1. Determination of Mass flow that could be cooled by the system.

As all the data is already given for Ammonia, The Q is calculated given:
=
This resulted in a value of 527293,9867 W. All units where converted in order to make sense.
For calculating the outlet temperature this Q was equalized with the Q of the water current and as the Cp for
the water, not having the outlet temperature is not known, it was expressed in terms of and average
temperature with the use of a table for saturated water with the values of Cp at different temperatures
calculated by interpolation.

Having all expressed and with the given value of mass flow rates, the value of the outlet temperature of the
water current was finally iterated using solver, obtaining 30,62184835C = 30,622 C as the result.

Given the fact that the heat exchanger coefficient is already given, and the value of all the temperatures, and
the Q of the system, which is equal to the Q calculated for both currents, is already set, the Area is solved for
the following equation:
= (Ln)

Resulting in =
(Ln)
But to obtain the change in temperature of the heat exchanger using the natural logarithm formula, the
system was arranged as follows;

1 2

21
Replacing all data in the following formula: () = 2
( )
1

Resulting in a value of 127,3957986C, that replacing in the formula of the solved Area, it is obtained an area
for the heat exchanger of 8,622962071m2 = 8,623 m2.

Given the area calculated in the previous item, Q is expressed given = (Ln)
Where the outlet temperature of Water is missing as it changes for this system,
21
And where (Ln) is calculated as () = 2
( )
1
It is also known that this Q must be equal to the Q for each flow, and those are also expressed given:
=
The mass flow rate of Air that is cooled, is also a variable missing.
For obtaining the temperature and mass lfow rate, the Q of both flows are equalized, but also is equalized a
Q of one of those flows with the Q that contains the heat exchanger coeff. U, the temperature and the mass
flow rate are therefore calculated by iteration of them both as the fulfilment of the previous equalized
requirements is done, for that solver is used.

It is also important to take into account that as the first item, the Cp for water not given as temperature is not
given, so it is expressed as interpolation of table data, and that the U remained unchanged as the problem set
states.

The results obtained are:

For the water current, an outlet temperature of 22,70977381 C = 22,7098 C.
And a Cooled Mass flow rate of Air of 231,2303149 m2 = 231,230 m2
