VVM - National Camp- May 2017

Preamble:

Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan (VVM) reached to its third and final stage. All the participants
have successfully crossed first two rounds and have demonstrated their excellence over
the others. The organizing team congratulate all the successful candidates for their
success.

The aim of this national camp is not only to test their bookish knowledge again but to
see and develop their other dimensions of talent. In the national camp students will be
given opportunity to showcase their talent under the following Groups of activities

Group A: Indian contribution to Science: under this activity students are expected to
demonstrate their presentation skill on Indian Scientist or his/her signature work.

Group B: Scientific Understanding: Activities under this group is designed to judge the
puzzles solving skills and toy based problem solving skills. Scientific understanding,
analytical approach, clarity in thinking and quickness will be the main focus of this
group.

Group C: Innovation and Creativity: Mainly two activities will be part of the group.
Students will be given on-the-spot to make out something in unconventional way. Also,
students will be asked to write scientific story small note on some principles or letter to
your favorite scientist explaining how you liked his/her work.

Group D: Out of Box: It is one of its own kind of activity. Some scientific film of 15-20
min duration will be screened and some question are there based on that. Also, there
may be some game or MCQs based on current science. In this group our emphasis is to
judge the leadership quality of student.

Each class will have different evaluation tools for above activities. Students are advised
to read the instruction carefully for their corresponding class.

It should be noted that evaluation of student is based on their individual performance.


Students will be awarded some mark in each activity. However, there will be some
relative weightage between all the groups. This relative percentage of different groups
will be finalized only during the final competition.
Group A: Indian Contributions to Science

Presentation on Indian Contribution to Science Guidelines for presenter

(For class 8: Role Play)

General instructions for preparation and presentation on Indian contribution to science,


in the form of Role Play

1. Select any Indian scientist of your choice.


2. Each participant will perform role play on the basis of life sketch of the selected Indian
scientist.
3. Five minutes are for presentation and additional two minutes are for question answer.
4. Participants can use written script. Suitable arrangement will be available.
5. It is not mandatory to use costumes. Also, there is no mark for the costumes.
6. Participant may use some experiment related to role play.
7. Speech should be clear with appropriate volume and inflection.
8. The Role play should be organized in logical sequence.
9. Provide handout/ abstract/short write up of about 60 to 80 words to the evaluator.
10. Assessment will be mainly based on following points:
a. Clarity of speech, volume and inflection.
b. Appropriateness of arguments and viewpoints.
c. Convincing capacity and its consistency, planning and adaptability.
d. Preparation, organization and quality of material delivered.
e. Capturing and maintaining audience interest.
11. Medium of instruction and presentation will be English only.

Group B: Scientific Understanding

(For class 8th)

Scientific understanding, analytical approach, clarity in thinking and quickness will be judged in
the following two tests.

Test 1: Solving puzzles (Total time: 30 minutes, Total Marks: 30)

General instructions:

1. Each student will be given some questions based on Puzzles/Conundrum/Riddle.


2. Answers should be written on question paper itself in the space provided and the same is to
be submitted to the examiner. For each question certain marks will be allotted as mentioned
in the question paper.
3. Follow instructions given by the examiners/written on question paper.
4. NO negative marking for any questions.

Test 2: Toy based question solving (Total time: 50 minutes, Total Marks: 30)

General Instructions

1. Each student will be given 5 questions based on toys (or some set up) which will be
displayed in examination room.
2. Follow the instructions given by the examiners/written on question paper.
3. NO negative marking.
Group C: Innovation and Creativity

(For ALL classes)

Activity 1: Innovation (Total time: 30 minutes, Total Marks: 25)

An art based activity to assess creative expression and innovative imagination.


General Instruction:
1. It is an individual activity, about shapes and their assembling.
2. Activity is designed to assess fluidity in the process of solution seeking.
3. Students will be given 30 minutes time to complete the activity.
4. Activity and required material will be given on-the-spot.
5. The evaluation will be based on various parameters of lateral thinking.
6. Medium of instruction will be English only.

Activity 2: Creative writing (Total time: 30 minutes, Total Marks: 30)

Writing skill on a given topic will be checked by this activity.

General Instruction:
1. It is an individual activity.
2. Activity is designed to judge the writing skills of the students.
3. Students will be given 30 minutes time to write his/her thoughts.
4. Topics will be given on-the-spot.
5. Medium of instruction and presentation will be English or Hindi only.
6. The creative writing for different class will be as follows:

Part A: Scientific Film

General instructions for scientific film

Observation and Analysis (Total duration: 30 minutes, Total Marks: 10)

1. Language of film will be English or English subtitled.


2. Medium of instructions will be English
3. 15 to 20 minutes duration scientific film/clip/documentary will be shown.
4. 10 minutes written exam based on the documentary will be conducted.

Part B: Leadership quality

General instructions for Leadership quality:

Leadership and Team spirit evaluation (Total duration: 90 minutes, Total Marks: 40)

1. Written exam with multiple choices to answer


2. An activity in a group of students will be conducted
3. Medium of instructions will be English
4. This will be group activity may be group of 5, 10 or 25 students.
5. Few activities will be there to judge the leadership quality.
6. The mode and evaluation criteria will be given during the examination hall.
7. Total time for this activity is 60 minutes.
8. Medium of instruction and presentation will be English or Hindi only.
