Proclaiming with Pentecostal Power

P
entecost- the culminating feast of Easter - is not merely celebrating the 'birthday of
the Church'' it is also the ongoing proclamation of the power of 'being the Church', of
daring to live the life of Christ into which we are born by baptism through the power
of His Spirit. The first Pentecost evokes the scene that stirs up the dead bones of that first
little community of Jerusalem so that it comes alive, stands up and goes forward to the ends
of the earth with the good news of the Risen Christ.
The faith experience of this event is too great a mystery for Luke to describe, so he gropes
for comparisons. The surging power unleashed is like a wind and fire that fill the house
of those who have gathered to await the Spirit whom Jesus has promised. This spiritual
phenomenon takes this community and every community of believers beyond complacency
and despair, enabling them to discover the passion, death and Resurrection of Jesus and
daring them to live it.
In the small, shaken, but inspired community that had huddled in the Upper Room, the
disciples experience the coming of the Holy Spirt upon them who is the love of the Father
and the Son 'at home' with them, dwelling intimately within the community of believers, the
Church. The Spirit is the enduring reality of Jesus' words and deeds and the One who urges
the disciples to proclaim these to the world. The Spirit is present whenever we manifest
heroic courage in living the gospel.
We therefore have the imagery of tongues of fire that proclaim the Risen One, in whom
diverse people will be forged into a unity, and all false pride in race and culture destroyed.
This is why after the coming of the Spirit, the disciples go out to speak to the pilgrims that
that had thronged from different parts of the world for the festival. No matter what their
language was, all heard them in their own language and praised the Lord in unison. There is
a reversal of Babel for the people of God.
Pentecost signifies that for our contemporary church and society, there is still a great need
to be able to hear what the other is saying and to communicate in a language that can
be understood. Bishops need to listen to what people are saying: the government needs
honesty rather than the language of political subterfuge and the media needs to speak
without hysteria and sensationalism. The Church needs to preach the gospel and celebrate
liturgy in all known languages of the human race.
If there isn't any widespread experience of such an outpouring of the Spirit, it is because we
focus more on extraordinary gifts like speaking in tongues and being gifted with sensational
powers of healing. There are also ordinary gifts of the Spirit that bring inner healings to the
broken soul, empower us to forgive, be faithful and pray sincerely, honestly and powerfully.
The Spirit can bring us back to a living faith - a renewed trust in God. We open ourselves
to Spirit when we reach out to one another and when we appreciate the magnificence of
God's presence in our life.
The outpouring of the Spirit is a continuing event that dares us to become a community
of fire, who will keep the flame of missionary passion for God and for the world burning
strongly, even in the darkest nights. Pentecost calls us to become a strong wind that blows
the good news of the Risen life of Christ to the world, proclaiming with Pentecostal power
about the One who will never fails us.

Receive the Holy Spirit ...
to renew the World
A
s the Father has sent me, so I send you... Receive
the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:21-22). The gi of the Spirit
on the evening of the Resurrec on, took place once
again on the day of Pentecost, intensified this me
by extraordinary outward signs. On the evening of Easter, Jesus
appeared to the Apostles and breathed on them his Spirit (cf. Jn
20:22); on the morning of Pentecost the outpouring occurred
in a resounding way, like a wind which shook the place the
Apostles were in, filling their minds and hearts. They received a
new strength so great that they were able to proclaim Christs
Resurrec on in dierent languages: They were all filled with
the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them u erance (Acts 2:4). Together with them was
Mary, the Mother of Jesus, the first disciple and the Mother
of the nascent Church. With her peace and her smile, she
accompanied the joyful young Bride, the Church of Jesus.
The word of God, especially in todays readings, tells us that
the Spirit is at work in individuals and communi es filled with
the Spirit: He guides us into all the truth (cf. Jn 16:13), He renews
the face of the earth (Ps 103:30), and He gives us his fruits (cf.
Gal 5:22-23).
In the Gospel, Jesus promises His disciples that, when He
has returned to the Father, the Holy Spirit will come to guide
them into all the truth (cf. Jn 16:13). Indeed He calls the Holy
Spirit the Spirit of truth, and explains to His disciples that the
Spirit will bring them to understand ever more clearly what
He, the Messiah, has said and done, especially in regard to His
death and resurrec on. To the Apostles, who could not bear
the scandal of their Masters suerings, the Spirit would give
a new understanding of the truth and beauty of that saving
event. At first they were paralyzed with fear, shut in the Upper
Room to avoid the a ermath of Good Friday. Now they would
no longer be ashamed to be Christs disciples; they would
no longer tremble before the courts of men. Filled with the
Holy Spirit, they would now understand all the truth: that
the death of Jesus was not his defeat, but rather the ul mate
expression of Gods love, a love that, in the Resurrec on,
conquers death and exalts Jesus as the Living One, the Lord,
the Redeemer of mankind, of history and of the world. This
truth, to which the Apostles were witnesses, became Good
News, to be proclaimed to all.
The gi of the Holy Spirit renews the earth. The Psalmist says:
You send forth your Spirit and you renew the face of the
earth (Ps 103:30). The account of the birth of the Church in the
Acts of the Apostles is significantly linked to this Psalm, which is
a great hymn of praise to God the Creator. The Holy Spirit whom
Christ sent from the Father, and the Creator Spirit who gives life
to all things, are one and the same. Respect for crea on, then,

is a requirement of our
faith: the garden in
which we live is not
entrusted to us to be
exploited, but rather
to be cul vated and
tended with respect (cf.
Gen 2:15). Yet this is
possible only if Adam the man formed from the earth allows
himself in turn to be renewed by the Holy Spirit, only if he allows
himself to be re-formed by the Father on the model of Christ,
the new Adam. In this way, renewed by the Spirit of God, we
will indeed be able to experience the freedom of the sons and
daughters, in harmony with all crea on. In every creature we
will be able to see reflected the glory of the Creator, as another
Psalm says: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through
all the earth! (Ps 8:2, 10).
In the Le er to the Gala ans, Saint Paul wants to show the
fruits manifested in the lives of those who walk in the way of
the Spirit (cf. Gal 5:22). On one hand, he presents the flesh,
with its list of a endant vices: the works of selfish people
closed to God. On the other hand, there are those who by
faith allow the Spirit of God to break into their lives. In them,
Gods gi s blossom, summed up in nine joyful virtues which
Paul calls fruits of the Spirit. Hence his appeal, at the start
and the end of the reading, as a programme for life: Walk by
the Spirit (Gal 5:6, 25).
The world needs men and women who are not closed in on
themselves, but filled with the Holy Spirit. Closing oneself o
from the Holy Spirit means not only a lack of freedom; it is a
sin. There are many ways one can close oneself o to the Holy
Spirit: by selfishness for ones own gain; by rigid legalism seen
in the a tude of the doctors of the law whom Jesus referred
to as hypocrites; by neglect of what Jesus taught; by living
the Chris an life not as service to others but in the pursuit of
personal interests; and in so many other ways. The world needs
the courage, hope, faith and perseverance of Christs followers.
The world needs the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace,
pa ence, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-
control (Gal 5:22). The gi of the Holy Spirit has been bestowed
upon the Church and upon each one of us, so that we may live
lives of genuine faith and ac ve charity, that we may sow the
seeds of reconcilia on and peace. Strengthened by the Spirit
and his many gi s, may we be able to uncompromisingly ba le
against sin and corrup on, devo ng ourselves with pa ent
perseverance to the works of jus ce and peace.

