Mindmap of ideas for your installation

Create a mindmap showing ideas of how you might install your video.
Define what type(s) of visuals you will use.
(Eg. video cameras, still cameras, hand crafted artwork, film, animation, digital technologies)

Another idea I had was to have my TV

put up on the wall with a tacky neon
sign beside it saying Summer Vibes
with a pam tree, flickering on and off. I
think this works with my dark gritty
theme with my music video.

Another idea I had is to have the tv One idea is to go with the summer

other half is dark with the paint
chipped. I think this works with my
music video as it has a setting in a
summer place and a setting in a post
Another idea I had is to have my music video

themes present in my music video.
be a projector projecting different images to the
wall around the TV. The textures it projects will
match to what is being shown in the music video.
An example of this could be when in the water
scenes it will project a water texture on the wall.

Past and current video installation practice

From your research into video installation, give two examples that you think influence your work / ideas in some
way.

One should be a past practitioner, the other should be contemporary.

Contemporary Practitioner

Name: Bill Viola

Biography Recognized as one of todays leading artists. Born in 1951, Viola
has been creating video installations for over 40 years. His
installations are described as total environments that emvelop
the viewer in image and sound. His work has been shown around
the world in museums and galleries. Viola received a BFA in
Experimental Studios from Syracuse University in 1973 where he
studied visual art. Viola has received numerous awards for his
achievements, including the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in
1989, XX1 Catalonia International Prize in 2009, and the Praemium
Imperiale from the Japan Art Association in 2011.

Notes on their installation
A lot of his installation look at the idea of conciousnessm his
installations work quite a lot with light and have quite ghostly
qualities.
A lot of his work uses projectors and experiements with how it can
be manipulated through different materails such as cloth.
Minimalistic look not crowded space

How is it similar to your ideas? His installaions are similar to my ideas as they are minimalistic and
not crowded which is what I would loike to do with my ideas.
Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet
Furthermore, his work with projectors on blank walls is something
I would like to do for one of my ideas.

Past Practitioner

Name: Nam June Paik

Biography Born in 1932, known internationally as the Father of Video Art
created a large body of work which included things such as
sculptures, installations, performances, videotapes and television
productions. He was born in Seoul, Korea. In 1956 he graduated
from the University of Tokyo and then traveled to Germany to
pursue his interest in avant-grade music, composition and
performance. In 1963 he had his legendary one-artist exhibition at
the Galerie Parnass in Wuppertal, Germany, that feautured his
prepared television sets which radically changed the look and
content of television. In 1965 he was one of the first artists to use
a video camcorder. Paik has been the subject of num

Notes on their installation Very bold, big and impactful. Has a lot of elements together, using
screens to create large and eye catching scuptures.

How is it similar to your ideas?
For some of my ideas I would like to create quite a bright and eye
catching installation, this is something very aparent in Paik works.

Installation / set sketches

Draw a series of thumbnail sketches showing ideas for your installation. Add labels to your diagrams to identify
equipment, where the image will be seen, where the audience will stand etc.

Sound design

What sound will your FMP / Productions have?

The sound it will have is the sound from the social action videos playing through speakers. We will also have
some abient sounds inbetween videos and sound effects for when the social action changes. The sound effects
will give the viewer a verbal understanding that video is changing which will stop confusion.

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?

We will be using headphones. This is because listening is very important in understanding what the social action
videos are about. Futhermore, there will be lots of installations going on at the same time so in order to hear it
clearly we will need to use headphones. Headphones will also create a more imperssive experience heling the
viewer to separate from the world around them and focus more on the videos being played which is important
to understand what the social action videos are about.

Lighting design

What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety.
We will have lighting from the projector and lighting from police siren lights. Other then this there will be no
other light sources. This is to draw attention to the projected videos as it will be one of the only light soruces.
This will make it have a more impactful presence and make it more likely for people to focus on it which is
important in understanding the videos.

Sketch out your lighting plans for the installation.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet
Projection vs screen

Will you project your video or play it on a screen?

It will be projected

Why? If you are using a screen, will you
I think the effect of a projector is more use a single screen, or multiple
interesting and having the light rays screens?
from the projector I think will help make
it a more atmspheric experience for the
viewer and goes well with the rest of the
exibit. I say this because it is quite a
gritty design with the police tape and
lights it works well with the video to

merge with the wall to show the videos

in quite a gritty way that matches the
rest of the exibit.

If you are projecting what will How will that change how your
you project ONTO? (ie fabric, audience READS your animation?
screen, materials etc)
We are projecting onto a white board. I think it will make it more gritty,
This is because we want the video to be making the social action videos
seen clearly and a white board will allow more dramatic and impactful on
us to prject clearly onto it. the viewer. Also it makes the
videos more serious as it is
shown in a gritty serious way.
Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet
Technological convergence

What is technological convergence?

Technological convergence is the tendency that as technology changes, different technological system
sometimes evolve towards performing similar tasks

Will you be using this in your installation?

Fortunatley as we are doing social action there will be no need for technological convergence.

Explain your answer.

The video will be the only thing that we will actually be showing on a screen, any other inormation will be
printed out so the audience can read or look through it

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet
How have the following influenced your ideas?

work of the artists you have researched The contempoary artists that we have
researched have inspired us to use a
large space, with a lot of empty space
this is so we can draw focus onto the
specific thing and not confuse the
audince.

venue and facilites We visited the art gallery where we will
be doing our video installation the facility
has influeced us to obtain the largest part
of the gallery so we can have an open
space and draw our audience to focus on
our projection screen, the facility its self is
very open and full of space so is perfect
for our video installation.

lighting The facility is full of natural lightnining
there are a lot of windows to light up the
entire room. However if we encounter a
problem in having too much light, which
will then make our projection not very
visible we will need to have a concigency
plan to black out the windows, and make
the room a little darker.

screens / projectors The projectors have influenced us to do
the same in our installation as it can draw
in a lot of people in because there is a lot
more freedorn and a large focus area.

speakers / headphones We decided to use headphones because
we found out that we are trying to send a
message and help people understand the
social actions. We want to reach out to
the people and make them aware and
using headpgones means that they can
focus on the projection and listen without
any distractions.

Copyright issues

What potential copyright issues could your FMP infringe?

Since we are using other peoples social action videos we are going to need to get permission from the orginal
creators to use their work. Also we need to make sure the social actions we use dont infringe any copyright
themselves otherwise we cant use them.

How can you be certain that your work does not violate any copyright infringements?

The best way is to get all the nessercary permissions from people and cross reference it with copyright laws to
see if you are within the law.
