Summary of the Event (at least 3 major points; each point will have its own paragraph)

A. Debates over lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues have received increased
attention in recent years. This often happens when societies emerging from violent
ethnonational conflict. Northern Ireland is a paradigmatic case of a society violently
divided by ethnonational groups, British unionists who wish to remain part of the United
Kingdom vs. Irish nationalists who want the reunification of Ireland.
B. Concerns about the sexual purity and activities of women, however, are not the only
way that sexuality arises as an issue in nationalist discourse. Male heterosexual activity
and homosocial male bonding around militaristic masculine virtues, such as honour,
patriotism and bravery, are also considered essential for the establishment and survival
of the nation. There is now a growing body of evidence to suggest that Northern Ireland
remains a deeply homophobic society.
C. Significantly there is more negative stance in relation to same-sex marriage and the
teaching of gay and lesbian rights in schools than those who are not. Homophobic
attitudes have a long and deep-seated tradition in Northern Ireland, and this appears to
be particularly the case when views among the Protestant community are considered.
our Opinion of the Event (at least 3 sentences).
Y
I believe that everyone should be treated the same, whether it's their race, gender, or what
gender you prefer to date. I understand where religion comes into play on the subject but at the
same time, no one has the right to judge. Northern Ireland is full of Catholics so stopping the
situation and allowing gay and lesbian rights to be a normal thing, will probably never happen.

Relate your Event to a Historical Event (compare and contrast with current event).
An event that could be related to the LGBT community and their rights in Northern Ireland is the
Civil Rights Movement. African Americans were fighting for equality just like the LGBT
community, they are just like everyone else but aren't seen that way. Even though these
problems are in very different times, they still faced or face verbal abuse, abuse, and other
things.

My event is related to nations and nationalism because the people of Northern Ireland have
extreme patriotism that feel that allowing gay and lesbians the right to marry and for the schools
to teach their rights in schools, is just not acceptable for most of them. They feel as if being gay
or lesbian is a threat to the very survival and reproduction of the nation.
