PASSAGE 1

SECTION C

(25marks)

Questions 26 30 are based on the following passage

1 Camping is a popular activity among scouts, guides, cadets and many

members of other youth movements. It is a favourite pastime for those who love

nature and outdoor life. It is also an excellent way of spending a holiday with the

family. The campers can spend all day in the open, exploring and learning about the

countryside. 5

2 There are many activities they can participate in, for example, jungle trekking,

mountain-climbing, canoeing, fishing, cooking over open fires and pitching tents.

Perhaps what thrills the campers most is the idea of sleeping out under the stars, and

being close to nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

3 For those who intend to go camping for the first time, here are some useful tips. 10

First, remember to choose your equipment carefully to enable you to travel light and

yet have all you need. Your personal equipment may include the required clothing, a

sweater, pyjamas and a towel. You may need a raincoat, a pair of comfortable shoes

and sandals, a swimming trunk or a swimsuit, torchlight, some simple utensils and

toilet material. A rucksack is useful if there is a lot of walking to do. Saddle-bags can 15

also be used, especially for the cyclists.

4 Whatever it is, it may be a good idea to put your things in separate plastic bags

so that they do not get wet or dirty. Ensure that your camping group is equipped with a

first-aid kit containing at least some antiseptics, lint, sticking plaster and bandages for

common emergencies likes blisters, burns, cuts and insect bites. The group also has 20

to decide who will take along the tents, sleeping bags, the necessary tools and a

reasonable amount of food. Canned meat, sardine, butter and jam are practical food
supplies. Dried or concentrated food and juices are tasty and easy to prepare.

5 It is important to choose a suitable campsite. Safety and comfort should be

considered. The organizer or leader should find out from the owner of the land or the 25

relevant authority whether they could camp there. Here are some pointers for

choosing a suitable campsite. You should avoid a hollow into which water may

accumulate when there is rain. Do not choose a site under a tree because of danger

from lightning and strong winds. The ideal campsite should be situated on high

ground. Look for a place where fresh water and perhaps firewood are easily available. 30

Once the site is chosen, find a level place to pitch the tents. Of course, you have to

check first the layout of the camp; where the fireplace, woodpile, latrine, refuse pit and

cooking site will be.

6 All campers should bear in mind at all times not to destroy nature or public

property. Any act of vandalism should be avoided. Always keep the camp clean and 35

tidy. This means there should be no littering at the campsite. Collect any fallen

branches as firewood. Do not pluck flowers or uproot plants for no apparent reason.

When the camp is over, clean up the whole place. Bury or burn whatever rubbish that

is left behind. Ensure that all camp-fires are extinguished completely. By the time you

are ready to leave for home, the campsite should be as new as before and no one 40

should be able to tell that there has been a camp on the site.

PASSAGE 2

SECTION C

(25marks)

Questions 26-30 are based on the following passage.

1 My child spends too much time watching television, remarked a concerned

mother. The moment he comes back from school, he is glued to the TV set.

Watching televisions seems to have taken priority over his schoolwork and even

his meals. And what about the negative influence violence, sex and bad

language? 5

2 I have to shut off the idiot box to stop my son from watching certain

programmes, fumed another parent. I think the censorship board members need

to pull up their socks.

3 Even during examination time, my children insist on watching their favourite

programmes, complained another mother. Sometimes good programmes such 10

as the National Geographic are screened late at night. The children need to sleep

early as they have to wake up in time for school the next day.

4 The above are typical remarks of many parents about the negative influence

of television. They fail to see the good side of television, that is, what good it can

do for their children. In fact, it has been found that TV does help the children. It 15

can be an invaluable teaching tool, if one knows how to use it. There have been

records of pre-school children who were able to add simple sums or spell

common words as a result of watching TV. Some have startled their parents by

exhibiting unexpected knowledge gleaned from the screen. According to

psychologists, TV can numb childrens minds or expand them. Researchers have 20

found that children who do best in school watch about ten hours of TV a week.

Those who watch more and those who watch less than the stipulated time do not

perform as well.

5 It looks like with proper control and planning, children stand to gain more from

TV. What the parents can do is to monitor the time and the type of TV 25

programmes their children watch. They should do this early, when their children

are slightly over two years old. This is the time when the children begin to spend

more of their free time in front of the screen. Ensure that the programme projects

the desired moral values. Do not assume that all childrens programmes are

educational. This means that parents have to familiarize themselves with the 30

programmes beforehand. They may have to scrutinize to see what lessons are

being taught and what the moral values are.

