Applying to a Professional Brief

Plans
Prepared plans to meet requirements (ILPs, Milestones etc)
For both unit 32 and 78 I have completed an ILP. An ILP allows me to keep track of what
tasks I have completed within an assignment and what tasks still need to be completed by a
certain date. Below are examples of ILPs from both units assignment 3.

Another type of plan I made to help me meet the briefs requirements were milestones. At
the start of an assignment, usually the last assignment within a unit, I would set three
milestones for the length of the assignment. These would state what main task I would
have completed by the date set for it. Below is an example of my set of milestones from unit
78.
I also used one other method within unit 32, which was a Gantt chart. A gantt chart is a
chart that briefly states what tasks need completing by a specific date. I have placed an
example of this below.

Relevant legislation to be followed

For any unit in which I have to create my own product/text for I needed to make sure I went
by legal and ethical codes and conventions so that I didnt run into any legal or ethical
complications. Below I will place the first 2 pages of my legal and ethical document and a
screenshot of page 3 from unit 78.

Legal and Ethical

Copyright laws:
Copyright is a legal right created by the country that gives the original creator of a piece of
work the exclusive rights of use and distribution. Before this act was created there was very
little anyone who created something could legally if someone steal their work for their own.
The Copyright designs and patents act was created in 1988 and can cover anything anyone
has created including songs, videos, pictures and text. This law can protect somebodys
creation up until 50 years after their
death. I need to take the copyright law in
to consideration whilst creating my
advert, as I will be using videos that have
been taken off the internet. I would be
able to register to copyright my product
online instead of having to go to any office
straight away I could use the UK
Copyright Service (Link: https://secure.copyrightservice.co.uk/). To register for copyright
seems easy to do on the internet, I have placed a screenshot of what information is required
to apply to the right. To
apply for copyright online
costs money whereas to do
it formally it is free. I will
place a screenshot of the
charges section below. As
I will be using text,
pictures and videos in my
product I will need to do some research into the pictures I use as they could be copyrighted
by the owner and if I use them in my advert I could get into trouble by the law.

Ethical considerations:
When you are working on any type of media that can be viewed or heard by another person
taking into consideration the ethical side of things is a must for anyone as certain people
can be very easily offended and if I published something that offended someone in any way
they could take up legal action and try to possibly sue me. Ethical considerations can
consist of;

Racism (White/Black)
Gender (Male/Female)
Sexuality (Hetero/Homosexual)
Disability (Able bodied/Other)
Nationality (British/Other)
Class (Working/Middle/Upper)
Regionalism (North/South)
Age (Young/Old)
These considerations mean that you cannot refer to either group as inferior to one another
as people can be offended. If you do not take these factors into consideration the company
could be sued and the production not allowed to be shown.

There are some laws that go in place with these ethical considerations. For example it is
against the law to discriminate against;

Age
Sexual Orientation
Race
Gender
Religion

It is vital that I take ethics into consideration as I do not want to be sued so need to be as
balanced as possible. My advert target audience is 14-17, therefore I cannot be one sided to
either gender or age group whilst writing my text as someone could get offended. My
product will incorporate picture and videos so I need to be careful that there are no inferior
opinions in the videos and I need to have written permission of someone to say I can use the
videos.
Timescales
Deadlines
To help me stick to and meet deadlines there were a few different methods I used. These
were ILPs, Milestones and Gantt charts.

78.

I also used
one other method within unit 32, which was a Gantt chart. A gantt chart is a chart that
briefly states
what tasks need
completing
by a specific
date. I have
placed an example of
this below.
Resources and Sources
As part of unit 32 I had to collect all of
my assets that I was going to be using
in the creation of my TV ident. When
collecting these assets I had to create
a document with screenshots of the
files themselves. I will place a
screenshot of the asset files I collected
and created for this unit.

In unit 78 I took information from

many different sites and sources to do
this successfully without any legal
complications I had to create a
sources document which contained to
link to every different place I took
information, I have placed some
evidence of my sources document below.
Development of Projects
Brainstorms
A brainstorm is a simple planning technique in which I can plan many different aspects of a
project all in one document. In unit 4, I had to create a brainstorm to help me plan for a
video project. In this brainstorm, I planned into four different types of product I could
advertise and chose the one I wanted to focus on. Below I will copy and paste my brainstorm
from unit 4.

