The Affections of Travelling to the Travelers.

Introduction

More than 7.16 trillion dollars was spent on travelling by travelers all around the

world each year (Statista, 2016). The statistic can prove that many people were interested in

travelling. Some group of people take travelling as one of their hobbies and travel every when they

have a free day. Like Danny Kaye, a famous American actor once said To travel is to take a

journey into yourself which mean every time a journey takes place, the traveler will learn

something more about themselves. Travelling can effect to travelers mind, soul or physical body

without knowing when it happens. There are many factors that affect traveler such as new

experience on different culture that can open up their mind, different environment where can make

them relax from their stress or even exploring the thing that they have not known about themselves,

of who they are and what they really need in life. These could be the reason those cause lots of

people to travel more than they used to. Certainly, no matter where they go or how long they

travel, there are always many factors that can effects people mind either behavior which can be in

a better or worse way depend on what did the travelers have been through on their journey. The

first example is improved problem travelers would have more creative and expanded way for

solving issues. The second example is open minded and more confidence. The travelers will be

more open to new experiences and ready to try something new without any shy. Expanded

themselves; travelers always dare themselves to try new thing that they have never done it before
BUNWATTANACHOTIKARN 2

and when the have the first time, they probably ask themselves again What more can I do. The

last example is curious the meaning of life. The traveler explores them by travelling. They try

different experiences until they know what they like and know what they want for the rest of their

life. Moreover, they often have goals in life which can direct them to the right direction of life.

Therefore, this research is to identify the effect on travelling on 3 different aspects, included mind,

behavior and physical body.

The Affections of Mind

To begin with, it is believed that travelling can improve a persons psychological health.

When a person travels, his or her mind will be more open. Franz Neyer and Julia Zimmermann

two students from Germany experimented a giant group of German College student. The students

were separated into 2 groups, experimental group and control group. An experimental group was

a group of student that study aboard for one to two semesters or a full year while the group of

student who was not travelling at all is the control group. After the experimental group returned

from their trip, those who travelled tended to have more open minded or open to new experiences.

In contrast, participants who did not travel maintain the same atmosphere and social network for

the whole time will focus what was usually normal for them. Furthermore, travelling can easily

bring people out of their comfort zone and find their new perspective of life. In 2016, Viraltravel,

a travelling website had published a journal about traveling and comfort zone. Stepping outside

your comfort zone when travelling is the greatest way to experience adventure, without there being

too much risk. It is more about learning things about yourself, and about another culture that

travelers have never experienced it before. When travelers are on their trip they will absolutely

find out many new cultures such as foods, buildings and languages. The most important thing is

they feel risk which means they already walked out of their comfort zone. They will learn how to
BUNWATTANACHOTIKARN 3

adapt themselves to the different cultures or different people with different background by get out

of their comfort and get to know some person while travelling. After you have tried many things

that you have not done it before, you will know what you really like and your new track of life by

getting new inspiration while travelling. Besides those three effects, travelling can heal the stress

from travelers by adrenaline. Stress is very serious issues which can cause many health problems

such as weight gain, heart attack, cancer or diabetes. On the other hand, stress can be easily

decreased by increase adrenaline. According to DeCosta (2013) Adrenaline experiment, she let

her participants play a video game and test their heart beat rates and blood pressure. The result

was the study group was doing a bungee jump their heart beat rates and blood pressure

dramatically increased before they jump which basically means they were stress and freak out.

After they jump, their circulations surprisingly decreased. During they were having stress, their

bodies always released hormones and increase adrenaline to fight or get away stress by increasing

their blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate and it keeps doing until their bodies can take

over the stress. That is why some kind of travelling such as sky diving, parachuting or bungee

jumping can heal the stress. Therefore, after travelers travel, their always have many effect those

impact to the travelers psychological health such as open minded, new perspective of life, stress

healing and comfort zone breaking.

The Affections of Behavior

After travelers mind have changed after travelling, their behavior changed along

with their mind. First, travelers will be able to speak another language faster. According to The

New York Times reports which was written under the title of Why Bilinguals are smarter in

March 12, 2012. The report said, in early years scientist have begun to show that the preferences

of people who speak bilinguals are even basic than being able to converse with a broader range of

people. Being Bilingual, it turns out make you smarter. It can have a fathomless effect on your
BUNWATTANACHOTIKARN 4

brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even defensing against dementia

when bilingualism gets older. In a 2004 study by psychologist Ellen Bialystok and Michele

