Timeline Explanations

Jan.1, 1942 World War Two

According to Timetoast website World War Two was a time where many women

started entering the business game. Many men were overseas fighting for our country.

The men had families that were suffering because they had no incoming income. Also

businesses were struggling because they had no workers. This is when the women

stepped up and started working. This time in history is significant because employers

payed woman a smaller amount than the men doing the same work.

Jun.10,1963 Equal pay act of 1963

Signed into law by President John F. Kennedy on June 10th,1963 overcoming

opposition by business leaders and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It became illegal

to pay women lower rates for doing the same job as a man strictly because of their

sex(History1). Although this was important it didn't do much. Employers got around

laws easily and not much changed. This act did show the public that there was a

problem though.

workforce.

Jan. 1, 1980 Reduction in wage gap

This decade contained the most rapid rate of reduction in wage gap. The

median annual wage and salary earnings of full-time, full-year women who worked rose

from 60% of mens earnings in 1979 to 69% only a decade later. The speed of this

increased was faster than in the 1990s and 2000s.This was due to the increase in

women who achieved college degrees and obtaining professional degrees and women

entered higher paying fields(History 1). Women began taking action into their own

hands and fought for themselves to make equality happen.

Jan. 1, 1996 Equal pay day

Equal pay day was a day created by the National Committee of Pay Equity

(History1). This day was created to show awareness of the difference in men and

women's pay gap. It is a day to realize groups that have helped lessen the pay gap and

take part in making the problem known worldwide.

Jan. 29, 2009 Fair pay act

Delivered on Jan. 20th, 2015, Obama challenges the gender wage gap in his

speech: Of course, nothing helps families make ends meet like higher wages. That's

why this Congress still needs to pass a law that makes sure a woman is paid the same

as a man for doing the same work. Really. It's 2015. It's time.(History 1). This act is a

huge breaking point in the fight for equality. It will definitely help women and men that

are being affected by the pay gap.
