Summary of the Event (at least 3 major points; each point will have its own paragraph)
A. North Korea had originally threatened the United States on New Years Day that they
would be firing an intercontinental ballistic missile. It was at that time that Donald Trump
was the president elect, who presumably, responded in an unexpected way. He claimed
he would not let it happen, but six weeks after North Korea had threatened the US, they
did in fact fire a missile. Although it didnt reach the United States, Trump still released a
statement, that oddly enough did not mention North Korea.
B. Trump responded to the missile launch with the address that instead of actually
addressing what had just occurred, he let it be known that there was American support for
Tokyo. An Asian scholar at the Brooking Institution who served as Obamas Asia adviser
assumed that it was the lack of strategy that kept Trump from addressing the situation.
C. Seeing as that the relationship and policy between the US and other Asian countries are
unclear, it is said that to have a good policy with China is crucial to any part response to
North Korea, seeing as China has extensive economic and political connections. Trump
hopes to persuade Beijing into taking a more drastic action against North Korea, but it
still uncertain whether or not he will be able to pull it off.
Your Opinion of the Event (at least 3 sentences).
Personally, I think it was rather unexpected that he reacted the way he did. From my view
and what Ive seen him as so far, I thought he would have reacted in the complete
opposite way. I thought he wouldve responded in way that wouldve started a nuclear
war.
Relate your Event to a Historical Event (compare and contrast with current event).
This event relates to when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, since North Korea is now trying
to fire missiles to the United States. Although North Korea failed to hit the US, they
could be on their way onto reaching their goal of hitting the US. And although Japan flew
to the US in order to bomb the Pearl Harbor rather than fire a missile, I think its still
pretty much could come with the same outcome.