Mary in the Year of Mercy
T
he Spirit of God is ac ve and
alive. In order to grasp the
ac on of the Spirit in us, it
is necessary to take a look
at Jesus. The Spirit was present even
before His birth, and ever a er leading
Him to the desert and consecra ng Him
for His mission among the people.
A Life in the Spirit
St Luke has accurately traced how the
Spirit was at work at the annuncia on
(Lk 1:35), at Jesus bap sm (Lk 3:22)
and in His messianic work (Lk 4:11, 14,
18). Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit
and said, I thank thee, Father, Lord
of heaven and earth, that thou hast
hidden these things from the wise and
understanding, and revealed them to
babes; yea, Father, for such was thy
gracious will (Lk 10:21).
Fr Dr Fuellenbach, writes amazingly
about the Kingdom of God and the
Holy Spirit:
In the triune God there reigns a
perfect exchange: The Father gives
himself totally to the Son, and the Son
on his part gives himself totally back to
the Father. This personal reciprocal self-
giving is the Person of the Holy Spirit.
Thus the Holy Spirit is the love that reigns
in God. The Father is totally related to
the Son, and the Son is totally related to
the Father. The Holy Spirit is this right
rela onship of self-giving love in the
triune God. This life-crea ng and life-
sustaining rela onship is, par excellence,
the Kingdom of God (Fuellenbach, The
Kingdom of God, 161).

it possible for different people living

together and without conflict. The
Spirit gifts people the ability to
pardon. The Spirit brings life where
there is death. The Spirit of Jesus
spurs the Christian community to
the experience of reconciliation:
We beseech you on behalf of Christ,
be reconciled to God (2 Cor 5:20).
Above all, the Spirit prompts us to
turn to God as Father in prayer. Paul
puts it in splendid words: For those
who are led by the Spirit of God are
sons of God. For you did not receive
the spirit of slavery to fall back into
fear, but you have received the spirit
of sonship. When we cry, Abba!
Father! it is the Spirit himself bearing
witness with our spirit that we are
children of God (Rom 8:14-16).
First Pentecost to the Year of Mercy
It is befi ng to return to the first
Pentecost. Acts of the Apostles oers a
very splendid narra on of this mighty
event. It was indeed the climax of a
number of profound experiences that
had become part and parcel of the life
of Peter, John and the apostles.
Amazingly, the account of the Acts
casts light on Mary the Mother of
Jesus. All these with one accord
devoted themselves to prayer,
together with the women and Mary
the mother of Jesus, and with his
brothers (Acts 1:14).
The Transforming Power of the
Holy Spirit
A closer look at the first Pentecost
and a careful reading of Acts 2:1-4
give us a renewed awareness of the
transforming power of the Holy Spirit.
Immediately after the Pentecost, a
courageous proclamation of the Good
News of Jesus Christ was followed by
signs, wonders and miracles. And
fear came upon every soul; and many
wonders and signs were done through
the apostles (Acts 2:43).

With Mary to live a New Pentecost
Today, we are living in a favorable me.
Our Blessed Mother will guide and lead
us towards a new Pentecost. Her Yes
to Gods Word (Lk 1:38), challenges
us to say Amen even in the midst of
trials and tribula ons that are beyond
our power to comprehend. Marys
solicitude towards her cousin Elizabeth
(LK 1: 40) is an invita on for us to reach
out to those in need with promptness.
Her tear-filled ques on: Son why have
you done this to us (LK 2:48) cau ons
us to be ever alert, to accompany
vigilantly those entrusted to our care.
Marys ability to treasure her Sons
words in her heart (Lk 2:51), at this
par cular moment of history of the
Church, is simply an invita on for each
of us to praise God for the marvels He
has accomplished in each of us making
us capable of cherishing and treasuring
the Word of God through the constant
prac ce of the Leco divina or other
forms of prayer.
Marys heart went out to the young
couple at Cana and she pleaded:
Son, they have no wine (Jn2:3). Is
our situation different from that of
Marys? How often are we faced with
similar circumstances in our mission
among the poor and needy? Marys
plea encourages us to be intercessors
throughout the day.
Marys courage to stand at the foot of
the cross (Jn 19:25) inspires us never to
lose courage. Finally, her eager wai ng
in prayer together with all the others
(Acts 1:14) reassures us that Mary is in
our midst and with her we can trus ully
hope to Live this Year of Mercy as
a New Pentecost. May Our Blessed
Mother accompany every step we take
to make Jesus known and loved. Great
things happen when God pours out His
Spirit upon us.

Embrace the Holy Spirit
T
he fire that descended upon
the apostles of Jesus Christ,
his mother Mary and various
other women disciples and
his brothers in the Upper Room or
Cenacleon, that first Pentecost fills all
those who believe in the Trinity of God.
We recall and honour the Holy Spirit
each me we sign ourselves. But is the
Holy Spirit given the same importance as
God and Jesus Christ in our prayer and
appeal to the Trinity?
The Holy Spirit is omniscient like God
is. St Paul says no one comprehends
the thoughts of God except the Spirit
of God. St Augus ne says: In no other
subject is the danger of erring so great, or
the progress so dicult, or the fruit of a
careful study so appreciable.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
John 14:16-17: And I will ask the
Father, and he shall give you another
Paraclete, that he may abide with you
forever. The spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive; and in John 15:26:
But when the Paraclete cometh, whom I
will send you from the Father, the Spirit of
truth, who proceedeth from the Father,
he shall give tes mony of me." The Spirit
of consola on and of truth is also clearly
dis nguished in John 16:7, 13-15, from
the Son, from Whom He receives all He
is to teach the Apostles, and from the
Father, who has nothing that the Son also
does not possess. Both send Him, but
He is not separated from Them, for the
Father and the Son come with Him when
He descends into our souls (John 14:23).
What role does the Holy Spirit play in
our lives?
The Holy Spirit imprints on the hearts
of believers the words that Jesus said,
and precisely through these words, Gods
law. Ezekiels great prophecy in the Old
Testament is realized: I will sprinkle clean
water over you to make you clean; from
all your impuri es and from all your idols,

