Election of 1824: The United States'
unusual presidential election of 1824.
The four candidates--Henry Clay,
William Crawford, Andrew Jackson,
John Quincy Adams. However, no
candidate received a majority of
electoral votes instead, there was a
selection of a president by the House of
Representatives; Why Adams was the
choice even after losing the popular vote
to Jackson
1964: The Twelfth Amendment was passed
and required the House of Representatives to
immediately go into session to vote for a
president if no candidate for president receives
a majority of the electoral votes since along
with the 270 of the 538 electoral votes style that
we know of today
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
Clinton won the popular vote, however
due to the divisiveness of the election
she ended up losing the Electoral
college and then the presidency. With
two of this oddities within five election
cycles, the result gave rise to a
resurgence of mass opposition to the old
election methods and the rise of distaste
with the system

congress to reform the
voting system and create
the Electoral College. With
this, several amendments
were set in place and
made sure that such an
incident could never
happen again
Elections of 1876 and 1888: Some of
the first cases between two major party
candidates where the winner of the popular
vote lost the presidency due to the electoral
College sparking major outcry across Capitol
Hill.
2000: The hotly contested 2000 election of
Republican George W. Bush under these age-old
anomalies rejuvenated a long-simmering debate over
whether the Electoral College represents an outdated
and undemocratic method of choosing a president or a
critical safeguard against ineffective governance by a
plurality leader.
