Modernity is the era of culture and economic development and civilization. It is

the stage wherein changes are made for the beneficial of mankind. It could either be a
human races step to destruction or success.
Looking on the bright side of this modification, people got exposed to the world of
click and tap which led to their smooth sailing journey of survival. Today, regardless of
the distance of our loved ones from us, we could communicate with them in just a click.
In the field of medicine, cures to various deadly diseases have been discovered.
Modernity does not only refer to technology but it also encompasses the changes in
the culture, beliefs, values, and others. When it comes to religious beliefs, in todays
era, secularization is being manifested; thus, resulting to the freedom of everyone to
worship whoever or whatever they believe in.
Despite these advantages offered by modernity, there are many things
concerning its downside. Living their life comfortably with the use of modern
constituents, peoples mind set was stuck to the ideology that they would not survive
without the use of these products of evolution. Moreover, in the present time, liberation
caused people to lose their religious beliefs. Also, since you can do most things with just
sitting and maneuvering a gadget, people became sluggish and they tend to neglect
their needs as a mortal to do physical works. Courtship nowadays are being done in
social networking sites. The real essence of courting someone is disappearing so
people have the tendency to be in a relationship with someone who they do not really
know too well, and eventually will break up after a short period of time.
In contrast with modernity, traditionalism is the conservative period. It is mainly
associated with spirituality and morality. Aside from this, it is also the phase of giving
high importance in cultures and traditions.
Traveling back, people used to be united with their faith and individualization was
not present. Filipinos used to worship only one God, strictly sticking to the religious
values that they must manifest. Also, as a sign of respect, Filipinos used to practice
pagmamano or the act of touching the hand of the elder to ones forehead. They also
used the words po and opo when talking to an elder to show that he/she regards that
person with politeness and respect. Dating back to the Spanish Era, men shows high
respect to women and they are careful of their actions to not seem aggressive in
courting them. Even on the simplest detail, men do not simply hold the hand of a lady
unless they are in a relationship. Women highly valued their spirituality and they see
their body as the temple of the Holy Spirit. In the field of medicine, people adhere on the
use of herbal or natural medicines to cure diseases which does not destroy the kidney
unlike taking up modern medications.
Meanwhile, being traditional also imposes disadvantages on every individuals. It
shows that we are not compatible to adapt to changes that could be made in the future.
Not everything could be solved naturally. As evidence, herbal medicines could not cure
any kinds of diseases. Sometimes, we need to liberate ourselves with critical and
scientific development.
In some cases, I consider myself to be traditional and modern. Me as someone
traditional, to show respect to my parents, I never forget to mano to them whenever I
get home from school. Instead of drinking medicines, it became a practice in our family
to drink fresh juices of fruits, specifically, calamansi and orange. On how I view things in
the domain of romantic ties, I prefer someone who would court me by getting the
permission of my parents first, unlike how men court ladies today in a blunt manner.
Also, I see premarital sex as an immoral act because I am strict in following the values
in my religion as a Christian. Usually, I give explanations to some phenomenon through
the context of Christianity. Other than these, I prefer to read through printed books over
e-books because for me, studying is much easier without the use of gadgets that could
cause distraction.
On the contrary, since changes have been taking place and we must learn to
adapt in order to survive on a daily basis, I tend to perform the practices held in
modernization. Take the case of the music that I listen to. Teenagers like me prefer to
listen to songs made by the artists today instead of the 80s and 90s music. So as to
communicate with someone, I usually use my cellphone or my laptop. Also, with the use
of these gadgets, I have something to entertain myself during my dull days. In the field
of education, searching for stuffs has become much favorable for everyone. Students
like me who is not really fond of taking down notes has seen expedience in the
development of PowerPoint which professors posts online. Moreover, I normally ride
jeeps to go to a certain place instead of just walking which would cause exhaustion.
In my own perspective, there should be an existing equilibrium between
modernization and traditionalism. Some aspects of traditionalism should be preserved
and some aspects of modernization should be observed. Especially, Christianity is a
necessity to the living principle of a human. We must see our physicality and spirituality
as a sacred gift from God, depriving others to be given the chance to disrespect us. One
must not forget to look back on history because we would not be what we are right now
if it wasnt for what happened in the past. Right now, people live the way they want, only
to satisfy their personal needs. We must be values oriented as we face obstacles in our
existence. On the other hand, there should also be an employment of modernization in
our being as we work to accomplish success. Humans development of devices opened
the door of discovery of science. To eradicate world issues today, scientists must
continue to search for a solution. The current form of communication through
technology should also be practiced for it provides propitiousness to human race.
Likewise, transportation through vehicles must also be carried out to arrive in a certain
location through a brisk manner. I strongly adhere to this equality to take place for I
believe that this would help in shaping a globe of success and magnificence.