I will cleanse you. I will give you a new
heart, and a new spirit I will put within
you. I will put my spirit within you so
that you walk in my statutes, observe my
ordinances, and keep them (36:25-27).
St Augus ne says: Though really
dis nct, as a Person, from the Father and
the Son, He is consubstan al with Them;
being God like Them, He possesses with
Them, one and the same Divine Essence
or Nature.
Speaking at the general audience on
May 15, 2013 Pope Francis said: Jesus
says to his disciples: the Holy Spirit, he
will guide you to all truth (John 16:13),
He himself being the Spirit of truth (cf.
John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13). We live in an
age rather skep cal of truth.
The ques on arises: does the truth
really exist? What is the truth? Can we
know it? Can we find it, asks the Holy
Father providing an answer himself, It is
the Holy Spirit, the gi of the Risen Christ
that helps us recognize the Truth.
The Holy Spirit guides us into the
Truth. It provides a deeper communion
with Jesus himself, gi ing us knowledge
of the things of God. The Tradi on of the
Church arms that the Spirit of truth
acts in our hearts, provoking that sense
of faith (sensus fidei), through which, as
the Second Va can Council arms, the
People of God, under the guidance of the
Magisterium, adheres unwaveringly to
the faith given to the saints.

Why do we not pray to the Holy Spirit
as much as we pray to some popular
saints. The Holy Spirit provides us with
a rare sensi vity to the things of God.
The Holy Spirit provides us with the gi
of wisdom, the gi of counsel, the gi of
for tude, and the gi of knowledge.
Pope Francis asks: Are we open to
the Holy Spirit? Do we pray to the Holy
Spirit? Do we realize that interpre ng
the Bible would be dicult without the
inspira on of the Holy Spirit?
What are the sins against the
Holy Spirit?
St Mark, St Thomas and St Mathew
speak about the sin of blasphemy against
the Holy Spirit in the Bible. Scripture
speaks about how the sins against the
Holy Spirit are said to be unpardonable.
But according to St Thomas, the sin
against the Holy Spirit is remissible.
Be that as it may, The Holy Spirit grants
us supernatural virtues like charity, joy,
peace, pa ence, benignity, goodness,
longevity, mildness, faith, modesty,
con ngency, chas ty, according to St Paul
in Gala ans 5:22-23.
Where does the Holy Spirit reside?
I once a ended an intense adora on
conducted by Fr. Michael Payyapilly VC in
Divine Retreat Centre, Po a. The room
was dark with only a spot light on the
Holy Eucharist. There was a palpable aura
of God in the room. Suddenly, there was
a fragrance of flowers from nowhere
followed by a strange crackling of light.
This was followed by people crying aloud
and claiming to be healed. The Holy Spirit
had manifested himself.
We are all the temples of the Holy
Spirit. Let us whisper the li le prayer as
we contemplate the power of the Holy
Spirit this Pentecost:
Holy Spirit, be with me today. Be
my teacher, my guide, my counselor,
my friend. Fill me with your gi s of
wisdom, discernment, knowledge,
understanding, compassion, love, and
an awe of Gods presence.

1. The Virgin Mary. In
Catholic devotion we tend

and unique relationship

upon us just like Jesus told us he would.
Peter said a lot more that I can't remember, but the crowd
was hanging on every word. And he didn't go easy on them.
"This Jesus whom you crucified," he said, "God has raised
from the dead and exalted on high."
You could hear an audible gasp. Convic on was all over the
square. Someone called out, "What should we do?"
Without missing a beat, Peter answered, "Repent and be
bap zed every one of you for the forgiveness of your sins and
you'll receive the Holy Spirit, for the promise is to you, and to
your children, and to all who are afar o, everyone whom the
Lord our God calls."
"Where?" someone called. "Where can we be bap zed?"
"Bethesda," another shouted. "There's water at the Pool
of Bethesda." So the crowd started moving in that direc on.
Across town, through the narrow streets pushed this
strangely quiet crowd of thousands. Down the grade, down
the steps un l they came to the waters of the pool. They
stood at the edges, five to ten deep all around.
Peter was there by now and called for the apostles to
join him in the water. Not enough. Then he motioned for

me, and was a li le recovered, he rose up full of unwonted
joy, and immediately his body began to shake with a violent
tremor; and pu ng his hand to his bosom, he felt by the
side of his heart, a swelling about as big as a man's fist,
but neither then nor a erwards was it a ended with the
slightest pain or wound.
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, a er his death
(some me later) an autopsy found that two ribs had been
broken and curved outward to accommodate his enlarged
heart, which "had been dilated under the sudden impulse
of love."
5. St John Vianney. One of the greatest and most
beloved saints of the nineteenth century, St John Vianney
is perhaps not specially iden fied with the Holy Spirit in the
way that, say, someone like Philip Neri is. But the sec on
of his catechism on the Holy Spirit makes for a s mula ng
Pentecost media on. John Vianney seemed to have a vivid
grasp of the Holy Spirit's role in our lives as Chris ans that
his wri ngs on this topic are s ll quoted today. To take just
one example: "Take in one hand a sponge full of water, and
in the other a li le pebble; press them equally. Nothing will
me and other disciples to help. It was still. All you could
hear was weeping from some, deep sighs from others.
Peter looked out at the mul tude assembled around the
pool and spoke quietly. "This is a bap sm of repentance in
the name of Jesus the Nazarene, whom God raised from
the dead and exalted to the highest place. When you are
bap zed I want to assure you that you are both forgiven and
loved by God. And you will receive the same gi of the Holy
Spirit that you have seen upon us this day."
He invited people to come into the pool and they came by
the scores. We would bap ze them and they would come
up spu ering -- and laughing and singing. All over the Pool
of Bethesda that day we saw thousands -- someone counted
three thousand people -- praising God and worshipping.
I don't know if they were speaking in tongues or not. All I
know was that on that day, in that place, it seemed like the
languages of all na ons were turned toward God on High
who had brought salva on and the joy of his Holy Spirit
upon ordinary people who sought him -- from Jerusalem to
Cappadocia and beyond.
Pentecost. Ah, Pentecost. That was the day that God began to
pour out his Holy Spirit and he's never ever stopped since. Over
the years I've seen the Spirit come in many ways -- some mes
like that day, some mes quietly, some mes in jubila on. But it's
the presence of the Spirit, the Spirit of God, that ma ers, not
our emo ons or the circumstances.
Pentecost? Yes, I was there, and have never been the same
since. You have seen a Pentecost haven't you? Haven't you?
come out of the pebble, but out of the sponge will come
abundance of water. The sponge is the soul filled with the
Holy Spirit, and the stone is the cold and hard heart which is
not inhabited by the Holy Spirit."
6. St Vincent Pallo. A contemporary of John Vianney, St
Vincent Pallo is described by the Catholic Encyclopedia as
"a second Philip Neri." Like his spiritual predecessor Pallo
was both en rely commi ed to serving the people of Rome
and he had a special connec on to the Holy Spirit. As the
story goes, when he was a struggling student, his mother
encouraged him to pray to the Holy Spirit for help. He did,
asking for just one ray of illumina on, according to one
account. A er the novena, he soon became a star student.
7. Pope St. John Paul II. Like John Vianney, Pope St John
Paul II is not specially associated with the Holy Spirit.
But, it turns out that the third person of the Trinity was
a major emphasis of his teaching. John Paul II was one of
the few popes to dedicate an encyclical to the Holy Spirit.
He has also left us a series of Wednesday audiences and a
prayer to the Holy Spirit.

