Key Vocabulary from the Article (Define at least 4).

o Adamantly- Utterly unyielding in attitude or opinion in spite of all appeals, urgings, etc.
o Regime- A mode or system of rule or government
o Miniaturised- To make in extremely small size in order to keep volume or weight to a
minimum
o Kilotonnes- An explosive force equal to that of 1000 tons of TNT.

Summary of the Event (at least 3 major points; each point will have its own paragraph)

A. A meeting of the UN Security Council has taken place urgently because of North Koreas
recklessness, said by South Korea. Clarifying this, North Korea has tested two nuclear tests,
even if there was a UN ban. The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Uns rhetoric has been seen
to be more aggressive. Before the meeting took place, US ambassador Samantha Power said,
"North Korea is seeking to perfect its nuclear weapons and their delivery vehicles so they can
hold the region and the world hostage under threat of nuclear strike".

B. The test was made on National Day, participating in the holiday by often showing military
strength. Therefore, North Korea claimed that the test was made to further develop the
miniaturization of nuclear warheads so they could be mounted be ballistic missiles. Including the
The Norths statement of now producing at will, and as many as it wants, a variety of smaller,
lighter and diversified nuclear warheads of higher strike power. Recently, they have also
conducted a series of ballistic missile launches and has often stated its aim of hitting US targets.
C. The latest test was announced on state TV after a 5.3 magnitude tremor was detected
near the Punggye-ri underground nuclear site. Estimations of the explosive yield of the latest
blast have varied. South Koreas military announced that it was about 10 kilotonnes, enough to
make this North Koreas strongest nuclear test ever. Other experts initial indications suggest
20 kilotonnes or more. This can be compared to the bomb dropped by the US on Hiroshima in
1945 since it had yield of about 15 kilotonnes.

Your Opinion of the Event (at least 3 sentences).

My opinion on this event is that North Korea is also like a ticking bomb. Our actions are
what anger their leader, don't know why, but they do. The more we do and claim to do things
that the opposing enemy doesnt like, will cause him to explode and maybe actually target us
with his nuclear missiles. Its all a matter of time when North Korea will do their next test and
threaten one of our allies. Theyve kept quiet for a brief time, so to me, theres something
suspicious going on within North Korea.

Relate your Event to a Historical Event (compare and contrast with current event).

From the three main points, I mentioned the bombing of Hiroshima. The bombing which
killed at least 129,000 people, remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in history.
Comparing both of them, the meaning of the bombing in Hiroshima was done because Japan did not
want to surrender, therefore, the United States had to use the missile to both show its power and do
damage before The Soviet Union could enter the war and secure a stronger political position after
the war. As for North Korea, with this nuclear test, the power was shown. Thankfully the contrast is
that no damage has been made to our country or our allies.
