makes a tentative correlation of Colombian uranium mineralizations.
The uranium favourability for each o f these domains in Colombia is briefly
reviewed below (and see Table II).
This unit outcrops ores over about 140 000 km2, although not all of this
surface represents actual lithological exposures. In reality, only a very small
percentage o f this region is made of mappable outcrops, and the geology of the
area is still only imperfectly known. No direct uranium exploration has even
been undertaken directly by the Colombian government but some large areas
within this unit are under exploration by means of association contracts with
foreign companies.
From the mtallognie point o f view, the uranium deposits most likely to
occur in this essentially Precambrian and stable unit are: (1) unconformity-
related uranium deposits; (2) pyrite-gold conglomerates; (3) uranium mineraliza
tions related to granites, alkaline syenites or carbonatites; (4) uranium mineraliza
tions o f the potassic metasomatic type such as Espinharas and Itataia in Brazil.
The first three types o f deposits have been recognized in practically every
Precambrian shield, particularly those of North America and Africa. The potassic
metasomatic is a relatively new type o f uranium deposit and has been recognized
only in the Precambrian shield o f Brazil.
This unit covers approximately 460 000 km2 o f Colombia and, like the
Chaco and Pampa Basins Unit (which does not occur in Colombia), it represents
hinterland basins of gentle subsidence filled by Meso-Cenozoic sediments originating
from the Andes Orogeny to the west (Putzers image of sedimentary glaciers
slowly flowing eastward away from the Andes is particularly suggestive).
Although some uranium mineralizations (R io Abujao, Peru; Salta Province,
Argentina) have been recognized in the Tertiary sandstones of this unit, the overall
uraniferous potential is truly negligible and no significant uranium occurrence is
to be expected in this environment, at least in Colombia.
This unit covers about 520 000 km2 of Colombian territory or about 46%
of its surface. Colombia alone accounts for one fifth of the total extension of the
182 PREMOLI and LOZANO
Andean Orogeny in the South American continent. Practically all the significant
uranium occurrences of Colombia are found in this domain (Fig. 2) and the
potential for further discoveries remains considerable. As in other areas in the
Andean Cordillera, uranium can occur both in veins or in sedimentary environments.
In this unit, uranium concentrations formed in conditions of relative crustal
stability are also to be expected (cases 1 -3 in Fig. 1) on the western margin of
the Guyana Shield and then deformed and tectonized by the development of the
Andean Orogeny (case 4 in Fig. 1).
Among the three Cordilleras (Oriental, Central and Occidental), which form
the Andean System in Colombia, the favourability for uranium deposits appears to
decrease from east to west as the lithologies pass from continental to frankly
marine. In fact, most of the uranium occurrences known in the Colombian Andes
are found in the Oriental Cordillera, where in some cases they can form extensive
mineralized districts (Zapatoca-Contratacin, Quetame-Cao Negro), very elongated
and parallel to the Andean trend.
The potential of the Central Cordillera appears to be more modest, although
significant uranium prospects do occur (Berlin) and may not be unique. It would
also seem that the mineralizing effects of both the Cretaceous Medellin Batholith
and the Triassic-Jurassic Ibague Batholith are insufficiently studied in regard to
uranium.
The uranium potential of the Occidental Cordillera is rather limited as this
range consists essentially of metavolcanic and metasedimentary lithologies alternating
with tholeitic basalts: a typical island arc environment, which is known to be
unfavourable to significant uranium concentrations. However, the several Upper
Tertiary intrusions o f this Cordillera are known to carry important Cu-Mo
mineralizations in which uranium can be associated as a minor constituent.
This unit covers no more than 20 000 km2 o f Colombia and is practically
limited to Cerro Acarua. Its mtallognie potential for uranium is almost
unknown as no significant uranium mineralizations have yet been discovered in
any o f the Central American republics.
This unit consists of highly metamorphosed oceanic material and, like the
Oriental Cordillera, its metallic potential is more for siderophile-type elements
(particularly Pt, Au, Cu, Mo, N i) than for an essentially lithophile element such
as uranium. The possibility o f uranium as a by-product o f porphyry-copper mining
(as in Chuquicamata, Chile) should not be excluded, but it remains a remote
possibility.