he devaluation of human life
began, relatively speaking,
around the early Nineteen
Sixties. It was the time of the
great Cultural Revolution[s]. This had
many complex ingredients and many
subsidiary revolutions. The campaign
for nuclear disarmament (CND), the
women's' liberation movements
(the public burning of bras was one
explicit manifestation), the pacifism
of the 'Flower Children' (otherwise
known as the Hippies), the spread of
so-called animal rights movements,
etc. The women's liberation
movement was just one component in
this cultural maelstrom. What really
took the world by storm was the so-
called 'sexual revolution' which still
haunts us till this day.
The sexual revolu on branched out
into several dierent movements,
some of which were quite legi mate
and others which were weird and self-
destruc ve. Equal rights for women
in employment and in payment of
wages was en rely reasonable and
just. Employment needs to be on the
basis of qualifica on and not of sex.
Similarly, payment should be made on
the basis of work done, not on the basis
of who does the work. Employment
discrimina on, unfortunately, s ll
con nues, and disparity in payment
for work done s ll persists. These
injus ces need to be resolved as early
as possible.

dominion over his own body. Irreversible
steriliza on is now so common as a
mode of contracep on that couples
are forced to adopt babies or resort to
surrogate motherhood. The desire for
unlimited dominion over one's own
body extends beyond contracep on.
The produc on of "test-tube" babies
is another indica on of the refusal
to accept the body's limita ons, so
too euthanasia and the use of organs
transplanted from those who are
"nearly" dead.
Even though "Humanae Vitae" was
ignored and even attacked by public
officials, thinkers and opinion makers,
its truths remain as valid and solid
today as ever. Pope John Paul II gave
fresh relevance to the immutable
doctrine of the divine purpose and
meaning of marriage and the family
in his now well known "Theology of
the Body" and his 1993 Encyclical
"Veritatis Splendor."
One unpredictable outcrop of the
"sexual revolu on" is what has now
come to haunt us in terrible ways.
It needs to be called what it really
is insanity because it is not only a
mental illness aic ng individuals; it
has also begun to determine ocial
policies and to influence judicial
decisions. In many parts of the U.S.A.
today telling a boy that he is a boy or
telling a girl that she is a girl is being
interpreted as "hate speech" and the
person who does so is being labelled
a bigot. Judicial pronouncements have
been issued prohibi ng schools from
providing separate bathrooms for those
who suddenly decide that they are
members of the opposite sex. School
Boards are being forced to conduct
"orienta on" classes for minor children
persuading them that "sexual iden ty"
and "gender orienta on" are whatever
they themselves might decide at any
point in me. Their subjec ve "feelings"
are really what ma ers. No one has the
right to tell a child what "its" gender
iden ty is at any given point of me.
The problem is becoming so widespread
and so acute that the American
College of Pediatricians in a Statement
dated March 21st. 2016 condemned
"gender transi oning" as child abuse.
The Statement starts out with the
proclama on that "facts not ideology
determine reality." The Statement
explains that there is a dierence
between an individual's biological
sex which is "an objec ve biological
binary trait" and the "sociological
and psychological concept of gender.
The American College of Pediatricians
then denounced the medical treatment
op ons many have been encouraging for
children who think they are transgender,
claiming gender dysphoria is s ll
considered a mental disorder.
Very unfortunately for us within the
Catholic Church there are influen al
voices which are reflec ng the false
ideology of the nature of the family
and the meaning and purpose of
marriageW. We need to revisit the
Encyclical "Familiaris Consoro" and
to re-educate ourselves about the
immutable truths about marriage and
the family. These truths have never,
and can never change, because they
are inherent in the very nature of the
sexual rela onship between a man and
a woman. The social consequences
of ignoring these truths are already
beginning to be felt worldwide: the
demand for abor on as a fundamental
human right, the demand for same sex
unions to be recognized as "marriages,"
the demand for euthanasia to be
"legi mized" by the State, the demand
for surrogate motherhood to be
popularized, and, in general, the
obsession with the culture of death.
There are some aspects of the Post
Synodal Apostolic Exhorta on Amoris
Laea which s ll need to be resolved,
but the re-arma on of the doctrine
of the Church is very welcome at this
cri cal moment of human history.

commitment to Climate

The archbishop of Mumbai is among 260 religious leaders who
signed an appeal to world leaders asking them to implement
immediately the Paris climate agreement. Ci ng Pope Francis
Laudato si encyclical, he stresses that it is the poor who pay
for pollu on. Step outside in India, and o en you will be
breathing some of the dir est city air on the planet, he writes.
Some 76 million people lack access to safe drinking water
in India; this is the largest number in the world. Periods of
extreme drought aect various States every year six of ten
of the most polluted ci es in the world are in India. Their
residents breathe air that is up to 15 mes more polluted than
the maximum allowable limit.
This has pushed Card Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai
and president of the Federa on of Asian Bishops Conferences,
to sign a declara on asking the worlds heads of state to put
into prac ce immediately the Paris climate agreement.
More than 260 religious leaders signed the declara on. In it,
they urge governments which ra fied the historic agreement
on climate change last week in New York to accelerate the
elimina on of subsidies to fossil fuel as part of the transi on
to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050.
Card Gracias is one of 20 Indian religious leaders who
signed the Interfaith Climate Change Statement. Wri ng in
The Hindustan Times about the appalling condi ons in which
people live in his country, he reminded his fellow ci zens of
how humanity is abusing our planet, a gi from God.
Faith communi es are already working hard to alleviate
many of the worlds problems, but we can do even more by
reducing emissions in homes, workplaces and centres of
worship, and to divest from fossil fuels and invest in renewable
sources of energy.
Keenan-Reuben murder case

Special womens court on Thursday convicted and sentenced
to life in jail all four men accused of the 2011 Amboli murder
of Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez while they were
defending their women friends from the 4 molesters.
The four men were arrested on October 20, 2011, the night
of the murder.
The incident sent shock waves across the country and was
followed by several campaigns seeking a safer environment

for women. Special judge Vrushali Joshi on Thurday
pronounced the verdict and the sentence in the presence of
the accused and the family members of the vic ms, Keenan
and Reuben, who were 24 and 29 years old, respec vely,
when they were murdered.
The accused, Jitesha Rana, Sunil Bodh, Sa sh Dulhaj and
Dipak Tival, have been in jail since their arrest.
Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said, There is direct
evidence to show that the accused were eve teasing and
moles ng girls when the vic ms tried to stop it. This is a pre
meditated murder as the accused had even threatened them
with their life and had come back with weapons to a ack them.
The vic ms were a acked a er a scue near a paan shop in
Amboli in Andheri (W).
The duo was standing there along with some women
friends when the group of men allegedly started harassing
the women. Keenan and Reuben were a acked a er they
tried to stop the harassment.
Keenan died soon a er the incident and Reuben died on
October 30, 2011, in a hospital in Andheri.
In January 2012, the police filed a 416-page chargesheet
before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate court. In October
2012, the court framed charges against the accused including
murder, conspiracy and molesta on.

