U n adecuado manejo de zonas arqueolgicas por dems emblemticas

del pas como lo son Monte Albn y Yagul en Oaxaca, no sera tal
de no atenderse tambin la diversidad y el cuidado de las especies natura-
les que constituyen la flora y fauna que estn presentes en sus ambientes
y que adems conforman el extraordinario marco natural en el que fueron
fundadas.
La Gua de Campo Aves de Mxico: Monte Albn y Yagul forma
parte del extraordinario proyecto que Manuel Grosselet y Georgita Ruiz
han impulsado desde hace varios aos, con el bondadoso afn de dar a
conocer al amplio pblico la enorme gama de aves presentes en nuestro
pas, y en esa medida, ganar adeptos para su conservacin. Su proyecto
result enteramente compatible con los objetivos de la conservacin inte-
gral de las zonas arqueolgicas que ha propuesto el Instituto Nacional de
Antropologa e Historia en Oaxaca para el patrimonio cultural arqueol-
gico. Este inters uni ambos proyectos, abriendo as la veta del conoci-
miento sobre las aves para el beneficio de los interesados en conocer las
zonas arqueolgicas ms all de su arqueologa.
La identificacin de aves en Monte Albn y Yagul ha resultado ser
un ejercicio de extraordinaria riqueza, toda vez que se han reconocido
especies cuyo hbitat natural son los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca. Otras,
en cambio, son aves migratorias que aparecen estacionalmente, para los
que se han identificado algunos parajes de las zonas arqueolgicas como
refugios temporales en sus trayectorias de vuelos anuales. Las aves han
constituido un gnero siempre admirado y respetado por la humanidad.
Esta Gua ofrece una recopilacin de las especies observadas en Monte
Albn y Yagul, con la informacin cientfica conocida hasta ahora. Ello
con el nico objetivo de hacer partcipe al gran pblico de una temtica
complementaria para su visita a las zonas arqueolgicas.
A travs de esta Gua de Campo, el usuario tiene en sus manos un
extenso conocimiento de la presencia de estas especies y disfrutar de
la posibilidad de recorrer los senderos que se han identificado para ob-
servarlas. Al mismo tiempo, los guas capacitados para acompaarlos en
estas visitas de actitud respetuosa a la arqueologa y al ambiente tendrn
la oportunidad de compartir sus conocimientos y vivencias locales as
como los datos cientficos que Manuel y Georgita les han transmitido para
lograr hacer un trabajo profesional y calificado.

A n adequate management of archeological sites, emblematic to this

country, such as Monte Alban and Yagul in Oaxaca, would not be
possible without attending to the diversity and care of the wild species of
flora and fauna present in their extraordinary natural surroundings where
they were found.
The Field Guide for Birds of Monte Alban and Yagul is part of
the extraordinary project that Manuel Grosselet and Georgita Ruiz have
been carrying out for several years now, with the noble aim of making the
understanding of the enormous variety of birds present in our country
available to the general public, in order to gain allies for their conserva-
tion. Thus their project is perfectly compatible with the objectives of
an integral conservation of the archeological sites as proposed by the
National Institute of Anthropology and History in Oaxaca for our ar-
cheological and cultural heritage. This common concern has linked both
projects, opening the venue for the benefit of those interested in the ar-
cheological sites beyond their archeology for learning about the birds.
The identification of birds of Monte Alban and Yagul has resulted
in an extraordinarily rich endeavor, since resident species pertaining to
the natural habitat of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca are being identified;
other migratory species that appear seasonally have been found within
the archeological sites in specific areas taking temporary refuge during
their annual migration. Birds have always been admired and respected
by humanity, thus, this Bird Guide Book offers information on a collec-
tion of species observed in Monte Alban and Yagul, providing scientific
information available today with the sole purpose of allowing the general
public to participate in this activity as a complement to their visit to the
archeological sites.
With this Bird Guide Book the visitor has in his hands the complete
information on the species present, while enjoying the privilege of walk-
ing through the bird watching paths, specially designed for this purpose.
At the same time the guides trained to conduct these visits, with an at-
titude of great respect for the archeology and the environment, will have
the opportunity to share their knowledge and local experience, as well as
the scientific facts that Manuel and Georgita have taught them in a pro-
fessional and qualified manner.

This bird is rare in Monte Alban and there
are no reports in Yagul; little is known of
this sparrow in this region. In summer, the
adult has a black chin, which is not visible
in winter when it is in Oaxaca.

Was introduced to New York from Europe
in 1851, now it is found everywhere in