Brainstorm
Cereal Bar
Design my own packaging for the product so that people know what Im advertising.
I would need a prop to represent my cereal bar.
When filming there isnt many restrictions in what ideas I can produce, therefore it
should be easy to come up with ideas for the advert.
Could film outside or inside.
Wont need many actors. 1-2 would suffice.

Trainers
Will need to design a logo for the new trainer brand.
Create a design for the shoe.
So many different styles of trainer out there to pick from.
Casual trainers will be easier to design but me be harder to create an advert for as
casual trainers dont really have a purpose other than to be fashionable.
Will need actors to model the trainers.
College
Filming is really limited to campus and around campus as it is advertising the
college.
Advert could contain interviews with students and teachers.
Props are not really necessary but during interviews I could add in a sort of set to
make the college look good.
Would need lots of actors.
I would need permission from actors to film them as they may not want to be filmed.

Radio
Actor needed depending on what kind of advert I go for.
Could make my advert animated.
My target audience could be many different age ranges.
The music genre I would choose is charts and popular songs.
I may need an actor to be my radio presenter.

The subject I am going choose is to advertise the college. I chose this because I have the
opportunity to film my advert around the college and use the students as the actors for my
advert. Also chose this because I can be creative with how I advertise the college.

Mind-maps
A mind map is another way of planning something in detail. I did not create a mind map
this year.

Proposal
Within every unit in which I must create a product, I must first come up with a proposal to
state what will be included in my product and how I will create it. For both unit 32 and 78 I
had to create a proposal to show the client how I would create the product. Below I will
place evidence of both proposals.
Script

In unit 32, I had to create a script to state

what would

happen throughout my TV

ident.

Below I will place the script I created for that assignment.

In the first scene of my ident, my logo will transition onto the screen so that the viewer
knows what they are watching straight away. After my logo the ident will then go on to
showing short 1-2-second-long clips from the chat shows, sitcoms and music videos that I
have chosen to use, each clips will also have a transition effect on it. Finally, the last scene
of my ident will show the logo again but have a voice over saying The Grid I think will be
effective as it also speaks to the viewer directly.

Meet requirements of brief

In unit 32 after creating my TV ident, I had to create a questionnaire, gather statistical
feedback, and create a statistical analysis of each question. Below I will place a screenshot
of both my questionnaire and statistical analysis.

Statistical Evaluation
To help get feedback on my animation I created a questionnaire, which I asked 10
classmates to answer. Here I will analyse three of the questions that were answered to see
how I could make my animation better on my resubmission.
Question 7

Looking at question 7, I asked people to rate my animation out of 10. I have put the results
into a chart below.

Question 10

10; 11%
6.5; 22%
8; 22%

7.6; 11% 7; 33%

6.5 7 7.6 8 10

This chart shows what rating people gave my animation, and how many gave the same
answer. From this chart, I can see that four people rated my animation as a 7 which I am
very pleased with, as it shows that they think my animation is at a good enough quality to
be shown to my audience. Although people rated it a seven, in a later question asking them
if they had any other comments about my animation two of the people said that my
animation needed music. Therefore if I took there feedback and added in sound to my
animation on my resubmission they may rate my animation higher than the original. 1
person rated my animation as a 10 and in the comments section put that my animation was
really good. From this rating and comment I could see that people think my animation is
good and that I might not have needed to do anything to update it but because more people
rated my animation with a lower number I would have to take their feedback into account to
see what I could do to change my animation.

Question 5

In question five, I asked if people thought my animation was suitable for children. I have
put the results into a chart below.

Question 5
0

Yes
No
Slightly

For this question, 8 people answered yes and 2 said slightly. As eight people answered
yes, from this I can see that many people think it is suitable for children. It is vital that my
animation is considered suitable for children as it is to be shown on a childrens TV channel.
which means it should not be rude or gory and should not be scary as the children may get
scared and their parents may not want them watching it.

Evaluate against requirements and constraints

After every product creation I had to evaluate it against the brief I was given. In unit 78 I
had to create graphics to advertise a game. Below I will place screenshots of my evaluation
for that assignment.
Discussions with client
In any project given to me by a client I will always have a meeting with the client in which
they will tell me exactly what they want me to create and what must be included and left
out. In both unit 32 and 78 I had a client meeting and had to write down what was talked
about in that meeting within my proposal. Below I will paste both client requirement
sections of my proposals.

Client Needs (78)

I have joined a team at Rockstar Games and my first task is to provide my ideas for the
sprite graphics, concept art and the game packing for a new game.

