How Does Changing from Thai program to International Program Affect

Students Learning?

Many students who moved from Thai program to MUIDS get affected in many ways such as

adapting their learning styles, improving their English skills as well as putting more effort in

learning. The purpose of this research report is to identify the effects of changing from Thai

program to international program on new MUIDS students. The pieces of information found in

this research report are based on four online articles and interviews. First, an article entitled

International Education Systems describes about an International organization that offers a

program of study from pre-school to University level. Second, Bryan Smith writes an article

entitled Advantages of studying in an international school, shows the good points of studying

in International school. Third, an article entitled, The Thai Education System explains about

the different levels and the grading system in Thai schools. Last, an article called Advantages of

Thailand Education, discusses about various reasons that make Thai Education becomes a good

option to choose. Moreover, the researcher interviewed seven students who moved from Thai

program in 10:02 class at MUIDS.

Changing from Thai to International Program

Many parents move their children from Thai schools to International schools because

International school uses internationally-recognized curriculum such as International

Baccalaureate program. International Education Systems offer a study program from Early

Childhood Education (pre-school) through to University level. According to Smith (2010), he

said that the IB education model is accepted in many continents and smoothens entry into

college, and build children to be more competitive in the real world. International schools have

students from different countries and also teachers from across the globe, so students are exposed

to different cultures and lifestyles. Normal Thai school students need to try hard to get in this

kind of global exposure. Students learn not only to be skilled at studying but also to be confident

and competitive as well as having sportsmanship. According to Bam Tanyathon, a student from

grade10, said that she changed from Thai program to International program because she wanted

to improve her English skill and get ready for the university. Another student from grade10 also

said that she wants to study in another country, so she needed to prepare herself before going

there.

The Effect of Changing from Thai Program to International Program

Changing from Thai program to International program can make students get a bad grade

and they will be pressured from the new curriculum. This pressure from education taken from

school can cause students to higher stress and depression according to Denise Pope of Stanford

University (Pressures to succeed affect student health, 2011). Also, 67% of the schools that

Stanford Medical do research on said that students say higher level stress come from school

stuff. According to Teenny Tanwarat, a student from grade10, said that she had to study harder

more than other students. Another student from grade 10, said that she had to learn more about

vocab and reading as she cant instantly understand the word and the sentence.

Also, Nattawan Pop said that she had to try harder than students who came from international

program. And also, in the first quarter of English class, she needed to work on her speech for

public speaking, Pop said that it was really hard for her because she never did like this.

Moreover, another student from 1002, Rujira Noey, said that vocabulary in the elective classes

was very difficult for her because in Thai program, she did not know this kind of vocabulary

before. So, she needed to study harder than international students.

Students Adapting from Thai to International Program

Students who come from Thai program to International program have many ways to

adapt themselves such as watching English movie, tutoring, reading English book. Transferring

from Thai program to international program requires the students to adapt themselves to a

different environment. According to interviews of some students in Thai program, they have to

improve their English and change their and adapting their learning styles. According to Pon

Kanyaluck, a student from grade10 said that she had to improve in listening; and also another

student, Teenny Tanwarat student from grade10 said that she has to adapt to using English to

communicate in class as well as different English style of each teacher. Also Cartoon Thanaree

said that she had to improve her listening and reading skill, vocabulary and communicating with

teachers. Also Bam Tanyatorn, a student from grade 10 said that she has to improve herself a lot.

Before school opened, she had to watch YouTube videos all day to get used to hearing English

and in quarter 1, she had to practice speaking skills because she had to do public speaking that

she had never done before. Many times during the class, she didnt understand what teachers

teach, so she had to study outside class and at home. She also needed to be on time because

teachers gave homework online.

Conclusion

The purpose of this report was to identify the effects of changing from Thai program to

international program on new MUIDS students. This research reports concluded that most of

new students that come from Thai program to International program have adapted themselves in

terms of language, communication and learning style not only just to fit in but to get the most out

of the school experience. This research report recommends further studies on the difference

between Thai program and International program and the long term effects of students moving

from Thai program to International program.
