Entrepreneurship and Virtue Ethics

So far, I have sketch the entrepreneurial process in terms of traits that leads to
action to entrepreneurial success.
What does this (entrepreneurship) have to do with morality?
Let me first make a connection to morality by mean of cortations of 3 major names
and history of entrepreneurship. J.P. Morgan, Georges Doriot, and Kevin OConnor.
J.P. Morgan was an American banker and financier of the late 90 th and early 20st
centuries. He was before goverentment hearing and the senator ask him
whether money was loaned out based on ones assets. Morgan replied No sir, the
first thing is CHARACTER. And Morgan continued If someone he couldt ask for
funding he wouldnt make the loan even if he had all the bonds in Christendom.
Georges Doriot is often described of the father of entire capitals. He was a French
man who immigrated to the USA in the middle part of the 20st century. .
describe him this way Doriot spends most of his time talking to people who bring
him prospective investments. He says he has considered no less than 5000 of them
since 1946. He is considered by friends and critics alike as a brilliant judge of
character. But he has to be, he explains. When someone comes in with an idea
thats never been tried, the only way you can judge is by the kind of a man youre
dealing with.
Kevin OConnor is a 21st century Ventury Capitalist who is co-founder and former
CEO of DoubleClick. DoubleClick is the worlds largest internet advertising
technology company that was recently acquired for several billion dollars ($3.1
billion). In an interview, OConnor was asked what he looks for in people who were
seeking venture capital from him. I look at 3 big things: Have they found a big
problem in a big market? Have they solve the problem in what I believe to be the
most effective way? And are they able to pull it of are they smart, are they
aggressive, are they honest, and hard-working?
Now note the common theme of the cortation from Morgan Doriot and OConnor
Character The 3 men speak of being trustworthy, being smart, honest,
hardworking, having character and so on, In their expert judgement as the meeting
future business success is first about judging character. Now let me connect
entrepreneurial success and morality by talking about virtue, one major approach to
ethics true is study virtue. Virtue is an action-guiding character traits that aim at
good results. The ethic literature is populated with many competing a count of what
the good result should be? And consequently with competing a count of what virtue
should we uphold?
Some virtue artists make the claim that character has priority in ethical evaluation
over rules or principles, actions:, and consequences. By setting aside the
issue of whether virtue has priority, my concern here is to connect entrepreneurial
traits and virtues. Virtue isabout good character in action. Here is our list of
entrepreneurial elements (entrepreneurial success traits):
knowledge and creativity,
ambition
guts
initiative
perseverance
trial & error
productivity
win-win trade
leadership
Entrepreneurial consequences experiencing and enjoying success.

Now if we cas out the above entrepreneurial character traits and terms of virtues,
that is in terms of the character traits and commitments that enable and constitude
good action, then we can make the following actions, first, the entrepreneur
generating and evaluating informed creative idea connects to the virtue of
rationality. Rationality is the commitment to the full exercise of one reason, the
entrepreneur initial active and creative thinking are function of reason, as if the
exercise of evaluating judgement and determiting of which business ideas are
actualy the good ones. That requires matured development of ones mind, being
able to think outside the given, and the usual of thats the way were always done it
(do differently.
Next, the entrepreneurs ambition and drive for success connects to the virtue of
pride. Pride is a forward looking, and the backward looking as bad. For example,
taking pride of what one has accomplished is the forward looking aspect .. here.
Taking pride in ones self means wanting the best for ones life, which means
commitment to achieving the best in ones life. For examples, taking pride in ones
appearance means wanting to look ones best, which implies the commitment to
health, hygiene, and style. To connect back business and entrepreneurshp, the
entrepreneur drive for success is a consequence of taking pride of the business part
of his. Life.
The entrepreneur is sowing initiative by being a self-starter to bringing the business
plan into existence, connect to the virtue of integrity, integrity of the virtue of acting
on the base of what one believe true and good, it is translating thought into
practice, that is ones thought is integrated with ones actions. Or ones believe of
what would be good or integrated with ones actions to bring that good into
existence from planning.
GUTS. Next, the entrepreneur commitment of action despite the fear that comes
from being aware of the risk connects to the virtue of courages, courage is a virtue
of commiting to one judges to be right, while being aware both intelectualy and
emotionaly of the possibles of failure, 3 aspectsof failure are relevanr here, one
aspect is financial failure, another aspects is negative reaction of being judges to
failure by others, another aspects is self-reflective, seing one self as a failure.
Courage means facing and surmounting these fears.
Next, entrepreneurs persevering through difficulties, disapproval, and another
temporary doubts with the connects with the virtue of independence. Independence
is a virtue of trusting ones own judgement, and acting on the best of ones own
judgement, ones own short term frustations, and contrary opinios of others.
Next, the entrepreneur is working through the trial and error process of a product
development, connects to the virtue of objectivity. objectivity is the policy of guiding
ones thoughts by ones best awareness of the facts of being open to new facts, or
put it negatively not wearing intellectual linders and avoiding uncomfortable feed
back from reality. And important thing/ elements!! Honesty, the policy of not
pretending to ones self or to others that facts are not facts.
Next, entrepreneurs productivity, connects to the virtue of productiveness.
Productiveness is a whther going gets toughs or youre almost finished
what youre tired for the next thing and the last to be see it through and make it
happened and complete the project.
WIN WIN TRADE. Next, the entrepreneurs trading value for value customers and
employees connects to the value of justice. Justice is a commitment to evaluating,
interacting with individuals according to their merit, and being evaluated &
interacted with according to merit, justice applies to business means trades are
entered into voluntarily that means on a base of each part is independent
judgement, and that the terms of trades are established by each part is
independent judgement of the merit.
Next, leadership. Leadership involves many traits: vision, communication skills,
independent, decisiveness, and justice. And we do not have in English, a virtue
concept for that set of traits. Instead tipically sort people as good or bad leader, and
identifie collection of traits that made some individual effective leader. So let us
give simple the awkward label leadersip ness to the commitment to and practice at
leadership traits.
Finalli, the entrepreneurs accieving success, imcluding the financial rewards,
psychological rewards of creating a floration business, connects to the general
moral value of flourishing, happiness, and fulfillment, flourishing or happiness is the
state of successful living. As ones bussinessn life is a component of ones overall
life, the entrepreneur is engaging in the actions that leads to flourishing in business
is a component of an overall flourishing life.
The entrepreneurs actions both constitude and lead to a life that is fully realized.
