What was observed: Year 12 English class.

Setting out lesson structure


Had exam and SAC dates on the board for reminders to the students.
Reiterating exam preparation for mid year exam
Sent out wrong document for the class to read and discuss, caused the class
to lose engagement. Re-uploaded the document (Unpacking a text response text)
and went through document with students (Use of ICT)
Discussing What is a to extent question, what is a discuss question. How to
write them.
Reiterating the need for synonyms and a range of words to use in their exams
Having students re-write the essay statement by using different words than
those used in the statement. Allowing students to give their re-written examples.
How to write a language analysis essay. What needs to be included in the
essay? Reiterating the need to put forward your point of view
Brainstorm the ideas and arguments related to the essay topic.
Speaking with the students and allowing them to express their opinions,
thoughts and ideas in an open manner
Asks students to present their answer or examples of work they have done so
far, and giving immediate verbal feedback to the student.
Class began to disengage with the lesson towards the end of class.

What did I learn?

Although the students are in Year 12 and are more mature and self regulated with their
behaviour, it is still important to be organised and prepared for class. When the wrong
document was uploaded and time was taken to re upload the correct document the students
lost focus and disengaged with the lesson.

Allowing students to express their thoughts and opinions on the subject/topic through
brainstorming allows them to stay engage because they feel comfortable in the classroom.
By providing students immediate verbal feedback on their answers/responses to the work
allows the students to make immediate changes to their work to improve.

Keeping the class moving by having a number of short points to make so that the class
doesnt become bogged down in too much detail and the class becoming boring.
