Subject 2.1: Design a wireless communication system (1-2 students)

Supervizor: S.L. Alexandru Martian, PhD

Description:

You will consider the following requirements:

Bit rate: x mbps;

Occupied bandwidth (90%): x MHz;
Pulse-shape filter: Root-Raised Cosine;
Carrier frequency: x MHz.

The modulation technique and the roll-off factor of the RRC filters should be chosen in order to
comply with the requirements. Discuss about the error rate performance of the system in case of
channels affected by AWGN, for various SNR values.

The project should be implemented using the GNU Radio Companion environment (graphical
environment similar to Simulink) and the USRP SDR platforms.

Each student will receive a different set of requirements.

certain BER (Bit Error Rate).

You are responsible for the digital baseband part, considering the RF block parameters given in
the following table (one of the cases).

You are required to decide:

The digital decoding diagram (architecture, block diagram)

Choose the parameters for the block from the diagram (filters: cutoff frequency, ordeer, sampling
frequency, oversampling factor etc .)

Choose the number of bits in the A/D converter

Choose a proper attenuation value for an optimal "attack" of the A/D convertor.
Subject 3: Analysis of OFDM modulation technique in MATLAB/SIMULINK (2
students)

Supervisor: Prof. Ion Marghescu PhD.

Description:

The research team will:

1. Study the theoretical basics for OFDM signals;

2. Identify tools created by Mathworks team or by third parties to study OFDM
communications systems (modulation, transmission through a channel, demodulation)
3. Understand the tools and run them in the original form;
4. Change the tools in order to observe and evaluate the performance of the communication
system from the point of view of the BER versus SNR for different parameters of the
OFDM signal and of the channel;
5. Every student will choose specific cases to analyze. Every student should deliver graphs
comparing the performance of the system in the cases of at least two different OFDM
signals.

The parameters of the signals studied by every student will be established with the supervising
professor in the second phase of the project.
Subject 4: Evaluation of real life IDS (Intrusion Detection System) implementations (2 students)

Supervizor: S.l. Radu Lupu, PhD

Description :

1. Provide a comparation-based evaluation of the real-life IDS implementations as

specified by one (to be chosen) of the following requests:
a. functional evaluation and analysis of Snort and Surricata;
b. functional evaluation and analysis of Bro and Surricata
c. performance evaluation of anomaly-based detection mechanisms of
Surricata and Snort;
d. performance evaluation of signature-based detection mechanisms of
Surricata and Bro;
e. by mechanisms and technologies proposed to level up Snort, Bro and
Surricata toward high-bandwidth networks;

For each one of the previous requests it shall be accomplished:

a functional block diagram of the related IDS implementations;

the features identification and funct/perf criteria definition;
(expected outcome) experimental platform specification + evaluation
demo, graphics + tables of either supported features or easured/statistical
values;
Subject 5.1: Evaluation of a real WiFi network (1-2 students)

Supervisor: S.l. Alexandru Rusu , PhD

Analyze a WiFi Network from the next points of view:

1. The coverage area, the adequate use of RF channels and the mobility by experimental
measurements and by simulation using ICS Telecom or any other simulation media you
prefer;
2. The mobility by observations and simulations in OPNET The quality of service (QoS)
mobility by experimental observations and simulations in OPNET or any other
simulation media you prefer;
3. The security vulnerabilities;
4. The physical level for a peculiar case by simulating in Simulink an OFDM
communication system;

All the students should theoretically explore the basics of the technology and every member of
the team will extend the study for his topic.

From the experimental point of view you should:

Identify the location (building, floor, room) and parameters (SSID, security,
channel no. etc) of the important/visible Access points (AP);
Measure and make a map of the coverage of the APs;
For selected APs: evaluate the network performance (throughput), evaluate the
security vulnerabilities, monitor the traffic and obtainf the password using Sniffer
applications (like Commview, Wireshark);
Try to perform hand-over between compatible APs, checking if the connection is
working during and after the hand-over
Propose actions to improve the coverage and cooperation between networks.
Present all your findings and conclusions in a written report.
Subject 5.2: Simulation of Space Based Augmentation System Navigation Messages (1-2

3. Deocde real life EGNOS messages from Sis Net.

4. Write a report with the theoretical aspects and experimental findings.

Subject 6: Assessment of video compression methods (2 students)

Supervisor: S.l. Cristina Oprea, PhD

Description:

You are required to:

- Gather a set of 5 test video sequences in YUV format from

https://media.xiph.org/video/derf/ (mandatory: crowd_run, pedestrian_area). Make a brief
description of each video regarding global motion, depth of field, static/mobile camera,
texture, etc.
- Using VideoWriter objects in Matlab, compress the test videos in all supported formats. A
Matlab program will be written for this, exploring the compression properties for each
compression method and the objects functions available.
- For all resulting compressed files evaluate the compression ratio and the video quality.
Compare the results obtained using each compression method and explain the
observations from the theoretical point of view, discussing the advantages and drawbacks
for each compression format.
- Present the entire work, including the final conclusions, in a written report.
