Note: Commercial and trailer fees are determined by weight. The registered
gross weight is the vehicle weight plus the maximum intended weight
the registrant intends to carry at one time. It is up to the registrant to fix
the registered weight depending on intended use (and the capacity of the
vehicle as set by the manufacturer). It is a violation of law to operate a
vehicle beyond its registered gross weight.

Late Excise Tax Payments: If a registrant is delinquent on excise tax payments to his/her local city/town, he/she must pay the Registry a $20
fee in addition to the excise tax payment (to the city/town) in order to have the non-renew status removed from the registration.

Registration and/or Plate Cancellation Fee: The fee to cancel an individual plate is $25. There is no charge to cancel an entire registration.

enced in this brochure. Relevant changes will be posted on the RMVs website at www.
massrmv.com. If you do not have access to a computer, you may call the RMVs Phone
Center at 857-368-8000 (from the 339/617/781/857 MA area codes or from outside
of MA) or 800-858-3926 (from all other MA area codes) to determine a particular fee.
By law, the RMV is required to collect the fees for the transactions listed in this Chart. Most
fees are set (or amended) by regulation as issued by the Executive Office for Administra-
tion and Finance at 801 Code of Massachusetts Regulation (CMR) 4.02. Some fees are
set directly by statute, usually in Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 90, Section 33.
