Title of the Lesson: The Protestant Reformation Begins Notes

Summary: Students will be able to identify the factors that weakened the Catholic Church and the importance of Martin Luthers ideas during the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. They will also be able to summarize the essential question by using the notes they take while reading the assigned text. Grade Level: 7 Time Frame: 50 minutes Subject: World History- The Reformation Objectives: Students will: Analyze and take notes on text about Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation through the lens of an essential question Summarize the essential question after they read the assigned text and take focused notes on main ideas and important topics. Standards: 7.9.1 List the causes for the internal turmoil in and weakening of the Catholic church (e.g.,tax policies, selling of indulgences). 7.9.2 Describe the theological, political, and economic ideas of the major figures during the Reformation (e.g., Desiderius Erasmus, Martin Luther, John Calvin, William Tyndale). Essential Questions: 1. What factors led to the weakening of the Catholic Church and the beginning of the Reformation? Materials: History Alive! Textbook, spiral notebook, computer, Google Classroom application, Sequence of Activities: 1. Silent Reading: Students will silent read the introduction to Lesson 30 in their TeachTCI textbook. After they read the introduction, they will verbally discuss what they just read with their partner. (10 minutes) 2. Focused Notes: Students will read independently or as a whole group (class will vote) and take focused notes on what they read. ( 35 minutes ) 3. 95 Theses Rap Video: Students will watch a parody video about the Martin Luthers 95 Theses https://youtu.be/dt5AJr0wls0 ( 5 minutes ) Accommodations, Adaptations, and Differentiated Instruction: A notes template is provided on a Google Doc for all students to view on Google Classroom A timer will be used in the classroom to keep the students on task all period To keep the process of choosing students to share out totally random, I will use a random name wheel application at https://www.classtools.net/random-name-picker/ There will be questions provided on a Google Doc that will help students focus their note taking on main ideas and important topics
