Cadets participate in Field Day Challenge

by Cadet Kristina Martinez

Air Force JROTC cadets participated in the first annual Field Day at
Lakeside High School on April 14th, 2017. At this event, all pitched in
to help set up each area, as many volunteers joined us. The day started
out with a mass formation, followed by the field games of Soccer,
Flickerball, and Kickball.

As the day progressed, the schedule changed more than once due to
confusion, but Command Staff worked extra hard to make sure
everything turned out alright . All cadets cheered on their teammates
during track events, before moving on to game stations.

After morning games, cadets enjoyed lunch and free time to socialize. MSgt Parker worked hard
to provide all cadets with a meal of burgers, chips, and a soda. Many seemed to enjoy the
concessions being offered as well, including yummy candy, popcorn, and snow cones!
According to the cadets, the most enjoyable aspects of the day was Tug-Of-War, and the Water
Balloon Fight, where everyone enjoyed dumping a giant tub of ice on our new Unit Commander:
c/Col Torres.

A special thanks to the Marine and Army recruiters for their help. Cadets interested in receiving
more information about these armed services may use the contact information listed below.

First annual Awards Ceremony

by Cadet Kristina Martinez

Lakeside JROTC hosted its first annual Awards Ceremony on April 28th, 2017 in the Auditorium.
Although the date moved due to some scheduling conflicts, there was an outstanding turn-out
and many heart-warming moments.

During Awards Night many cadets were recognized for their amazing achievements in
Aerospace Science throughout the 2016-2017 school year. Awarded ribbons included Longevity,
Dress and Appearance, Attendance, and Good Conduct. Harder to receive ribbons included the
Special Teams, Leadership, and Superior Performance ribbon. Those who received ribbons
previously were given a Single Oak Leaf Cluster, an honor and a privilege to achieve.

Cadet Captain Jason Rigo led his team in

the performance of a risky rifle exhibition
that seemed to pay off, with all lives
intact. The performance certainly made
hearts beat as a rifle flew off the stage and
into the crowd. Luckily, everything went
well and ended on time.

Other special events included: Delta

Flight receiving the Outstanding Flight
Ribbon and certainly worked hard to earn
it. Eight Lucky Individual Cadets received
National Medals including: the Air Commando Award by C/Rigo, Jason, the Daedaelian Award

Outgoing Commander bids farewell
The Units Former Group Commander, C/Colonel Linda

Washington, participated in her last change of command ceremony

at Lakeside High School on Awards Night (April 28th,2017). For her

hard work and selfless dedication to the unit--she was chosen as the

2017 Cadet of the Year! She made a speech that really touched us all.

In her Final Words, she says, Im really going to miss you C/Caleb

Torres you were the best Deputy Unit Commander I could ask for. If it wasnt for Torres my

day would be bad. If Im sad he is sad. If Im happy he is happy and I just cant thank you

enough. I will truly miss you all and I thank you. All Cadets know she will always have a

special place in our hearts and we will always remember her by her famous words, If you mess

up you get FIVE DEMERITS!

Incoming Commander excited to lead

After the Change of Command occurred, the Unit accepted a new

Group Commander; C/Colonel Caleb Torres. GA-951 is ready to see

the promising aspects he will bring to the unit, as he stated in his

speech I am looking forward to serving in the role of Unit

Commander for the upcoming school year and also to all the

memories the 2017-2018 school year will offer. Many changes are

truly happening, as we were all touched with his final words towards

our former group commander, C/Col Linda Washington. In his speech he says, Probably my

biggest help through my time as Deputy Unit Commander has been Cadet Washington. There

is so much to say about her. I dont even know where to start She is probably one of the

kindest and most helpful people I know and I am proud to not only call her my boss, but also

my friend.

Cadets make college visit
by MSgt Parker

More than a dozen JROTC group staff and co-curricular team members were recently rewarded
with a trip to Dossier Paintball.
Before an afternoon of combat, the
group made a stop at Georgia
Tech for a campus visit, provided
by the universitys Air Force
ROTC detachment. The campus
tour started with a visit to the
ROTC unit, where cadets learned
about the units purpose,
scholarship opportunities,
command structure, cadet
schedule of events, and future
career aspirations. Before leaving
for paintball, the cadets enjoyed some free time to bond and enjoy lunch near the campus.
Lakeside JROTC support fundraiser to help others
by Cadet Iloane Bastos

Congratulations to GA-951 for successfully accomplishing a

recent fundraiser. Throughout the month of March each flight
participated in the Mind over Matter fundraiser by collecting
funds for Alzheimer's disease research. We raised a total of
$123.59. The winning flight was none other than Delta flight
with a whopping $60.45. A special thanks also to the units
Kitty Hawk Association Commander Cadet 1st Lt Kristina
Martinez for her efforts in raising awareness of the fundraiser.
Each flight deserves a thank you for getting such a great cause,
because providing your contributions. A special thank you also
goes to Lt Col Reyes and MSgt Parker for permitting the unit to
execute the fundraiser. The money was delivered to a senior
home where Alzheimer's is extremely common and the
gratitude on their faces were beyond priceless. Thank you so
much for being such an amazing unit! Together we can change
the world if we so choose to.

Lakeside cadets participated in an amazing event on Saturday, April 29th, 2017. Civil Air Patrol is a non-
profit organization that helps many pursue their true passions and shape many young individuals for
flying air craft. The flight was 45 minutes long, and many cadets had the chance to maneuver the aircraft,
flying at an altitude of around 3,000 feet. The beautiful landscape included Stone Mountain, and Lake
Lanier.
