PART I: Content

Struggling, proficient, or mastered?

The ability to interpret slope and changes in slope, both positive and negative.
Mastered
Examples:
- In the Long Walk Home problem, we had to create a crazy walk home for the person.
We had to include the factors of him going up a hill, being chased by a dingo, stopping, and
turning around. For each of these different lines, we had to find the slope and present it as
piecewise functions.

-
- In Practice 3, problem 1, we had to find the slope, as part of finding the equation, using
just the line given.

- Again in Practice 3, problem 6, you must find the slope, as part of the equation, using just
the line given.

The ability to determine a linear equation to fit points.

Mastered
Examples: (all in Practice 3)
- Problem 2, you have to use the slope and a point to find the equation. I found this by
graphing it and finding the y-intercept.

- Problem 3, you have to use the slope and a point to find the equation. I found this by
graphing it and finding the y-intercept.

- Problem 4, you have to use two points to find the equation of the line. I found this by
y 2 y 1 3+2 1
using the equation y= . I did y= , which is y= . And then I a
x 2x 1 30 3
point and used the slope to find the y-intercept.

The ability to write and solve algebraic expressions for contextual linear situations.
Mastered
- Problem 3 of Exploration 2, youre asked to write an expression that represents the
distance that the rabbit covered. If the rabbit is running 22 fps, and y is going to equal how far it
has gone is the amount of time, x would equal time. So the equation would be y=22 x .

- In Exploration 4, problem 5, you have to reorder the equation from y= x+3.6 to
5
Ax + Bx=C . Shown below is my process of reordering. I got the equation of
2
3.6= x+ y .
5
-

- In Exploration 3, problem 4, part 3, you are told to represent the tire pressure as she
6
pumps, as an equation. I figured out that the slope is =1.2 and the y-intercept is 7. So the
5
6
equation is y= x +7 .
5

The ability to use strategies of algebra to solve linear, reciprocal, and absolute value
equations.
Mastered
Examples:
- In Exploration 4, problem 1, we had to find the x-intercept and the y-intercept on the line,
using the linear equation. You plug in 0 into y to find x. And once you have x, you can solve for y.
This also works the other way around.

- In Exploration 5, problem 5, we had to find all the solutions to |3 x4|=6 . You have
to create two equations to get rid of the absolute value. So I created and solved for 3 x4=6
and 3 x4=6 . I then got the answers x=3.33 and x=6.66 .

- I could not find a problem through the worksheets I had that used reciprocals, so Ill just
3 4
give you an example. The reciprocal of is . Its that simple. Multiplying by the
4 3
reciprocal always equals 1.

The ability to identify transformations of a graph from an equation and vice versa.
Mastered
Examples:
- On Transforming Functions Workshop, part I (at the bottom of the picture), it asks you to
graph g( x)=2[f ( x )] . You already know the f (x) equation and (x,y) points. The 2 in the
equation is going to make g(x) a smaller function than f (x) . The smaller the number, the
wider the graphed function.

- In part II, it asks you to find the points of j (x ) . The equation of f (x) is
f ( x)= . So that means g( x)= , because it says that g(x) is the same shape,
just shifted down 3 units.

- Again on part II, where we start talking about d ( x) , it asks you to fill out the table
and sketch the graph. The equation d ( x) is just like f (x) , but it has added 4, so on the
graph it has gone left 4 units. The equation would be d ( x)= .

The ability to use inequalities to represent intervals, domains, and ranges.

Proficient
Examples:
- I used inequalities in my piecewise functions from the Long Walk Home problem. We
used the inequalities to decide (using the x-values) when the line starts and stops.

-
- I also used inequalities in Exploration 5, problem 1, where I learned (working with my
group) that you have to switch the inequality sign around when performing an operation by a
negative number.

NOTE: I am still unclear what domain, range, and intervals are!! I know what inequalities are and how to
solve them. But I still need some help.

PART II: Habits

Habits I embody well:

- Reflecting and synthesizing:

I think that I am good at reflecting on my answer and clearly summarizing my process. During
my process, I can learn new rules (that are later confirmed in class) and apply it to other problems.
- Recognizing and resolving errors:
When I recognize my error (which usually happens during group work), I can observe what my
peers did for the problem, and redo the problem with the corrected error.

Habit I would like to work on:

- Generating ideas:
When I often attempt problems, I get set on a certain idea of how to approach the problem, and I block
out any other ideas that could get me to the answer quicker and/or give me the real answer.

PART III: Grade

A, 95%
I think that I deserve a 95% because I have been invested in my work and have paid attention/stayed on
task during class. I dont think Ive earned a full 100% though, because I think I could have worked
harder to complete problems, particularly on Explorations.