Client Needs (32)

A new digital channel, The Grid, is due to be launched next year. They have identified their
target audience as 18 to 30 year olds and are aiming to broadcast a mix of music videos,
imported American sitcoms and youth orientated chat shows.

They need me to originate and plan a TV ident for the channel sand in the next assignment
I will produce it.

Pre-production phases
When in pre-production on a product I must plan and design whatever it is that I am going
to be creating. There are many different methods to help plan and design a product like a
brainstorm/mindmap, storyboards, and dope sheets. In 78 I used most of these methods in
the planning of my game graphics

below I will show

evidence of my moodboard, mindmap and storyboards.

Production phases
When in the production stage of making a product you will start to actually create this
product. Whilst creating a product I must keep a diary stating every single step I took to be
able to create my product. Below I will place my diary for unit 32 assignment 4, the creation
of my TV ident.

Diary

Aim:
Collect all of my assets.
Evidence:

As I already have collected the links for each clip I will be using
all I need to do is go onto a YouTube video downloader and copy
and paste each link. The downloader I went onto was
http://www.clipconverter.cc/. I went onto my Proposal from
assignment 3 and copy and pasted the link for The Goldbergs
clip into the URL bar on the website and clicked Continue,
once loaded,
the next
page comes up with the
button to download the clip and what video quality you
want to save it in. I chose the highest quality as I want my
advert to look the best it can. I repeated this for
each of my clips that I wanted to download.

Learnt:

I downloaded all of my video clips.

Aim:
Create my logo.

Evidence:

To create my logo I will be using Photoshop.

Firstly, I opened Photoshop and set the
size of my canvas to 10X15
centimeters with a transparent background. The text was the first part of my logo
I created, to do this I used that shape tool. To create my text over the
background I used the curved rectangle tool to create a rectangle in the middle of my page
which I will cut the letter out of. I used the eraser tool to start making my letters and
erased the shape of my letters.
Post-production phases
After the creation of a product you must gain peer
feedback and evaluate your product. In unit 78 I
had to evaluate how I thought my game graphics turned out. Below I will place evidence of
my evaluation for unit 78 assignment 4.

Evaluation
Compared to my original intentions I feel like each one of my graphics turned out very well
as they looked almost identical to my original designs if not better than the originals. My 2
favourite graphics were my character and my game cover, this is because I feel they both
look very professional and the game cover looks like a cover that will be used for a real
game as it includes everything that a normal game cover has like the age rating and
liability information on the back. My background graphic is probably my least favourite as
it was very rushed because I spent too much time on other graphics. The background
graphic is in a lot less detail than my other graphics therefore it is my least favourite. I
think all 4 of my graphics have a great fit for purpose especially my game cover and A3
poster as they both include all of the information that a real life game cover and
advertisement poster would include and therefore they both fit the purpose of selling and
advertising a game. To create all of my graphics I used Photoshop, this allowed me to use
many different tools to create my graphics and make them in very good quality and detail.
Using Photoshops different tools helped me to gain even more skills and knowledge of how
to use Photoshop effectively than what I already knew. I feel all of my graphics had a good
aesthetic quality but my background graphic had a lower quality than my other 3 as it was
very rushed and didnt look as polished as them.
I came up with the idea of Assassins Creed Empire as I have played all of the released
Assassins Creed game within the series and I thought that I could make a good design for a
character based off of an assassin. I set it in Egypt as it is a place Assassins Creed hasnt
been yet and I felt it could give me a good basis for a background design. To make my
graphics I had planned to use Photoshop as it is great for creating graphics and has lots of
different tools I can use to create them, after creating them I would then export them into a
PNG as a Photoshop file isnt very easy to view on different computers. To make sure I met
all of my deadlines I created and followed an ILP which stated what tasks needed to be
completed and when they needed to be completed by. This helped my meet deadlines as it
was easy to follow. I used many tools in Photoshop to help create these graphics, the tools
allowed me to learn more about Photoshop and how to use it. This unit was completed on
my own and no teamwork took place.

In conclusion I feel this unit assignment went well as I finished all of my work but I was not
impressed with the standard of my background graphic.

Monitor Progress
Within any unit I must complete an ILP so that I can keep track and monitor my progress
throughout the tasks given, below I will place evidence of my ILPs from both unit 78 and 32.

Reviews
After the creation of a product you must gain peer feedback and evaluate your product. In
unit 32 I had to evaluate how I thought my TV ident turned out. Below I will place evidence
of my evaluation for unit 32.