Martin-Rhee, bilingual and monolingual preschoolers were asked to sort blue circle and red

squares presented on a computer screen into two digital bins, one marked with blue square and the

other marked with a red circle. The first task, the children had to sort the shapes by color, placing

blue circles in the bin marked with the blue square and red square in the bin marked with the red

circle. As the result, both groups fi this with analogous comfort ease. After that, the children were

asked to sort by shape, which was more challenging because it required placing the images in a

bin marked with a conflicting color. The bilingual were quicker at performing the task. As same

as travelling, when travelers take a trip to foreign country, they are forced to speak English or

another languages which make their brain more practical and work faster. Travelers will be able

to reply or translate the conversation in another tongue quicker than they used to. Other effect that

comes from traveling is the travelers become more aware of everything. Furthermore, traveling

can make traveler to become more careful. Good travel is the result of good planning. That applies

to any trip travelers take, but it is especially true when travelers heading to a foreign country. The

travelers have to think about the places where they want to go, the budget that they need to bring,

the stock of medicines incase that they need even to learn key phrases in the local language. These

steps of planning will practice the travelers to be more cautious. The effects on travelers behavior

are linked their psychological which might or might or happen on themselves. However, most of

the impact are not dangerous, actually, it make the travelers improve themselves in a better way.

The Affections of Physical Body

Most of the people do not know that their physical bodies are changed after

travelling as well. It is very normal that every traveler will take at least a selfie. Suddenly, they

always find out, there is an acne or pimple appear on his or her face. The cause of the issue is
BUNWATTANACHOTIKARN 5

humidity on an aircraft. Low humidity on airplanes dries out the face skin, leads to barrier

disruption, and causes skin irritation. Oil glands may go into overdrive in response to loss of skin

oil and dryness during your flight. In some people, this means dry itchy skin, in others, it can be a

flare of conditions like acne, rosacea, or eczema. However, this issue can be easily solve by keep

travelers bodies hydrate both inside and outside. Secondly, jet lack can effect and delay period.

According to research Traveling and Period (Nguyen, 2017) circadian rhythm influences

hormone release and other important bodily functions, so when your rhythm is off, this can affect

the hormones such as estrogen and progesterone that play a key role in ovulation and your

menstrual cycle. There might not be an estrogen spike that leads up to ovulation, or perhaps the

estrogen spike is delayed due to the change in your bodys rhythm, so you will have a later period

than normal that month. Furthermore, long flight on the sky can bring headache to travelers.

Though there is plenty of oxygen in a fully airborne plane cabin, the air pressure keeps us from

being able to fully absorb that oxygen that is freely moving about the cabin into our bloodstream.

This can lead to feelings of fatigue and a horrible headache. But before travelers will got headache,

their sense of taste will be gone first. Our perception of saltiness and sweetness drops by around

30 percent at around 35,000 feet high where the transportation plane fly. It also does not help that

the decreased humidity in the cabin dries out your nose and dulls the sensory sensors essential for

tasting the flavor of an ingredient or dish. That is the reason of food tasted worse on the plane.

However those issues such as acne appearance, period routine changed and headache even less

ability of taste can be easily treat and not too harmful in long term for the travelers physical bodies.

Therefore, travelers should take care and prepare themselves for the trip.

Conclusion

In conclusion, many pieces of trustable evidence those are mentioned above can prove that

traveling is definitely affected to travelers either in good or bad ways. Therefore, the effect can be
BUNWATTANACHOTIKARN 6

separated into 3 main parts, psychological health, self-behavior and physical body. The travelers

minds are the biggest part which is affected by traveling. According to the experiment of Franz

Neyer and Julia Zimmermann who test the two groups of student who study aboard and in their

country. The result shows that the learners who study in another country have more open mind

and perspective. Travelling can also bring the travelers out of their comfort zone by changing their

thought to try something new, and heal stress. Adrenaline those release from traveling and extreme

sports will be a good treatment for people who want to decrease their pressure. The second largest

impacted part is behavior. People who travel will be able to speak another tongue faster than the

others. It means their brain will work faster and able to respond another language faster as well.

There is an experiment about the theory by psychologist Ellen Bialystok and Michele Martin-

Rhee. They let young children do a task about putting the stuff in the right order of colors, the

group of children who are bilingual can complete the task faster than the others. Moreover,

travelers will become more careful because they have to think more about their facilities, clothes

and what they need for their trip. The last as traveling gives fewer effects on is physical health.

Most of the effects caused by transportations such as a plane, it can cause many effects but most

of them are not very harmful and not last so long such as pimples or acnes. It always pops up

during a long flight because of humidity and pressure on a plane. The air on an aircraft is very dry,

therefore, it obviously makes passengers skin dry and oily which is the cause of acne and pimples.

Also, the pressure on the craft can definitely make traveler get a headache and lose their ability to

taste. However, these physical effects will be gone when traveler or passenger get out of the plane.

Therefore, these are few impacts which can be easily seen and felt after taking a journey. Never

the less, every traveler should observe and ask themselves what are the things those have changed

after traveling.