FIG.5. Typical appearance of Berlin black shale. Sample from a diamond drill core, at
approximately 100 m depth. Note the very dark tone and the abundant calcareous fossil
remains (identified as Neocomian).
The uranium content of the coals of Colombia (reputed to have the largest
resources in Latin America) is uncommonly low, its concentration in the ashes of
most of them not exceeding 20 ppm [5]. The average uranium content of the
ashes o f the coal to be mined in the gigantic Serrejn project (15 X 106 tonnes of
coal per year in 1990; 50 X 106 tonnes o f coal per year in 2000) is a surprisingly
low 5.4 ppm U.
The reported low uranium content o f the Colombian coals is somewhat
anomalous as the age span of the North-Andean coal basins is Maastrichtian-
Miocene at a time when practically all the Andean Cordillera was emplaced and
plenty of acid lithologies were undergoing very active erosion and presumably
releasing important quantities of uranium. The IA N is planning to undertake in
1982 a systematic analysis of the uranium content in the ashes of the various
Colombian coals as a regional guide to potential uranium source rocks.
Extensive U-Cu occurrences have been known for several years in the area
of Quetame in the Departments o f Cundinamarca and Meta. The total mineralized
length is considerable since uranium occurrences are known to outcrop over a
length of 150 km between Quetame and Cao Negro, striking NNE. The mineraliza
tion occurs in a sequence of clays, sandstones and conglomerates, probably shallow
marine or deltaic, of the Farallones Group and Quetame Group. There are
frequent limestone episodes, and the thickness of the whole series does not exceed
400 m. The age is Upper Carboniferous or Permian. The uranium mineralization
is often associated with copper but also with silver and zinc, cobalt and nickel.
Some similarities with the environment of deposition of the Kupferschiefer in
Northern Europe have been noted.
The Quetame area has been intensely drilled by M INATOM E in 19781979,
and the Cao Negro sector is at present under study by ENUSA.
The uranium mineralization is essentially lenticular and appears as a large
swarm of lenses showing great lateral variability. The tropical rain forest conditions
of the region ( > 3000 mm per year) have considerably weathered the surface
expression of the mineralization and unquestionably complicated the exploration.
Not all the extension and geometry o f the mineralization are known.
Occasionally, very high uranium content has been detected in both trenches
or drill cores with values up to 1% U, and both pitchblende and coffinite have
been recognized as very fine disseminations. The control of the mineralization is
essentially sedimentary with little or no remobilization ; the deposit is typically
syngenetic and its control seems to be mainly lithological.

FIG.9. A typical uranium occurrence in the Zapatoca area (Quebrada del Ramo). The
geologists are standing over a heavily mineralized exposure (2000 p p m U). The mineralized
structure has been interpreted as a palaeo channel. Note the thick alternation of sandstones and
shales of the Girn Formation and its great lateral variation. Cross-bedded continental sand
stones are visible in the upper right corner of the photograph.

quite possibly Precambrian (Fig. 11). Various intrusive bodies, with lithologies
ranging from quartz-monzonite to granite, are o f Jurassic-Triassic age, while some
sills of dacitic porphyry indicate an age that is Upper Cretaceous or younger.
N o precise dating o f the California mineralization is available, although ages as
old as Precambrian have been suggested. Mesozoic seems to be more likely.
In most o f the samples collected, uranium shows a strong secular disequilibrium.
The primary Uranium mineralization appears as a very fine dissemination of uranite
or pitchblende in quartz. The individual uranium minerals are often no larger than
10 .
URANIFEROUS OCCURRENCES IN COLOMBIA 2 0 1
Autoradiographs o f the California ore clearly show that uranium never occurs
in the sulphide grains but only in the silicate phases. As gold and silver are
consistently associated with the main sulphide mineralization, two separate
metallurgical flowsheets are anticipated for the combined recovery of the uranium
and precious metal content of the California ore.
Given the extremely erratic uranium values within the mineralized intrusives,
some form o f automatic radiometric ore sorting (successfully employed, for
instance, for the highly erratic igneous mineralization o f Mary Kathleen in Australia)
will probably be suitable for the California ore.
' The potential o f the district remains good but, to this date, in spite o f the
numerous episodic studies of some aspects o f the California mineralization, its
economic significance for uranium has never been systematically evaluated. The
occurrence o f very large uranium reserves in the area seems unlikely, but proper
systematic exploration o f the approximately 50 km2 o f the mineralized district
is highly advisable. The small or medium scale uranium mining o f the hydro-
thermally mineralized district o f California remains a very realistic possibility
open to the Colombian authorities.
4. CONCLUSIONS
(3) The Colombian part of the Andean Orogeny has an excellent potential for
sandstone-type uranium deposits, hydrothermal polymetallic vein deposits,
uranium in phosphatic shales and, possibly, uranium in Tertiary acid
volcanics. All these geological themes are widely represented in Colombia,
and several promising prospects have been identified; some of them are
already undergoing exploratory drilling. The geological typology o f these
mineralizations and the intense folding and fracturing of the Andean Belt
suggest that these occurrences will tend to be multiple and could form
mineralized districts rather than discrete large deposits. Such districts can
constitute an excellent possibility for medium-scale mining on the pattern
of the uranium deposits found in the USA and Portugal.
It can be concluded that there are many geological targets in Colombia that
have still been insufficiently investigated for commercial uranium production. The
potential for a significant ore discovery remains considerable.

