what we are saying, is be realistic. If your dream job requires you to do
more study, then embrace it and go for gold.
Be prepared
When that perfect job post does finally arise, don't find yourself
unprepared. Be ahead of the pack; show your enthusiasm and motivation
by having your CV and/or other documentation (depending on what
industry you want to be in) ready to go and grab that opportunity.
They don't come around that often. Don't be afraid to get a little creative
with your approach. Employers see CV after CV. Why should they hire
you? What makes you different? You can successfully add your own
spin on things without compromising on professionalism. Remember
that nothing should be last minute; it always shows if it is.

In some industries it pays to get yourself out there. What do we mean
by that you ask? Networking has evolved rapidly over the years, from
liquid lunches with clients in the past, to rubbing shoulders after work.
We're now seeing the emergence of a new wave, more and more business
contacts are being made via virtual networks. In some industries, i.e.
design, fashion, software, web development etc, it pays to be part of
the virtual networking world as it gives you visibility. Start participating
in conversations of interest and following those with similar backgrounds
to yourself. If you want to break into the fashion industry, start a blog.
Recruiters will often google you, and if you don't come up, you're
actually invisible.
EMPLOYER-FRIENDLY TWITTER PAGES
Get the most out of your Twitter page. Use it as a platform to the world.
Put your job pitch in your Twitter bio (160 characters). There is a lot you
can do to promote yourself. Use the background to its fullest. And tweet,
tweet, tweet about your job search. Include a link to your perfectly
polished and up-to-date CV or personal site. Establish yourself as an
expert in your field, but never, never mis-represent yourself. It will only
come back to haunt you later.
Shockingly, approx. half of recruiters use social networking sites
to screen potential candidates. Yep, who would have thought? And of
those surveyed, approx. one-third found things that stopped them from
hiring someone. The most common reasons: inappropriate photos,
followed by inappropriate content and, references to drinking or drug
related activity. It’s also OK to say you're eating lunch with friends
because it’s who you are, but if you like to post endless party pictures
you could be making a mistake. On the flip side, a clever tweet could
also win you points.
OPTION 2: HEADHUNTERS
It's not always about who you're looking for; some people on Twitter are
actually looking for YOU!
There are many job recruiters (headhunters) who now use Twitter to
look for potential candidates. But before contacting a recruiter via Twitter,
check out their credibility.
Tweetdeck.com and TwitJobSearch.com are two such recruiters.
They have teamed up to create jobdeck, making it even easier to
search for jobs. They work not only with Twitter, but Facebook and
LinkedIn as well. Essentially what they do is scour through Twitter,
indexing tweets that are jobs, and ditching the rest. So they can sift
through the hype and, provide jobseekers with meaningful and relevant
job opportunities. It also has the added benefit of being able to be
viewed and used on your iPhone at any time.
Tweetmyjobs.com is new to the group. It aims to bring recruiters,
hiring managers and job seekers together on Twitter. You can use your
Twitter account to subscribe to TweetmyJobs. It channels by the city
and job type you want to follow, then you begin receiving job notifications
on your mobile phone. If you don't have a mobile phone, you can still
view the listings online. The ability to receive notifications of new jobs
immediately via your mobile phone (any mobile phone, not just an
iPhone) is a huge plus. It sets this site apart from others.
TWITTER ADVANTAGES
Twitter has the advantage of real-time communication (potentially)
and the opportunity for a potential hiring manager to view not only your
work if available, but also your persona and how you interact with others.
It gives you the advantage of being able to connect with Managers and
other influential people that you would normally not be able to access.
You can also build a rapport and establish some credibility with them
before approaching the subject of possible employment.
Another advantage to looking for jobs on Twitter is that it shows potential
employers that your finger is already on the pulse, that you are evolving
with technology and social media and you know how it can work for you
in the real world.

I personally have been running on and off for the past 6 months and I can
honestly admit to knowing next to nothing about the overall effects of
running. It is only now that I am noticing any difference in my legs. It may be

THE next step
So now that I have been running
for a while, know it's good for me
and am starting to see the results,
I am hooked. But I want to push
myself more, get more results,
more benefits. I've got one word
was something I learned from my
personal trainer way back when.
His interval training methods were
mostly gruelling and torturous,
but for that whole hour, I never
once thought about work, stress
or even my own name for that
matter! It felt good to let go of the
outside world. I never thought of
applying this methodology to running
before. Interval training is said
to shed more kilos than classic
running. Try alternating continuously
between going hard then easing up.
Make the intervals longer as you
gain strength. If your stamina is
not quite up to it, try intervals with
the walk/run methodology instead.
For those who struggle with
motivation, try joining a running
group to kick start your new-found
health habit.