6 Parents should also set time limits for their children. Watching TV during meal

time is not encouraged. Ensure that homework and family activities take priority

over TV. During school examinations, children should be barred from watching 35

even their favourite programme. An alternative is to videotape the programme so

that they still have a chance to watch it later. Parents should be selective in letting

children watch programmes.

7 Do not simply let them watch just because they are bored or have nothing

else to do. It is also a good thing to watch TV together with the family members. A 40

little discussion during commercial breaks and after the programme is over will

help the children more and become more analytical.

SECTION C

1 It was very hard for the little girl. For a very short time, she remembered the

sound of her mothers voice and what trees and flowers looked like. However,

these memories faded, she was shut up in a pitch-dark, absolutely silent world.

She could not run about and play. She could only hold on to her mothers skirt and

try to make signs for what she wanted to say. She had to feel the chairs and 5

tables and her toys with her hands to find out what they were.

2 Sometimes Helen got into violent tempers during those early years. It was

easy to see why. She was a very intelligent, quick-witted little girl and wanted to

do and say a great many things. She said later that she felt as if invisible hands

were holding her. She tried hard but she could never escape from these invisible 10

hands. She did not even know it was wrong to get into rages. No one was able to

explain right and wrong to a little girl who could not see or hear, any more than

they could explain sunshine.

3 The Kellers tried to make their little girl happy, but sometimes they lost hope.
What can we do? Mrs Keller exclaimed to Mr Keller one day after Helen had had 15

one of her tantrums. She cant see us! She cant hear us! She cant speak to us!

4 Yet Helen kept on trying to do the things a seeing and hearing child could do.

She dressed and undressed her dolls, folded their clothes and arranged them in

neat piles, and in this way came to understand how to take care of her own

clothes. She discovered that her mother always dressed with more care than 20

usual when she expected guests; so one day, feeling the commotion of people

arriving at the house, she hurried upstairs to change her clothes. After a while she

appeared in the living room with her face thickly powdered, a long veil covering

her face and neck, and a bustle tied on behind. It was her idea of the way to make

guests feel welcome. She looked very comical, but the visitors were deeply 25

touched by the thought of her dressing up for them.

5 When Helen was about six years old, her parents took her to a famous eye-

doctor in Baltimore. Of course the doctor could not give her back her sight, but he

did something she was grateful for to the end of her life. He introduced her mother

and father to Dr Alexander Graham Bell. Dr Bell was the scientist who had 30

invented the telephone, but he was almost as well known for his good work in

educating the deaf. He took Helen on his knee and let her feel his watch. He

understood exactly what she meant by her sign-talk and that made him her friend

at once. And it was Dr Bell who found Helen her wonderful teacher, Miss Anne

Mansfield Sullivan, who taught her to speak by hand-spelling. 35

6 Miss Sullivan had been blind herself when she was a child, but she was

lucky; doctors were able to give her back her sight. When she was older, she went

to the Perkins Institution for the Blind in Boston to learn how to teach blind

children to read and take an active part in life.

7 It was the third of March, 1887, when Miss Sullivan arrived at the Kellers little 40

house. Helen Keller said some time afterwards that the third of March was her
real birthday. Describing what happened that day, she said, I felt approaching

footsteps. I stretched out my hand, trying to touch my mother. Someone took it,

and I was caught up and held close in the arms of her who had come to reveal all

things to me, and , more than all else, to love me. 45

8 Anne Sullivan understood from the start that little Helen didnt know what love

was. Other little children can see love in their mothers eyes, and hear all the

loving words and tones parents and brothers and sisters use. But this little girl

who could not see or hear had to learn about love in some other way. Her teacher

began this lesson by giving her a doll. 50

Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.

1 You mess up your History test and a classmate storms up to your desk and

abuses you. Do you yell back and suggest that he drops dead or something to

that effect? Or do you simply smile and shrug it off as one of those days?

2 Whether you are having a bad day at school or recovering from an illness,

laughter may be the best medicine it is natural, free, positively contagious and 5

very effective. The arrival of a good clown exercises a more beneficial influence
upon the health of a town than twenty asses laden with drugs, said the 17th

century physician Thomas Sydenham. And he was not far from the truth.

3 Laughter exercises the muscles in your face, shoulders, diaphragm and

abdomen. During a hearty laugh, oxygen surges through the bloodstream and 10

your brain orchestrates hormonal rushes that raise alertness and numb pain.

Scientists at the Centre of Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland in

America believe that laughter is very good for the heart.