Evangelization in
Catholic Church

The Archdiocese of Bombay witnessed the Evangeliza on
Training Programme from, April 17th to April 22nd 2016, held
at Retreat House, Bandra. This training programme began with
an emphasis on, Evangeliza on as the great commission and it is
the main mission of every Chris an. This great commission is not
an op on but mandatory and is essen al part of discipleship.
Bishop Agnelo Gracias men oned about the five main
Church documents on Evangeliza on. He also explained
the three main ques ons on Evangelisa on viz: What is
Evangeliza on?, Doctrinal principles underlying Evangeliza on?
and Requirements for Evangeliza on? Evangeliza on is
proclama on of the Good News. The Good News, he said, God
our Father, loves us and has made us children in Jesus Christ
by pouring out his Spirit into our hearts. The Church has been
proclaiming the Good News by following the examples of the
Apostles, who has carried out the command of the Risen Lord.
Bishop quoted several verses from the Bible to emphasise the
task that every Chris an must undertake to obey the command
given by Jesus Christ.
Fr. Vincent Barboza reminded the par cipants that the
iden ty of every Chris an is that he/she is a disciple of Jesus
Christ. He said, Only when we are true disciple of Jesus Christ,
we can make disciples for Christ. We as his disciples must go out
teaching the word of God, living the word of God and healing
people in Gods name.
The four condi ons of Evangeliza on were explained by Fr.
Henry D'Souza, Experience of Salva on, Zeal for the Gospel,
Awareness of the real world and Living according to the Gospel.
He clarified, "Personal experience of Jesus Christ is paramount
for proclaiming the word of God as we are no more teachers but
witnesses of the Gospel. The gospel should then be preached
with zeal a er being completely aware of the real world, i.e being
conscious of the social, economic, cultural and poli cal scenario.
This training programme was also addressed by several
others Reginald Pallami am, Rajeshwar Banerji, Cressie and
Sa sh Kona , who explained the basics, methodology and
other factors that go into Evangelisa on. The par cipants were
also sent out for a field experience for prac cal understanding
of Evangelisa on. Almost all the par cipants had a unique
experience which they shared later on that day.
The whole course was a great experience and the teachings
given there will help each of the par cipants to go out into the
world and make disciples of others too.

Women for a Better Tomorrow
The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women had organized a
seminar-cum-fun evening on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Holy
Name School Hall, Colaba from 3.30 p.m. - 6.00 p.m.
Sr. Phyllis (Salesian nun) led us to Praise and Worship.
The President, Phil Fernandes in her welcome address
men oned that the headlines in the newspapers marked
the end of the day of 400 years of gender bias. She
welcomed the large gathering. Fr. John Mascarenhas,
Spiritual Director said that Pope Francis made history by
washing the feet of Refugees including ladies. He stated
that in his parish they washed the feet of a sick girl whom
the doctors declared would not survive. After washing
her feet they all knelt and prayed for her recovery and
within a fortnight she was normal. The doctors had no
answer to this. Mr. Harish Sadani, Founder-Member
& Chief Functionary of Men Against Violence & Abuse
(MAVA) spoke about the gender-based violence where
male dominated society is projected as a male achiever.
Men are deemed to be finer human beings in educa on
and religion whereas women are not respected. The family
members tell girls but not boys to return home before dark
because of fear and anxiety. Hence men remain isolated
for transforma on, their ego gets a boost and this leads
to a wrong concept that boys are superior to girls. It is
mandatory now to have women in the Board of Directors.
Unfortunately, the fact remains that women are s ll not
paid on par with their male counterparts. A short video
clipping was shown on the disparity of behavior and
a tude between boys and girls in the family, followed by
an interes ng discussion. In spite of all the struggles and
dicult mes, women will hold their dignity, pursue their
resolves and see that their dreams are crystallized.
A er an entertaining evening of games and refreshments
the Dy. Mayor distributed the prizes. The message of Pope
Francis, who encourages women to have a role in the
Church as they think dierently was read out.
We thank our Chief Guest Alka Kerkar, Dy Mayor of
Mumbai. Who in spite of her busy schedule graced our
function. In her brief speech, she congratulated to the
Chris an Community and promised to help our community
in all possible ways.
Mt. Carmel Rink Hockey
Tournament 2016
Mt. Carmel Rink Hockey Tournament organized the Annual
Rink Hockey Tournament 2016, from the 27th -30th
April 2016 in collaboration with Kripa Foundation. The
tournament comprised teams participating in the men
veteran categories. Earnest John Group of Companies were
our main sponsors for the third year. Bank of India, Federal
Bank, Venus Confec oners, Mrs. Rita Pinto and The Sassy
Spoon were some of our other sponsors who made the
tournament possible.
Some top club teams of Mumbai like Republicans
Sports Club, Sea View, Hockey Dadar, Hockey Santacruz,
Companeroes, Kalina Village Boys, Mumbai Customs and
Union Bank participated in the tournament. 220 players
displayed their skills in the shorter format of the game
which is a total of 30 minutes per match. The winners in the
mens category were Mumbai Customs who beat Hockey
Dadar to win the tle. Sea View beat Kalina Village Boys to
be the winners in the veterans category.
The exhibition match between the priests of the
diocese and the veterans was a treat at the finals as Frs.
Melroy Fernandes, Nigel Barrett, John Barretto, Benhur
Rodrigues, Vincent DCruz, Lawrence DSouza took up
the challenge to score and give the veterans a tough
competition. They looked awesome in t-shirts that read

Council of Bombay SSVP
On Saturday, May 7, 2016 a Womens Seminar was organized.
Dr. Sr. Anitha Che ar, DHM, was the Speaker. A enthralling
film on the life of an ordinary lady, in a remote village in
Maharashtra, who even at the age of 8, was a victim of
socializa on, struggling to beat the odds to reach great heights
as a Social Worker, was conferred with numerous awards.
Dr. Sr. Anitha also made a presenta on on the making of an
NGO, the core values and the NGOs working in context of
our Society. She encouraged Vincentians to work towards
challenging social injustice, while working with the poor
and marginalized, as this was Jesus teaching and a core
Vincen an value.
A Workshop for youth was held on May 8, 2016 Fr.
Cleophas Braganza - SDB conducted the sessions. Beginning
with the need for all round development of Mind (intellect),
Body (physical), Heart (emotions) and Soul (spiritual), Fr.
Braganza made it amply clear that this was basic to a happy
life. Unfortunately, there is more focus on development of the
Mind and Body while the Emo onal and Spiritual development
are neglected, leading to an unbalanced personality.
A lot of Team Building lessons were learnt from the story
of Invictus, where Nelson Mandela, as President of South
Africa, had the undaun ng task of uni ng South Africa and
overcoming apartheid thus revealing the power of vision and
moral leadership.

