IV. Procedure
A.Motivation
In mathematics, the Pythagorean Theorem, also known as Pythagoras's
theorem, is a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a
right triangle. It states that the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right
angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

B. Discussion
Distance Between Two Points
The distance formula is derived from the Pythagorean Theorem. To find the
distance between two points (x 1, y1) and (x2, y2), all that you need to do is to use the
coordinates of these ordered pairs and apply the formula.

c = a + b ---> Pythagorean Theorem

Distance Formula
d = (Difference of x- coordinates) + (Difference of y-coordinates)
d = (x2 - x1) + (y2 - y1)2

Example 1
The point A is at (6, 4) and the point B is at (-3,-4). Find the distance between two
points. Calculate the perimeter and classify the triangles into its kind.
Solutions and Answers.

(x1, y1) and (x2, y2)

^ ^ ^ ^
(6, 4) and ( -3, -4)

Distance Perimeter of the triangle

d = (x2 - x1) + (y2 - y1) P=a+b+c
d = (-3 -6) + (-4 - 4) P = 9 + 8 + 12
d = (-9) + (-8) P = 29
d = 81 + 64

d= 145

d = 12.04 scalene triangle

Example 2
Find the radius of a circle, given that the center is at (2, -3) and the point ( -1, -2 )
lies on the circle.
d = (x2 - x1) + (y2 - y1)2
d = (-1 - 2) + [-2 - (-3)]
d = (-3) + (-2 +3)
d = 9 + 1
d = 10
d = 3.16
Example 3
You are putting up a flagpole in your back yard, which requires you to put in
cement footing in order to keep the flagpole upright. Cement takes a couple days to fully
set, so you are required to attach three support wires to the flagpole in order to keep the
flagpole vertical while the cement dries. In order to properly support the flagpole, the
support wires are attached to the top of the flagpole, the support wires are stretched
tight, and then staked to the ground. From the base of the flagpole, the three stakes are
located at point A (-9, -4), point B (-10, -4) and point C (12, -4). If the flagpole is at (0, 8)
and base of the flagpole is at (0, -4. How long the three support wires from the top of the
flagpole to the staked point on the ground?

Distances
Point A Point B
d = (x2 - x1) + (y2 - y1)2 d = (x2 - x1) + (y2 - y1)2
d2 = [0 (-9)] 2 + [8 (-4)] 2 d2 = [0 (-10)] 2 + [8 (-4)] 2
d2 = (0 + 9)2 + (8 +4)2 d2 = (0 +10)2 + (8 + 4)2
d2 = 92 + 122 d2 = 102 + 122
d2 = 81 + 144 d2 = 100 + 144

d= 225 d= 244

d = 15 d = 15.62
Scalene Triangle Scalene triangle
Point C
d = (x2 - x1) + (y2 - y1)2
d2 = (0 -12)2 + [8 (-4)] 2
d2 = (-12)2 + (8 + 4)2
d2 = 144 + 122
d2 = 144 + 144

d= 288

d = 16.97 Isosceles triangle

Example 4

Find the distance between two points where point A is located at (-4, 0) and point
B at (0, 4). Calculate the perimeter and classify the triangle into its kind.
Solutions and Answers

Find the distance. Find the perimeter.

d = (x - x) + (y - y) P = a + b+ c
d = [0 (-4)] + (4 0) P=4+4+4 2

d = (0 +4) + (4 0) P = 8 + 4 2 units
d = 4 + 4
d = 16 +16
d = 32
d = 32

d= 162

d=4 2 Isosceles triangle

C. Application

the perimeter and classify the triangles into its kind.

a. P (2, 7) and Q (5, 11)

b. P (-2, 9) and Q (4, 6)

c. P (5, 6) and Q (-3, -4)

V. Evaluation

coordinate plane then classify the triangles into its kind. Calculate also the perimeter of
each triangle.

1. (0, -2) and (-5, -1)

2. (6, 4) and (-5, -1)
3. (-6, -10) and (-2, -10)
4. (5, 9) and (-7, -7)
5. (2, -9) and (-1, 4)

VI. Assignment

1. Find the length between the following points using the distance formula and
make a graphical representation of your findings.
a. (0, 4) and (2, 3)
b. (-3, 7) and (5, -7)
2. Jack and Emily go to the same school, which is located at (0, 0) on a grid.
Jack walks 5 blocks east and 2 blocks south to get home from school. Emily
walks 6 blocks north and 7 blocks west to get to her house from school. What
is the distance between Jack and Emilys house?
