Standards: 3.OA.C.7- Operations & Algebraic Thinking


Multiply and divide within 100.

Objectives Students will learn that multiplication is a way of combining quantities of


: the same size. They will learn to do this by using the number 10 and will
solve 10 multiplication problems with 90% accuracy.

Materials: Popsicle sticks, blocks, buttons, multiplication flash cards, white boards,
dry erase markers

There will be 5 centers for students to practice multiplications of 10. They will do each
activity for 20 minutes.

Description Time

Activity 1: Students will practice counting by groups of 10 saying,
10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100. While the teacher writes the numbers on the board.
Next she will ask, how many 10s make a 20? The children will answer by saying, 2 tens. The
teacher will write a 2 on the other side of the 20. The students will do this process until they get
to 100.

Activity 2: Student will have popsicle sticks and will be asked to count 10 of them and rubber
band them together. They will see how many groups they can form out of the popsicle sticks.
Invite students to count how many groups of popsicle sticks and write the number of groups on
a piece of paper. Then have them write down the sign (X) for multiplication. After that have them
write 10 on the other side of the (X). Next they will write an (=) sign. Invite them to think how
many groups of 10 they have and then how many total popsicle sticks using their knowledge of
10 popsicle sticks in each group.

Activity 3: Students will use flashcards that has multiplication facts of 10 without answers and some
with answers. They will solve for the ones that that dont have answers. When they get a card that just
has an answer they will tell how many groups of 10 will get that number.

Activity 4: A teacher will read story problems to the students deal with factors of 10. Students
will use buttons to help them solve for those story problems. They will discuss with the teacher
what they did.

Activity 5: Students will give their classmates story problems that they made up. The other
students will use a whiteboard and find a way to solve the story problem.

Assessment: The assessment will be given in the 4th activity when the teacher read the
students story problems. There will be 10 story problems read to them and they will be expected
to get 9 out of the 10 correct.

Accommodations: Students who have a visual impairment will have the opportunity to use
manipulatives at all times to help figure out math problems and show what they have learned.

Differentiated Instruction: I could give word multiplication problems in braille to help my


student stay up with the class and also be able to working on her reading as well. I could make
a recording of different math problems to let the student use and she could listen to them. I
would let her use manipulatives to work on solving problems.

Closure: (5 Minutes): Have the students divided into four groups and have them work to create
their own story problem using the 10 multiplication. It must relate to the class and using all of the
students.