Communal clash near church
Tension prevailed yesterday in Jobat town in Alirajpur district
of Madhya Pradesh after members of two communities
hurled stones at each other over alleged damage to saron
flags put up near a church and subsequent breaking of lamps
at its gate by a mob of right-wing ou its, police said.
Police have arrested six persons, including three suspected
members of right-wing organisa ons for allegedly damaging
the flags put up near the church during Ram Navmi fes val.
District unit BJP president Rakesh Agrawal and others have
been booked on charges of rio ng, defiling place of worship
and misbehaving with women, on the complaints of a pastor
of Zion Church and a woman.
According to Alirajpur district Addi onal Superintendent
of Police Meena Chauhan, the trouble started on the night
of May 3 with a complaint that Nirmal Raymond and his
brother Nigam Raymond have damaged saron flags which
were put up during the Hindu fes val of Ram Navmi near
the church.
The ocer said the police immediately registered a case
and went to the colony to arrest the brothers. However,
a mob of 500-odd people of right-wing organisations
reached the spot, following which the Raymond brothers hid
themselves in fear.
As members of the two communi es pelted stones at each
other, the police arrested Nirmal, Nigam and one Jitendra.
Meanwhile, the mob broke two or three electricity lamps at
the gate of the church before dispersing at around 2.30 AM,
the ASP said.
We have identified 16 people, including Agrawal, and
booked them for rio ng and other charges. We have arrested
three persons who are believed to be members of right wing
organisations. As we dont have enough evidence against
Rakesh Agrawal we havent arrested him, Chauhan said.
Emmanuel Ariel, the priest of the Church of North Indias
(CNI) Zion Parish, said that led by Agrawal, ac vists of the RSS,
BJP and Bajarang Dal pelted stones at community members,
misbehaved with our women and broke Churchs lamps. The
pastor said members of his community did not damage the
saron flags. He also denied reports that the mob stormed
the compound of the church and vandalised it.
Chauhan said the town was tense over the turn of events.
But we are trying our best to bring the situation under
control, she added.

Divine Mercy Prayer Chain
The Diocese of Miao in Arunachal Pradesh has started
a Divine Mercy Prayer Chain as part of its programme
during the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
It is our way of participating in the Jubilee of
Mercy event of the Universal Church, said Fr. Jose
Chemparathy, the Vicar General of Diocese.
Miao Diocese has organized various spiritual events
during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy that Pope
Francis has called for the universal Church from
December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016.
Bishop George Palipparambil of Miao has organized the
Divine Mercy Prayer Chain across the diocese from April
1 to November 13 as part of a series of ini a ves to make
the faithful experience Gods Mercy in a special way.
The event was inaugurated in Miao with the special
prayer and Divine Mercy chaplet in which many faithful
participated. It included Adoration and Divine Mercy
prayer in Neotan Parish and several other centres.
Bishop George offered a special prayer for the
success of the Divine Mercy Prayer Chain. We feel
specially blessed by God as this year coincides with the
10th Anniversary of the Diocese of Miao. We pray for
Gods Mercy and blessings on all of us in the Diocese
throughout this Jubilee, he said.
Miao Diocese has organized several Year of Mercy
events. A retreat for catechists was organized from April
25 to 29 at Divine Renewal Retreat Centre, Margehrita, in
which 350 catechists, woman leaders and youth leaders
participated.
Earlier, a retreat for priests, held at Bishops House in
Miao from February 29 to March 5, was preached by Fr.
Panneer Selvam, one of the 762 Missionaries of Mercy
from around the world officially commissioned by Pope
Francis to forgive even the sins that are reserved for the
Holy See to pardon. Another retreat for nuns working in
Miao Diocese was held from March 6 to 12.

Eight killed in stampede at
Hindu festival
Eight people were killed and 90 injured when a ligh ng storm
in Ujjain city on May 5, sparked a stampede among thousands
gathered for the Hindu Kumbh Mela religious fes val.
The heavy rain collapsed several makeshift structures
erected for the monthlong fes val that began on April 22.
Pilgrims believe bathing in the Kshipra River will absolve
them of their sins.
One was killed by lightening and the rest on account
of the stampede and being caught under the collapsed
structures, said administra ve head Ravindra Pastaur.
Catholic volunteers from Ujjain Diocese, who had set up a
first aid sta on for the fes val, were providing care for the
injured, said Father Lijo Sebas an of the church-run Pushpa
Mission Hospital.
He said their first aid sta on near the fes val site was also
destroyed in the storm but volunteers took care of many of
the injured pilgrims regardless, he said.

Church demands action
against murder and rape
With political parties, social activists and women
organisations protesting over the increasing number of
violence against women, the Catholic Church on Sunday
urged governments in Kerala and the centre to intensify the
eorts to book the culprits involved in the brutal killing of a
young law student.
30-year-old Jisha was raped and murdered at her home in
Perumbavoor in Kerala on April 28. The autopsy report said
that the vic m's intes nes were ripped out and that she
had suered 30 wounds on her body, including two deep
stab wounds on the chest. There has been no significant
breakthrough, and the state police are yet to make any
arrest in the case.
In a statement, the Catholic Bishops Conference
of India (CBCI) Council for Women condemned the
barbarous and horrific act against a woman. The
council expressed its deep concern for the life and
dignity of women in the country.
The statement said: It appears ironical that a woman is
taunted, molested and abused at every walk of life and she
is not safe even in her own house and arises ques ons as to
how far women are safe and secure today in India. It is more
vulnerable in the case of women from economically and
socially backward sec ons.

