Abstract: The History of English vocabulary. The Three Circles of English
speakers x The Circles of Proficiency; Native proficiency x User proficiency
(genetic native nature); English-speaking x English knowing. Varieties of
English: Britishisation x Americanization; local forms in former colonies;
hybrid forms (indigenization of English and Anglicization of local
languages). Global English, English as a Lingua Franca, English as an
international language, Globish. Word formation in English: polysemy,
borrowing, affixation, word class shift, polysemy; homonymy. Internet
English, Collocations, fixed expressions, idioms and slangs; register
(formal and informal).
Aims:
- Identify word formation processes in English as it establishes
itself as a global language of communication and apply this
knowledge to teaching and translation.
- Consider how varieties of English and new hybrid forms affect
teaching and translation of English as an international language.