4 We start laughing when we are around 10 weeks old. At 16 weeks, we laugh

at least once an hour and by four, we are cracking about every four minutes. In 15

contrast, the average adult only manages to laugh about 16 times a day. It

appears that we actually took it to heart what our parents told us that life was no

laughing matter.

5 In order to get ourselves laughing, it has been suggested that we expose

ourselves to humour watch funny movies, learn jokes, start to laugh at ourselves 20

and improve our sense of ridiculous. However, we should try to avoid using

negative humour, and that includes sarcasm, ridicule, contempt and joking about

peoples names.

6 Knowing you are not alone is a key to great physical and mental health. In our

day-to-day life, we rarely laugh alone. Laughter tracks in sitcoms testify to the fact 25

that we are readily to laugh when we are with people. Laughter is about

relationships and about sharing qualities that are known to relieve stress and to

promote recovery from illness, especially among cancer sufferers.

7 Sadly, bad mood is something many of us are experiencing with more

frequency while occasions for us to have a good and hearty laugh are becoming 30

few and far between. It is not surprising when you think of the hectic lifestyles and

pressures we live with today, but too many down days can start to seriously

interfere with our work, relationships and home life.

8 So, the next times you are feeling low, instead of wallowing in self-pity, laugh

and shake off that bad feeling and you can lift your spirits immediately. 35

1 This was Miss Bracegirdles first visit to France. She did not usually take

live in France, she thought. The thing to understand is that it is quite different

from Easingstoke.

2 She unpacked her things one by one out of her bag and put them away 5

carefully. She thought about her home in Easingstoke, with flowers in all the

rooms and the photographs of the family. She thought about her poor brother,

working so hard. She felt a little sad, but only for a minute. Her time in France was

to be quite short. She was going to be home again soon. Now she must get a

3 She took off her day things and put on her nightdress. Then she picked up

her washing things and went to the bathroom, closing her bedroom door quietly.

She lay in the hot water and thought about the nice young girl in the hotel who

4 She got out of the bath and put her nightdress again. She cleaned the bath

very carefully. She did not want the French people to think the English were dirty.

Then, she left the bathroom. She went in quickly, put on the light and shut the

door. Then, one of those unlucky things happened; the handle of the door came

off in her hand. She tried to put the handle back on the door but she could not. 20

How do I do it? she thought. It is difficult to open the door now. Do I ask that nice

girl to come and help me? Perhaps by now she is in bed.

5 She turned away from the door, and suddenly, she saw something much,

much worse than the door handle. There was a man in her bed! She took one

look at his thick black hair and his black moustache and immediately felt quite ill 25

with fear. For a minute or two, she could not think. Then her first thought was: I

must not scream! She stood there but could not move. She just looked at the

mans dark head and the big line of his back under the bed things. She began to
think very quickly.

6 Her next thought was: I am in the wrong room. It is the mans room. She 30

could his jacket and trousers lying on a chair and his black shoes on the floor. She

must get out quickly. But how? She tried again to open the door with her fingers

but she could not. Here she was, shut in a hotel room with an unknown man a

Frenchman! She must think! She must think! She turned off the light.

7 What if the big hairy man pulled her back by the legs as she tried to get out? 35

He could wake up at any minute. She thought that she heard somebody going

past outside the door. But it was too late to scream now.

8 Suddenly she had an idea. It was now nearly one oclock in the morning.

Perhaps the sleeping man was not dangerous. At seven or eight oclock, he must

get up and go out to work. She lay down on the floor and got under the bed. No 40

sound came from the man above her, but from down there it was difficult to hear

anything. She tried to think of her nice little bedroom in Easingstoke with its nice

white bed but the floor was getting harder every minute.

9 She tried to think what her room number was. One hundred and fifteen? Or

was it one hundred and sixteen? She was always bad at remembering numbers. 45

She began to think of her schooldays and interesting thing she learned then.

Suddenly, she felt that she was going to sneeze. She could not stop it.This is the

end of me, Miss Bracegirdle thought. But she did sneeze. Her fear was much too

strong. She stayed very quiet and listened. But nothing happened. Miss

Bracegirdle suddenly knew that she could not stay under the bed any longer. It 50

was better to come out, wake up the man and tell him everything. With difficulty

she got out from the bed and said as strongly as she could. Monsieur! Nothing

happened. She looked at the man and said again, Monsieur! Monsieur!

10 But again, there was no answer. She went closer to the bed. His mouth was

opened but his eyes were shut. His hair and moustache were very black but his 55
face had no colour in it. Then, for the third time that night, Miss Bracegirdle nearly

died of fear. Suddenly, her legs felt weak as water. She nearly fell down.

