Jomer went on a school fieldtrip to a
salt factory. At the end of the tour
they were able to take free samples
home. They were each given a box
that measured 24.5 cm x 17 cm x 7.5
cm. Jomers bag could only hold
something with a length of 24.5 cm.
What is the width and height that
would give the box the maximum
possible volume?

Given:
l = 24.5 cm
w1 = 17 cm
h1 = 7.5 cm
V1 = ?
Asurface = ?
Primary Equation:
V = lwh

Secondary Equation:
A = 2lh + 2wh + 2wl
Finding Surface Area and Volume
As = 2lh + 2wh + 2wl
As = 2(24.5)(7.5) + 2(17)(7.5) + 2(24.5)(17)
As = 1455.5 cm2

V = lwh
V = (24.5)(17)(7.5)
V = 3123.75 cm3
Given:
l = 24.5 cm
w1 = 17 cm
h1 = 7.5 cm

V1 = 3123.75 cm

Asurface = 1455.5 cm
V = lwh
V = 24.5wh
As = 2lh + 2wh + 2wl
1455.5 = 2(24.5)h + 2wh + 2(24.5)w
1455.5 =49h + 2wh + 49w
1455.5 - 49h = 2wh + 49w
1455.5 - 49h = w(2h + 49)
(1455.5 - 49h) / (2h + 49) = w(2h + 49) / (2h + 49)
w = (1455.5 - 49h) / (2h + 49)
Given:
l = 24.5 cm
w1 = 17 cm
h1 = 7.5 cm
V1 = 3123.75 cm3
Asurface = 1455.5 cm2
Find:
V2 = ?
h2 = ?
w2 = (1455.5 - 49h) / (2h + 49) = ?
V = lwh (1455.5 - 49h)
w=
V = 24.5wh (2h + 49)
V = 24.5h((1455.5 - 49h) / (2h + 49))
V = (36547.5h - 1200.5h2) / (2h + 49)
V = (2h + 49(35647.5 - 2401h) - (35647.5h - 1200.5h2)(2)) /
(2h + 49)2
V = (-2401(h2 + 49h - 727.5)) / (2h + 49)2
C.N.: (h2 + 49h - 727.5) = 0, (2h + 49) = 0
C.N.: (h2 + 49h - 727.5) = 0, (2h + 49) = 0
Quadratic Formula: h = (-b b2 - 4ac) / 2a Completing the Square:
h = (-49 492 - 4(1)(-727.5)) / 2(1) ax2 + bx + (b/2)2 = -c + (b/2)2
h = (-49 + 492 - 4(1)(-727.5)) / 2(1) h2 + 49h - 727.5 = 0
h = 11.9383 h2 + 49h + (49/2)2 = 727.5 + (49/2)2
h = (-49 - 492 - 4(1)(-727.5)) / 2(1) h2 + 49h + (24.5)2 = 727.5 + 600.25
h = -60.9383 (h + 24.5)2 = 1327.75
h + 24.5 = 1327.75
2h + 49 = 0
2h = -49 h = 1327.75 - 24.5
h = -49/2 h = 36.4383 - 24.5
h = -60.9383, 11.9383
h = -60.9383, -24.5, 11.9383
First Derivative Test

V(11) = (-2401(h2 + 49h - 727.5)) / (2h +

V(12) = (-2401(h2 + 49h - 727.5)) / (2h +
49)2
49)2
= (-2401((11)2 + 49(11) - 727.5)) / (2(11) +
= (-2401((12)2 + 49(12) - 727.5)) / (2(12) +
49)2
49)2

w = 11.9383 cm

V = lwh
V = (24.5)(11.9383)(11.9383)
V = 3491.82 cm2
Given:
l = 24.5 cm
w1 = 17 cm
h1 = 7.5 cm
V1 = 3123.75 cm3
Asurface = 1455.5 cm2

Find:
V2 = 3491.82 cm3
h2 = 11.9383 cm
w2 = 11.9383 cm
The maximum volume of Jomers box is
3
3491.82 cm with a height and width of
11.9383 cm.
(V2 - V1) / V1(100%)
(3491.82 - 3123.75) / 3123.75 (100%) =
11.78% difference in volume
