Summary of evidence from constructed response on Science/Social

Studies passages & CFAs

In hopes of getting a greater positive outcome with constructed responses, I also

incorporated passages in Social Studies to include constructed responses.

In the beginning of the year, very few students were able to effectively give a complete,
accurate response to questions. To correct this problem, the majority of responses were
teacher led. I would model the correct way to answer a constructed response question.
Students would then copy my response onto their paper. I modeled my thinking as I was
writing and proofreading my answers. As they year progressed, we moved into the I do,
we do approach. I still modeled my thinking on one response and then students would
help me with a response. We had to do this for quite a while as students were not able to
effectively help me with my response. I did eventually move on to allowing students to
work with a partner to complete the responses. Once the students answered a question, I
would show the response (without allowing others to know who the paper belonged to)
on the smartboard and students would critique the response. Once students became
comfortable with looking for errors, I began requiring students to answer questions
independently. I had hopes the long process I took to model the proper way to answer
questions would prove successful. However, the majority of students still struggled with
getting their verbal thoughts to a piece of paper. I have seen improvement but we are
still working diligently to make our responses more appropriate. This has given me
direction as to where I should start with my next group of students. I will stay longer on
each step of explicit modeling and think a-louds to ensure success for all of my future
students.

For class comparison of constructed response questions, I chose one claim, evidence,
and reasoning question from each CFA. Criteria for each question per quarter remained
the same.

Summary of data from CFAs

After looking over the data from each CFA, the only conclusion I can draw is that the results
were very inconsistent. There were so many factors to consider when looking at this data.
Assessments I thought would be easy proved to be the lower scoring CFAs. For example,
animal studies I thought would be a simple concept since students came to 5th grade with prior
knowledge of this turned out not to the case. I can only assume students were overly confident
and didnt take the time to carefully complete the assessments. This shoed me I needed to be
more explicit in my instruction and model concepts even when students seemed to understand a
concept.
