Lesson Aims:
To present a type of evaluation a project related to Hamlet
To learn more about Hamlet and his soliloquy
To practise speaking in English
To improve Ss confidence with language which is at first glance beyond them
To enjoy working with a Shakespearean text
To practise writing advice
Skills: speaking and reading
Materials: handouts from www.teachingenglish.org.uk, poster Shakespeare, Hamlet,

Possible drawbacks: - Ss may have some problems in understanding and adjusting to the
new type of language

Activity 1 (project presentation, speaking, evaluating)


Aims:
To introduce the topic of the lesson
To evaluate a project presentation
To prepare Ss for the reading activity
Procedure Interaction Timing
A group of Ss have prepared in advance the project which they Ss T/Ss Max. 10 min.
have to present and be evaluated for. The topic was English
literature and they have chosen William Shakespeare, Hamlet.
The Ss present their project.
The aim of the evaluation is the speaking and the originality of
the Ss presentation.
T evaluates the project presentation.
The presentation will also serve as an introduction to the topic of
the lesson

Activity 2 (speaking, pre-reading activity)


Aims:
To discuss issues related to Hamlet
To understand the meaning of Hamlets famous question- To be or not to be
Procedure Interaction Timing
T announces the topic of the lesson Hamlets soliloquy, then asks T Ss 10 min.
Ss to think about the last few days and answer the questions:
What successes have you had? Can you name three?
Ss are asked to share their successes. Ss T
T asks Ss to think about the things that were not successful for T Ss
them, the things that made them angry, frustrated, sad and name Ss T
three. Ss are asked to share them.
T explains that Hamlet had some serious problems: T Ss
His father has been murdered. His mother has married the
man who murdered his father. The girl he was going to
marry, Ophelia, has drowned herself. His fathers ghost
visits him every night. He must take revenge but he cannot
act something stops him. As he thinks about the situation,
he asks himself many questions. The first one is:
To be or not to be: that is the question.
Ss are asked to say what they think that this quotation means Ss T
(What is to be? What is not to be?)
Ss try to answer the question, to give their opinion if they were
Hamlet what they could think about while asking this question.

Activity 3 (reading activity)


Aims:
To develop skills needed to understand and adjust to the Shakespearean language
To develop skills needed to solve this type of exercise (matching)

Procedure Interaction Timing


T groups the Ss in five groups and distributes the first set of cards- T Ss 5 min.
worksheet A.
T explains that these are more of Hamlets thoughts in modern
language.
T asks Ss to read the sentences. Ss read the sentences trying to
understand Hamlets feelings
T asks Ss to match these with those from the original text
worksheet B.
T emphasizes the objective of the exercise that is to understand the
general idea and to match the two texts even if one is in modern
English and the other one is in a Shakespearean English.
T does not discuss vocabulary problems at this stage as it is not the
case GW 10 min.
Ss match the two texts; the group that solves the fastest and has the Ss T
correct answers is rewarded.
Activity 4 (vocabulary activity)
Aims:
To raise awareness of the meaning of the words
To develop vocabulary skills
Procedure Interaction Timing
T distributes worksheet C and invites Ss to look at the language, T Ss 5 min.
and then T asks Ss to match the problems Hamlet describes with
the other examples.
T encourages them to guess the meanings.
Ss try to do the matching exercise. GW
T rewards Ss and checks the answers

Activity 5 (discussion stage, speaking)


Aims:
To discuss questions related to Hamlet
To practise speaking in English
Procedure Interaction Timing
T asks Ss to answer the following question: Why does Hamlet T Ss 5 min.
hesitate so much? Why cant he act?
Each group will develop an answer and share it with the T and the
class.
T encourages communication in English. GW

Activity 6 - Homework
Aims:
To practise giving advice and opinions
To use structures such as You should, If I were you
To revise conditional type II
Procedure Interaction Timing
T gives home assignment: Ss will have to write advice that they T Ss 5 min.
would give Hamlet Portfolio
T explains that they will use structures such as You should, If I
were you and distributes worksheet E with the written assignment
T will check homeworks next lesson