DISCUSSION
A.E. BELLUCO: Has any research been conducted into potential uranium
sources and mineralization ages in Colombia?
C. PREMOLI: Yes, a great deal. In the case of Zapatoca, for example, there
is now no doubt that the fertile rock which produced the uranium is the Macizo
of Santander.
A.E. BELLUCO: What is believed to be the uranium-bearing potential of
Tertiary acid volcanic rock on the basis of remobilization and deposition o f their
original Clarke?
C. PREMOLI: This is a very good point the importance of which has not
been fully appreciated in Colombia. In the region around Colombia the only
uraniferous provinces o f this kind that have really been investigated are those
located in Mexico and Peru (El Puno), both o f which are contained in acid
volcanic rock.

which is situated to the north-west o f the sedimentary basin. Within the sandstones, part o f
the quartzose fraction may come from acidic volcanic materials which could also be an additional
uranium source. Syngenetic uranium accumulations are found in phosphate-rich rocks as well
as in certain sandstones, lyddites and cherts. In the Paipa area anomalies in rhyolytic volcanic
tuffs were discovered in which the uranium enrichment is related to the process o f rock alteration.
In the Cao Negro area, near Villavicencio, interesting shows o f uranium, copper, vanadium and
silver were found lodged in deltaic sandstones o f the Farallones group (possibly o f Carboniferous
age). Similar metallogenetic cycles have been detected for uranium-vanadium and for copper;
although these may be practically superposed in space, they may not coincide in time. It is
believed that the actual components o f the Fallarones group could be the source o f the
uranium contributions.

As, la manifestacin Tantamaco 5

THE SOUTH AM E R IC AN SHIELDS.
During the last eight years at least six carbonatites or clusters o f carbonatites have been
discovered in the western parts o f the South American cratons. In contrast to the carbonatites
o f the eastern part o f the South American shields, which have been well studied and placed in a
tectonic context together with the West African carbonatite provinces, those o f the western
part o f the South American cratons have received little attention. This paper is a compilation
o f published and original data on these occurrences, their geology, geochemistry, structural
setting and radioactive mineral potential. An exploration strategy is devised based on experiences
in this rainforest-clad area and the peculiar genetic aspect o f carbonatites. Some details o f a
possibly new uranium mineral encountered in Cerro Cora carbonatite are given.

was intensely cultivated and had a road network sufficient to further extend the
carborne radiometry. The whole intrusive body proved noticeably radioactive,
and several hot spots of more than four times background activity were
identified, covering about 10% of the area of the intrusions, or about 6 km2.
The water collected from the numerous water wells of the area occasionally showed
anomalous uranium values with 80 ppb U being the maximum value against a
general background of 2 to 3 ppb.1

with siderite, goethite, pyrite, phosphates of the gorceixite group, and rutile
(niboferous? ).
Geochemically this carbonatite is characterized by REE content up to
24 000 ppm, and Nb content up to 2000 ppm. The lateritic soil on top of it
has Nb2Os content up to 3.4%, P2Os up to 2.1%, Th02 up to 4.5%, and U up to
25 ppm. Sr and Ba content is low. Part of the laterite capping is manganese ore
with 62% MnO and 15% BaO. The laterite showed significant radioactive anomalies
under the scintillometer SPP-2 of 3000-15 000 cps (background 130200 cps),
while the 7 -spectrometer DISA-400 indicated a U:Th relationship varying
between 1:2 and 1:4. At the front of the hill there is a thermal spring of 41C [7].
The carbonatite has been intruded into Precambrian granites and gneisses
of the Guianense Complex. Its emplacement is probably related to the intersection
of large NNW and NE lineaments (Fig. 4), and its probable age is between
250 and 100 m.y. Because of its remote location and difficult access, its economic
potential seems to be limited for low-price commodities like Fe and Mn [9].
Nb, Mo and Ce are the most important constituents of possible economic
significance.

