T-Shirt Book Report Project

Students will get to have some fun for their final book report of the year! Recently in
reading, we have been focusing on summarizing the story and using sequence of events
to do so. Students have been working on sorting out the important parts of the story
from the small details that dont play a role in the main point of the story. Then, they use
these important parts to retell the story, in order, using sequence of events words (first,
next, then, last, etc.).

For the fourth quarter book report, each student will get a chance to demonstrate their
ability to do this. When we retell a story, we usually do so orally, so there will not be
much writing for this book report. Instead, much of the students grade will be based on
a presentation in class. However, to help with their presentation, students will be
creating a T-shirt that is based off of the book he/she read. Below are the guidelines for
the T-shirt & presentation.

1. You will choose a chapter book that you have not read before. You must bring the
book to school to get it approved by Friday, May 6th.

2. After reading the book, get a plain white t-shirt and turn it into your book report.
(You can get white t-shirts pretty cheap at Michaels or Joanns. Let me know if you
need help getting a t-shirt!) Your options can include the following, but are
certainly not limited to: writing on it, painting, drawing, ironing something on,
gluing something on, using other fabric, feathers, buttons, crafts supplies, etc. Use
the front and back of your shirt and be creative!

3. Items that MUST be included on the shirt are:

a. Title and Author
b. Picture(s)/scene of some sort that represents the book as a whole (this
should be the main part)
c. At least 2 of the following items
i. Main characters (words or pictures)
ii. A book rating/review (example: a star-rating, a sentence or phrase to
promote the book, etc.)
iii. Important quote from a character or the book in general
iv. Your favorite part(s)
v. Any other ideas you have (approved by Mrs. Neumeyer)

4. Remember, the t-shirt will be your aid for your presentation in class so you will
want to include the most important parts of the story and leave out the little
details that dont matter as much.

5. The book reports are due on Monday, June 6th. No late book reports
are accepted. You will be presenting this day so you will get to wear your t-shirts to
school! See rubric for details about presenting.

6. Parents, hopefully you can see that these guidelines are a little more open ended
that the other reports. This is so your child can think out of the box and be
creative. I want your child to do the work with your help. Please help to ensure
that they are the primary designer of the T-shirt book report. If they have an idea
that is not included above, please have them ask me about it! I would love to see
what other creative ideas they come up with. Please also help them to practice for
their presentation so they are well rehearsed in what they are going to say.

Here are some examples of what other people have done. This is just to get you thinking
so please dont copy their ideas. Think outside the box. Im excited to see your
creativity!
