INDOOR LIGHTING QUICK ESTIMATING GUIDE
The Area Coverage Tables that follow are desiqned io provide a quick estimate of
fixture quantities required io lighi an area to 100 lnitial Footcandles. The tables list
those fixtures most commonly used and are intended for approximation purposes
and not to replace a precise lighting survey.
Howto Use the Area Coverage Tables: Each table gives square feet per fix-
ture coverage for three room size classificaiions; Large (RCR 1), Medium
(RCR 3), Small (RCR 5). lf the RCR (Room Cavity Ratio) falls between 1 & 3
or 3 & 5, round up to the higher number for approximation purposes. Room
cavity raiios (RCR) greater than 5, usually corridors, narrow aisles and
small rooms with uncommonly high ceilings, require special consideration.
Contact your Lithonia/Hi-Tek agent for an approximate fixture quantity.
Follow these easy steps to deiermine the approximate number of fixlures required:

OUTDOOR LIGHTING DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
The lighting levels shown below are average maintained levels of illumination. They are the mini-
mum average levels felt satisfactory for the indicated aciivity. Higher levels of illumination are
often used for improved safety, aesthetics security or television coverage of sporting events.
ILLUMINATION LEVELS
Occasionally, minimum maintained footcandle levels, maximum to minimum,
average to maximum or average to minimum ratios are specified; such as 1or
sports or security lighting. These requirements make a computer analysis
almost mandatory. Contact your Liihonia/Hi-Tek representative for aitention
your liqhinq needs.

ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The ballast in an H.1.D. luminaire serves four basic iunctions: (1) matches the
line voltage to the required larnp operating voltage; (2) Limiis the allowable
lamp current, since all H LD. lamps have a negative resistance; (3) Provides
the required open c rcuit voltage to start the lamp and, (4) Regulates the
input voltage to provide proper lamp lumen output.
Listed below is a summary ol the various H.l.D. ballast types. The information included here is a
general comparison of ihe various ballasts. Check the detailed electrical data to determine the
operating characteristics of the ballasts used in Hi-Tek luminaires.