This oval hill covered with rain forest in a remote area of the Venezuelan
part of the Guyana Shield (Fig. 5) was discovered in 1973 during a geological
mapping project of the Direccin de Geologa of the Ministry of Energy and
Mines of Venezuela using SLAR imagery. Subsequent exploration, including
drilling, was carried out to assess the economic potential of the area. Short
accounts of the geology, geochemistry and economic aspects of the area are
given in Refs [10-12].

the structural pattern of the area. No bedrock has been found on the outcrops

except for a baryte-monazite rock with up to 1.2% Ce. The geochemical and
mineralogical characteristics of the lateritic overburden, which attains depths of
200 m [19], suggest the presence of carbonatite at depth. The laterites show
two types of associations, one with up to 0.2% Nb, up to 0.4% Th and, moreover,
Ti and Zn, and another with P, Ba and up to 1.0% Ce. The presence of rutile,
anatase, brookite, barite, monazite and gorceixite-goyazite explains part of the
geochemical anomalies [11]. Cerro Impacto coincides with a strong aero-
radiometric anomaly, with U>Th [13].
The Cerro Impacto intrusion has been emplaced in the Precambrian Cuchivero
province, consisting mainly of acid volcanic and granitic rocks. Its emplacement is
probably related to large north-eastern faults.
Owing to the remote location and difficult access, large reserves of commodities
such as Nb, Th and REE considered of economic interest are to be encountered.

Ahlfeld [22] and, more recently, Avila Salina [23], described the interesting
nepheline syenite intrusion of Cerro Sapo in the Provincia de Ayopaya, Department
of Cochabamba. The presence of both ankerite and pyrochlore is strongly
suggestive of a carbonatite, although it has not yet been described as such. The co
ordinates of this intrusion are 1650'S and 6650'W. It forms two elongated
irregular bodies with strong positive relief and is aligned approximately along
a 35 strike. The Cerro Sapo syenitic (and possibly carbonatitic) bodies were
first discovered by Ahlfeld in 1935 and they are known to be weakly but
consistently radioactive. They are important tectonically because they are the
only probable carbonatites positively identified in the Andean Belt.
The first step in the search for small carbonatite intrusions in huge rain
forest-covered shield areas requires the use of small-scale imagery. Most
carbonatites in the western part of the South American craton have been discovered
by remote sensing techniques because they are readily recognizable targets.
LANDSAT imagery has the advantages of being readily available at low cost,
giving a synoptic view, and affording easy detection of large lineaments and circular
262 PREMOLI and KROONENBERG
structures. Moreover, spectral anomalies (in colour or grey tone) can be detected
and digitally enhanced (Fig. 6).
SLAR also offers the advantage of small scale and synoptic view. The low
illumination angle makes morphological anomalies such as circular hills and long
lineaments even more prominent than in LANDSAT images. Cloud penetration
by radar waves allows images to be obtained from eternally cloud-covered areas,
although the spectral information is difficult to interpret. Moreover, if no previous
radar coverage exists, the acquisition of SLAR imagery is very costly and is
usually only worth while for very large areas (> 100 000 km2).
Owing to the huge areas involved in carbonatite exploration, and the
continental dimensions of lineaments controlling carbonatitic intrusions, the
application of remote sensing techniques can be particularly successful in inter
regional co-operative projects.

6. CONCLUSIONS
( 1) Most of the carbonatites discovered in the western part of the South American
cratons have been discovered by remote sensing techniques. A deliberate
search for these structures will most likely result in additional discoveries.
(2) Remote sensing, particularly LANDSAT, is expected to play a major role
in the regional search for carbonatites, for two reasons:
(a) Owing to their excellent morphological expression, carbonatite bodies
are easily identified even in heavily forested regions; and
(b) Since carbonatites tend to occur along major crustal lineaments, analysis
of remote sensing imagery may indicate favourability areas [2 1 ].
It is significant that all the other carbonatites mentioned in this paper,
with the possible exception of Cerro Cora/Cerro Sarambi, are aligned
along obvious structural trends.
(3) The mineralogy and geochemistry of carbonatites is very diagnostic. A purely
geochemical approach is applicable from an early stage of exploration; geo
chemistry of heavy minerals seems particularly suited to the identification
of carbonatite bodies and can also offer direct clues to their uraniferous
potential. The technique is well suited to the tropical rain forest conditions
of the South American shields.
(4) Even in logistically unfavourable regions, the economic interest of carbonatites
and related intrusions can be considerable, particularly for high-value
commodities such as niobium, rare earths and radioactive minerals, which
require only minimal costs and reduced infrastructures.
(5) The well-known regional association between carbonatites and kimberlites
should not be overlooked.
(6 ) The ease of prospection of small and localized targets such as carbonatites
and their excellent response to geophysics (particularly radiometry) makes
the exploration of these bodies comparatively economic and fast.