Lutheran pastor
found murdered
The murder of a Lutheran minister in India's tribal-
dominated Jharkhand state shows that Chris ans are now
becoming a target for a acks, Chris an leaders said.
The body of the Rev. Abraham Soreng of Goosner
Evangelical Lutheran Church was found with multiple
injuries May 6. His funeral was conducted on the next day in
his Kadma village of Kun district in Jharkhand.
Inves ga ng police ocer Ranveer Singh, who examined
the body, told ucanews.com that the murder appears to be
the result of a conspiracy.
The state, where the Hindu na onalist Bhara ya Janata
Party is in power, has reported several crimes against
Chris ans.
Christian leaders such as Subhash Kongari consider
this as part of an ongoing a ack against Chris ans in the
state. Kongari, who is state Vice President of Rashtriya Isai
Mahasangh (national Christian forum), said the murder
is the "outcome of a deep rooted conspiracy against
Chris ans" in the state.
Kongari told ucanews.com that Jharkhand recently has
been witnessing "organized crimes against Christians"
orchestrated by Hindu organiza ons that are trying to make
India a Hindu theocra c state.
"Any act of violence is condemnable, when it comes to
a religious person, it is more condemnable," said Auxiliary
Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas of Ranchi, secretary-general
of the Indian Catholic bishops' conference.
"Eorts are underway to polarize the popula on in the
state, which is not going to help anybody," he said.
Indian media has reported several instances of attacks
against pastors, churches being destroyed and of Hindu
groups beating tribal Christians, and threatening to kill
them if they do not renounce Christ. There are also reports
of forcing them out of the villages and banning missioners
from villages.
Hindu groups have also accused Christians of luring
poor villagers to Chris anity with material oers and have
reiterated the party's demand for laws to check conversions
to Chris anity.

SYRIA
Things Were Never So Bad
In an urgent appeal to the outside world, Franciscan Father
Ibrahim Alsabagh is calling on Christians throughout the
world to pray for the Syrian city of Aleppo, currently caught
up in the midst of heavy figh ng.
Never, since the beginning of this terrible war were things
as bad as they are now. I have no words to describe all the
suering I see on a daily basis, the friar told interna onal
Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need.
He said: Rockets and bombs are raining down on churches,
mosques, schools and hospitals. Now 17 people have been
killed in an a ack on our hospital. And the casual es may
yet be higher. So many houses have been par ally or en rely
destroyed, and so many people killed or severely injured. And
when the bombs do stop falling, there is an eerie silence, like
in a cemetery. The streets are as though everyone has died.
Father Alsabagh has been working for almost two years
now in this divided city of northern Syria, the scene of fierce
figh ng between the Syrian government and rebel groups.
He con nued: Whoever can escape, does so. On Sunday the
roads out of the city were packed with refugees. Those who
remain behind are the poorest of all, the ones who cannot
even aord to look for a place of safety. We are helping them,
wherever and however we can.
The priest also reported that the number of nervous
breakdowns are increasing, and we now have so many
psychological illnesses as a result of the war. There is so much
misery. But at least I thank God that through His grace I am
able to be a good Samaritan to all the suering people. I try
to console them with the word of God, but also with deeds of
corporal mercy. We priests and religious have really become
fathers, and s ll more mothers, to the people, trying to bind
up their wounds tenderly, like a mother.
Yet, the Friar concluded: though the cross that the local
Chris ans are carrying is very heavy, this suering also creates
a communion with God and with one another such as I have
never seen before. My faith and my priestly voca on have
grown here in Aleppo.

"A new Vatican magazine will give attention to womens
voices, something that often has been missing in the
church despite womens important role in announcing
the Gospel," said Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
If we do not listen attentively to the voice of women
in the great decisive moments in the life of the church,
we would lose the crucial contribution of the feminine
genius in the church, Cardinal Parolin, Vatican secretary
of state, said at an event on May 3, launching the
magazine format.
Women-Church-World, which began as a monthly
insert in the Vatican newspaper, will now feature two
new sections: one focusing on art with womens
sensitivity and power of expression, and the other on
the Bible, according to LOsservatore Romanos website.
The renovation comes in response to many womens
need to share, reflect and make their voices heard, the
newspaper said.
Cardinal Parolin said the new magazine serves not only
to make the presence of women in the church known,
but to pave the way to a new and positive habit of
listening to women. Women-Church-World, he added,
hopes to implement the male and female synergy that
so often has been invoked in official documents but not
always put into practice.
Today, therefore, it is necessary to explore together
- - m e n a n d wo m e n , l ay a n d co n s e c rate d - - t h e
interpretation of sacred texts and draw ideas to reshape
and expand the role and service -- not the servitude -- of
women in the church, the cardinal said.

Obama to Reduce Nuclear
Risks in Hiroshima
The heads of four leading science and faith organizations
called on President Obama, who will likely visit
Hiroshima, Japan, later this month for the G7 summit,
to announce specific steps the United States will take
to reduce the real and urgent risks posed by nuclear
weapons and prevent a new global nuclear arms race.
Since Saint Pope John XXIII issued Pacem in Terris in
1963, the Catholic Church has called for a world free of
nuclear weapons. Faith and reason, religion and science,
agree on this issue, said Bishop Oscar Cant, chairman
of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
Committee on International Justice and Peace. Nuclear
weapons pose a moral challenge and represent an
existential threat that requires action now.
A statement released May 4, by Bishop Cant; Ken
Kimmell, President of the Union of Concerned Scientists;
Leith Anderson, president of the National Association
of Evangelicals; and Gabriel Salguero, president of the
National Latino Evangelical Coalition called on President
Obama to:
-Scale back the U.S. plan to build a new generation of
nuclear weapons, including canceling the new destabilizing
and unneeded nuclear-armed cruise missile;
-Reduce the U.S. deployed strategic arsenal by a third,
a level the Pentagon agrees is adequate to maintain
security; and
-Remove U.S. land-based nuclear missiles from
hair-trigger alert, which would reduce the risk of an
accidental, mistaken or unauthorized launch.
The groups met with U.S. National Security Advisor
Susan Rice in November 2015 to express concern that the
risk of nuclear weapons use may be on the rise, and to
urge the administration to take concrete steps to reduce
that risk.

Fr. Tom missing, but bishop
hopeful
Two months a er being kidnapped in Yemen, Salesian priest
Tom Uzhunnalil remains missing, although a bishop involved
in his case remains hopeful about his mely release.
The last words, which are quite reassuring, I received
indirectly about ten days ago. I was told that Father Tom is
alive, and that his return to freedom could be imminent,
said Bishop Paul Hinder OFM Cap, Apostolic Vicar of
Southern Arabia. But since then nothing has happened. We
hope and pray for him.
Fr Uzhunnalil, an Indian national, was abducted in
April, when four gunmen attacked a Missionaries of
Charity-run re rement home in Aden, Yemen, killing 16
people, including four Missionary of Charity sisters. The
a acks are thought to have been perpetrated by Islamist
terrorists, though no group has claimed responsibility for
the incident. Both the Islamic State and al-Qaeda have a
presence in the area.
Rumors began spreading during Holy Week that Fr. Tom
was to be crucified on Good Friday, although those reports
were later retracted. Fr Uzhunnalils Salesian community

and the bishop of the local Church dismissed the rumors as
false informa on, warning that spreading such rumors was
irresponsible and could be harmful.
Indian security ocials are involved in nego a ons for
his release. The specifics of the ongoing inves ga on and
nego a ons have not been revealed so as to protect the life
of Fr Tom.

