Omega-3 + Weight Training Boosts Muscle Function in Older Women


A new study led by the Universities of Glasgow and Aberdeen published in the American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition determined that older women can improve their muscle function
and quality when combining resistance exercise training with omega-3 supplements. In the
study, the researchers randomly assigned 50 older men and women to either an omega-3
fish oil supplement (3 grams) or a 3 gram safflower oil placebo, then had them participate in
lower limb resistance training twice weekly for 18 weeks.
As anticipated, the resistance exercise training improved muscle size, function, and
quality in all study participants. But those women who were taking the fish oil had a
significant increase in their muscle function and quality, but not size, over those taking the
placebo. This difference was not noted in men. An additional finding was that the omega-3
supplementation reduced blood triglyceride levels in both men and women.
