Introduction:

Our project is being used to determine if people believing in aliens has

any positive correlation to people believing in ghosts. We predicted that if a

person has a strong belief in aliens, then they will also have a strong belief in

ghosts. We predicted that it will be a strong positive correlation, and the

correlation will be anywhere from 0.701 to 0.999. We used a sample survey

to gather our data, which means that we asked twenty-five samples of the

population how much they believed in both aliens and ghosts on a scale of

one to one hundred.

Data Set:

The term population is the entire group of individuals being studied.

Our population is all of the human beings on the planet: Earth. The term

sample is a part of the population from which we are actually collecting

data. Our sample is the twenty-five people that we surveyed. The term

variable is any characteristic of an individual. Our explanatory variable is

the belief in aliens, and our response variable is the belief in ghosts. Because

if people are open-minded enough to believe in aliens, then we believed that

they would also be open-minded enough to believe in ghosts.

Interpret r & r2:

The term correlation describes the direction and strength of a

straight-line relationship between two quantitative variables. Correlation is

Alanskas, Via, Zernell 5

usually written as r. Our correlation value is 0.184. The direction of our

correlation is positive, which means the linear line goes up. The strength of

our correlation is weak, which means that there is not valid correlation. The

term coefficient of determination is the fraction or percentage of the

variation in the values of y is explained by the least squares regression of y

on x. Our coefficient of determination is 0.034. The explained variation is

3.4%.

Prediction:

The term least squares regression line is the line that makes the sum

of the squares of the vertical distances of the data points from the line as

small as possible. Our equation is y = 0.174x + 58.938. If a persons belief in

aliens is fifty, then that persons belief in ghosts should be fifty also.

y = 0.174(50) + 58.938

y = 8.700 + 58.938

y = 67.638

Lurking Variables:

The term lurking variables is a variable that has an important effect.

Two lurking variables are the age of our samples, and the religions of our
Alanskas, Via, Zernell 6

samples. Both lurking variables causations are common response, because

both the explanatory and response variables are responding to our lurking

variables.

Conclusion:

We predicted that if a person has a strong belief in aliens, then they

will also have a strong belief in ghosts. We predicted that it will be a strong

positive correlation, and the correlation will be anywhere from 0.701 to

0.999. Our hypothesis was incorrect. Our correlation value was 0.184, and

we had predicted that it would be anywhere from 0.701 to 0.999. Our data

had a weak positive correlation, whereas we had predicted that our data

would have a strong positive correlation.
