CEC Quarterly Assessment & data form

Name: _Ella Rushing__________________Quarter:______Fall 2016____________________

1. At which Community Engagement Corps school partner site did you serve?
Denver Green School

2. Who is you current supervisor at your placement site?

Frank Coyne

3. Please briefly describe the activities and responsibilities that you have engaged in
at your school partner site.
On Mondays, I help in Mr. Meyers 4th grade math class. I primarily help four kids in the class who
are behind with their math skills, but I also go around the room to check on all the kids to make
sure they are understanding the material thats being taught. At the end of the day, I always
meet with Mr. Meyer. On Tuesdays, I help two kids in particular in Ms. Martinezs reading and
writing class. I then go to Ms. Weymouths class and help one kid in particular with during EFS.
Again, I usually check up on a lot of the kids throughout the class. On Tuesdays I also often help
Ms. Weymouth with grading and organizing.

4. How many students have you served this quarter as a Community Engagement
Corps member?
My help primarily serves about seven kids in fourth and fifth grade, but overall I have
helped probably forty kids at one point or another.

5. Approximately how many hours have you spent working at your site placement
each week?
I work about ten hours per week.

6. Please briefly describe any challenges that you have faced during your placement
as a Community Engagement Corps member.
Some challenges that I have faced as a CEC member is trying to work with defiant kids who act
like they dont want help, but it usually gets easier as I spend more time with them and develop
a relationship with them. Additionally, Im helping a kid with reading that has dyslexia. This has
been challenging but also a very interesting and this kid is great and appreciates the help.

7. Please describe any additional support, training, and/or material that you believe
would be useful to you and/or other Community Engagement Corps members.
For me personally, I would like some training in how to approach helping the kid with dyslexia
with his reading. I help him sound out words while reading, but I feel as though there are better
ways to approach helping him. Because of this, Im going to talk with the administration at
Denver Green School to see if there are techniques and methods that I can use to help him more.

8. Please describe any highlights that stick out from your service as a Community
Engagement Corps member this quarter.
One highlight has been working with a kid in the 4 th grade class. His name is Abduraman, and he
is from the Sudan and moved here recently. He doesnt speak a whole lot of English, but he is
one of the hardest working kids Ive engaged with. Additionally, I can see how much he loves
learning and he has a great sense of humor; it is a joy to work with him. I have also enjoyed
seeing the progress that a kid has made that I help in the 4 th grade math class. Every Monday I
can tell that he is becoming more confident in his math skills, which is amazing to see.

9. Briefly describe your experience as a Tutor/Mentor this quarter. What did you learn
about service? What did you learn about yourself? What are you most proud of
from this past quarter?
Ive really enjoyed my experience as a tutor and mentor this quarter. Ive enjoyed working with
kids to help them academically in addition to building relationships with them. I have learned
that its very hard to be an elementary school teacher where there are lots of kids in the class.
Because the teacher has to cater to the majority of the students, the kids who are behind
academically just keep falling behind unless they get help. Ive continued to learn that I loved
working with kids, but also that its really difficult when kids dont want help even thought they
need it. I am most proud of the work Ive done with Abduraman because of how much English
hes been learning, how his math skills have improved, and overall that hes happy and enjoying
himself at school.