Boom in Vocations
Although Christians in Pakistan are suffering frequent
persecution, 95 per cent of the country has seen a great
increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life
in recent years.
Fr Inayat Bernard, Rector of the Santa Maria Minor
Seminary in Lahore said the increase was a sign of Gods
blessing who is always close to his people.
Fr Bernard, who leads 26 young seminarians, said there
were 23 priestly ordinations, including diocesan and
religious priests, since the beginning of 2015 to date, and 15
new deacons who are preparing to be ordained in 2016.
Meanwhile, 79 major seminarians are studying at the
Karachi National Institute of Theology, and 96 at the
major seminary dedicated to St Francis Xavier in Lahore.
Fr Inayat said there were also many new vocations in
womens religious orders: a sign of hope that instills
confidence and courage even in difficult moments.
It is true that the Christian community, in the complex
socio-political situation in Pakistan, sometimes suffers
from discrimination or incidents of violence, such as
the attack which took place at Easter in Lahore, while
terrorism strikes indiscriminately religious, civil and
military targets he said. But these difficulties do not
affect our freedom and the faith of the people, but
strengthens it and today we are appreciating the fruits.
It is true that martyrdom, which we sometimes
experience, is in itself the seed of new Christians and
remains a gift of God that only through faith one can
understand and live, he concluded.

Pope Shares Three Lynchpins
Sir, On April 22, 2016, Pope Francis in his daily morning
homily reminded the faithful that there are three interlinked
dimensions of a Christian life Three Lynchpins; which
should mark the life of believers.
1. Announcement: When John and Peter were brought
before the Sanhedrin after the healing of the crippled
man, they were forbidden to preach in the name of Jesus.
But they courageously replied that they could not stop
proclaiming what they had seen and heard (Acts 4). This
is the Good News; that Christ is Alive! Christ is Risen!
Christ is among us in the community, and accompanies
us in our journey.
2. Intercession: At the Last Supper, Jesus assured his
disciples that He is praying for them, and preparing a place
in the house of the Lord (John Ch. 14). And just as He told
Peter, I have prayed for you (Luke 22:32), in the same way,
Jesus is now the Intercessor between the Father and us. He
intercedes by showing His precious wounds to His Father,
and names each one of us to Him.
3. Hope: A Christian is a person of Hope in the Lords
return. In fact the whole Church is waiting anxiously for
the second coming of the Lord in glory. What better hope!
And if I may add a Scripture spice from St. Paul: Which
is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is Christ Whom we
proclaim so that we may present everyone mature in
Christ (Colossians 1:27-28).

Sir, This is with reference to the ar cle on career which
appeared as editorial in the Examiner dated April 23-29,
2016 and the subsequent le er to the editor of Mr Xavier

Sir, RTO and trac cops are at it again by making the lives
tougher for flou ng trac rules. It is decided that the driving
licences will be suspended for three months on the spot
if one commits anyone of the six oences such as speed
viola on, drunken driving, jumping the red signal, talking on
the phone while driving, using private vehicles for illegal public
Transport or as commercial vehicle, overloading of vehicles.
The stringent decision implemented sincerely would be a huge
deterrent to many regular oenders and will surely reduce a
lot of accidents and save many lives.
So next me be aware when you are at the steering wheel,
the cops are out there to nab you for any one of the oences

Sir, There is the well known story of a group of water
beetles, swimming around in a pond, living a rou ne life,
and wondering what was beyond their water world. Now and
then, an adventurous water beetle would climb up a reed,

MPs Salary Hike theyve
lost it !
Sir, When the Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the
well-o ci zens of our country to give up their LPG Gas
Subsidy, thousands and thousands responded posi vely; this
was to enable the government to provide cheaper LPG to the
needy and the poor. I wonder what is his percep on of well-
o . Does it include the big or small business people, or CEOs
of large corporate houses, or the higher-income salaried class ?
Oh, but perhaps our Honourable Members of Parliament
(MPs) do NOT fall in this category of well-o - our MPs are
really the poor class of society. And so, a er the last 300%
massive hike in MPs salary & allowances, yet another proposal
has been passed a couple of days ago, to double the salaries
of our Honourable MPs, from the present Rs.50000.00 p.m.
to Rs. 1.00 Lac p.m. and also to double their allowances !
Besides, they are also clamouring for a host of other facili es.
Should Mr. Narendra Modi, not classify our MPs as well-o ?
Several parts of the country, especially Maharashtra, are
facing severe drought conditions, farmers are commiting
suicide as they cannot make ends meet. And here we have our
elected representa ves giving themselves a massive salary
hike ! They should be ashamed of themselves oh how can
they ? They have lost it long me ago !
A couple of days ago, there was a newsreport which says
the former Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh has proposed
that his party MPs donate their salaries to his party fund as the
party is in need of funds ! What about the suering farmers ?
What about those struggling to make a living ? Who will help
them ? Can we expect our MPs from ALL poli cal par es,
contribu ng towards allevia ng the suerings of the less
fortunate countrymen ? Is it too much to ask of our well-o
MPs ? Or should we say, theyve lost it ?

The pay-scale for the post of Assistant Professor is as prescribed by the UGC, Government of Maharashtra and
University of Mumbai from time to time.
The required minimum qualifications for the post of Assistant Professor are as follows:-

i. Good academic record as defined by the concerned university with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in
a point scale wherever grading system is followed) at the Masters Degree level in a relevant subject from an Indian
University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
ii. Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET)
conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC like SLET/SET.
iii. Not withstanding anything contained in sub-clauses (i) and (ii) above, candidates, who are, or have been awarded
a Ph. D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for
Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility
condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in
Colleges/Institutions.
iv. NET/SLET/SET shall also not be required for such Masters Programmes in disciplines for which NET/SLET/SET
is not conducted.

A relaxation of 5% may be provided at the graduate and masters level for the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/
Differently-abled (Physically and visually differently-abled) categories for the purpose of eligibility and for assessing
good academic record during direct recruitment to teaching positions. The eligibility marks of 55% marks (or an
equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories
mentioned above are permissible, based on only the qualifying marks without including any grace mark procedures.

A relaxation of 5% may be provided, from 55% to 50% of the marks to the Ph.D. Degree holders, who have obtained
their Masters Degree prior to 19 September, 1991.

Applicants who are already employed must send their application through proper channel. Applicants are required to
account for any breaks, if any in their academic career. The detail of the qualification, pay scale & allowance will be
supplied on request from applicants.