11 Because the man in the bed was dead! It was her first time that she stood face

to face with a dead person, but there was no mistake. The man was dead. Miss

Bracegirdle could only say, Hes dead! Hes dead! 60

as well as tourists gather at Rantau Abang to witness this unique event. As these beaches are

open to the public, it is often difficult to control the number of people present during leatherback

nesting. Despite efforts by the government and the mass media to educate the public on turtle

landings, there are still groups of people that camp in the area and build bonfires, which disturb

the nesting process.

Other problem is the growth of the tourism industry in Rantau Abang which also disrupted

the nesting process, as bright lights and loud noises near the beachfront cause the turtles to shy

away. Turtles typically seek dark and undisturbed beaches for nesting. Nesting turtle often avoid

lighted areas;
PASSAGE 6 therefore strong light and noise from beachfront structures and coastal residents as

1 well as uncontrolled use of torchlight and flash photography by beach visitors can disrupt nesting

activity.

Besides that, turtles landing in Rantau Abang also catch attention of many egg poachers.

In their lifetime, an adult female turtle can produce thousands of eggs. Each female lays hundreds

of eggs per nesting seasons and returns to nest only after three to four years. Therefore, the high 5

number of eggs laid per clutch per seasons is to make up for the high levels of hatchling and

juvenile mortalities before reaching adulthood. In Malaysia, turtle eggs are still harvest

commercially. The practice of collecting turtles eggs for sale and eating turtle
2

eggs can seriously threaten turtles population. Turtle eggs can be ten times more expensive

than chicken eggs although their nutritional properties are comparable. Any medical property
25
claimed in turtle eggs has never been scientifically confirmed. Even with effort to forbid the

collecting of turtle eggs, they are still harvested commercially in some parts of Malaysia and

often can be found for sale in local markets.

To overcome this threat, an increasing number of turtle sanctuaries are currently being

established along the Rantau Abang shores. Turtles eggs laid on the beach are located and
30
replanted by scientists in incubator centers to prevent them from stolen and eaten. These

artificial hatcheries also provide controlled conditions which may help to overcome the problem

of uneven sex ratio in the leatherback population and consequently bring about the recovery of
5
this species in Rantau Abang.

Malaysia and her neighbours are blessed with a climate which favours the generous

growth of various types of fruits rambutans, mangosteens, cikus, nangkas, langsats and a host
11. artificial hatcheries help to overcome the problem of uneven ratio
of others. Among these, the durian is indisputably the most popular. Durian connoisseurs are
12. consequently bring about the recovery of this species
willing to undergo great difficulties, traveling through all kinds of terrain in search of the best

variety. Rightfully, the durian is regarded by locals and some visitors as the king of fruits for its

soft, creamy and mouth-watering flesh inside.

To most Malaysian, eating durian is a delightful experience and even to some westerners,

the durian holds an awesome mystery. A.R Wallace, in his book entitled The Malay Archipelago,

has this to say about durians,.to eat durians is a new sensation, worth a voyage to the East to

experience. The flesh of durians taste like a rich custard and gives forth a smell that is distinctive

and aromatic. The smell is so thick and pervasive that it lingers on a person for hours after he

(she) has taken the fruit. To those who have not acquired a liking for the fruit (mostly Europeans

but there are some locals born with a peculiar palate) the durian, or rather its flesh, smells like

rotten onion or some even say it smells like a dirty, public toilet. The nauseating smell that is too

strong to conceal makes it a banned item in hotels and aeroplanes.

The edible part of durians is its flesh or pulp and it can be taken in a variety of ways. It can

be eaten7 raw and that is how it is often consumed. It can also be eaten with glutinous rice and
PASSAGE

1 coconut milk. Malays like to boil durian pulp with sugar, making lempok which is actually

sweetened durian paste. The pulp can also be used to make durian cake, durian jam or as a

flavouring.

One can really have an insatiable appetite for the durian during its fruiting seasons. Durian

is eaten at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Excessive consumption of the durian can be cause 5

flatulence but it is a discomfort durian lovers are willing to put up with.

