LAB INTRODUCTION

Osmosis is one of the word that can be heard commonly in high school students. Osmosis
is one of the method of passive transport which is related to water. A biology teaching website
stated that This is a water specific process. Usually, cells are in an environment where there is
one concentration of ions outside and one inside. ( Passive transport - Taking the easy road.)
Osmosis occurs everywhere. Some examples would be: plants root absorbing water from the
soil into the itself, pruned fingers after swimming for a while etc. In order for the process to
occur, You just need three ingredients for osmosis to happen: a semipermeable membrane with
two solvents of different concentrations on either side. (Gemma, 7 Examples Of Osmosis In
Everyday Life).

In this upcoming lab, we are going to perform an experiment on Osmosis in cells by

leaving jellies and potato inside a water filled and salt concentrated solution filled beakers. We
use jellies and potatoes to represent cells and water/salt concentrated solution to represent
environment. The lab will show how water will affect cells through osmosis process by
simulating jellies and potatoes in different types of environment. In the end of the lab, the result
would show us ideas of how would the cell be like after being in a certain environment.