But a word of warning: folklore dictates that durians should not be taken with alcohol,

notably beer. Taking durian with alcohol can prove to be fatal. Cases have been cited of
deaths resulting from a feast of durians and beer, though not reported in the press. A mixture of

durian and beer is reportedly a lethal combination, though this has not been verified scientifically.
2
The durian is not a cheap fruit. Though durian is sold at expensive price, this does not

deter those who have a craving for the fruit. Selling durian is a lucrative business. At the height of

durian season, when the craving for durians has become a contagious fever, durians are
10
ubiquitiously sold at the makeshift roadside stalls, pasar malam or in the wet markets. Hundreds

of ringgit change hands as deals are stuck almost every minute. The durian is not only sold in the

domestic markets, but the handpicked ones are exported overseas to Japan, Hong Kong and

Europe.

The durian tree is large and tall with small leaves. It has a straight trunk growing to a
15
height of 40 meters, topped by a canopy of almost horizontal branches and leaves. A durian tree

starts to bear fruit after five years of age and it can bear fruit twice a year. The fruit is not plucked
3
from the tree but is left to fall when it ripens. About the size of a rugby ball, the durian fruit bears a

formidable appearance which belies the soft, creamy treasure hidden inside. It is difficult to open

a durian for its exterior is rough and covered with spikes, which can puncture your skin if not
20
properly handled. But once open, its soft interior is smooth, smoothing and tempting.

Opening a durian requires a large amount of expertise. The novice often commits the silly
4
act of hacking the tough fruit open, which is clumsy and barbaric. The durian should be gently

opened. An expert looks for faint grooves hidden among the thorns and using a long knife,

carefully slices along these lines of weakness. With the right twist, the durian can easily be
5 25
opened.

help me dig the garden and sit beside me while I weed or tend to my plants. He also loved to

roam the woods alone. Each morning, he would disappear for an hour or so. He would bring back

something to play, a discarded shoe, an empty can and even a monkeys skull. One morning, he

brought back a starving wild cat. He hovered anxiously while I gave it some milk. Then, he carried

it into the garage and they become best of pals from that day onwards. They made a funny picture

together, a white, shaggy mongrel and a skinny, wild cat.

He was also a prefect friend. On rainy days, when I had to go to the shop nearby, he

1 would insist on jumping into the car. Whenever I refused, he would chase the car all over town

and wait outside till Ive finished running my errands. Whenever I went to school, he would

accompany me while I waited for my bus, yelping as I got on the bus, saying goodbye in his own

way. I would look forward to seeing him running joyously down the road to meet the bus again.

2 Whenever I felt down or depressed, he had an uncanny way of sensing my unhappiness. He 5

would sit as close to me as possible and lay his head on my lap. Through the years, he became

more than a dog to me as I threw away all the walls I had built around me.

On his tenth anniversary, I was surprised that he was not there to meet me after school. I

went to his usual place of rest but he was not there. By evening, I sensed something was
3 wrong as it was unlike Spotty to stay away that long. He finally appeared in the kitchen. I gave him 10

a hug but I could feel that he was having a fever. I sent him to the veterinarian immediately and he

was given a shot. I had to leave him there overnight.

I visited him the next morning and he looked happy to see me. Yet, there was something

not quite right in his eyes. I took him home but his condition worsened. Subsequent visit to the vet

seemed to make him worse. 15

A few nights later, he came quietly beside me. He nudged my hand, wanting me to scratch

4 his head. I thought he was getting better. My friends came over in a car and asked me to go for a

drive. So, I jumped into the car and told Spotty to get into the house as it was getting a little chilly,

not knowing that it would be our last goodbye.

He disappeared the next morning. I searched everywhere for him. I went to all our 20

favourite haunts but he was not there. I called out for him till my voice was hoarse. Father knew

what I was going through as he had seen it happen before but he could not say anything. Mother

gave me a look which said I told u so. She was not the type to get close to animals. I could not

sleep as I imagined every bark was his and came out to check every now and then. I pictured him

5 being killed by wild animals in the woods or being lost and hungry. 25

A few days later, my neighbours gardener came over. He told father that he had found

Spotty in a hole at the back of their garage. He had dug a hole and died there. His words cut

through me like a knife. I held back the tears and offered to bury Spotty. He said the stench was

awful and they had just buried him in their garden.

6 I ran as fast I could. I had to get away and be with him. I must have run at least four 30

kilometers before the tears finally came. I clung to a tree and wept. My father had said that a good

dog would never die in its own home as it does not want to trouble its loved one. I had not said

7 goodbye properly and I felt bad for leaving him that night when I should have been with him. As I

cried under the tree, I sensed someone with me. I looked up and saw Mee Mee, the wild cat,

beside me. She probably missed Spotty as much as I did. Together, we walked home, mourning

our loss. I shall miss Spotty for the rest of my life.
