1
Preferences Settings
Note: Caterpillar cable 305-5528 is required. ECMs capable of Ethernet flashing will also detect
over J1939 via Cat Communication Adapter.

1. From the Communications tab (1) of the Preferences dialog, select Ethernet Direct
Connection (2).

2. Ensure that the appropriate Ethernet adapter has been selected (3). Ethernet adapter
descriptions will vary by manufacturer.

Note: If the Ethernet adapter does not appear as a selection, check the Device Manager
to ensure Ethernet adapter drivers haves been installed and the device is working
properly.

2
Physical Network Connectivity

1. Using Caterpillar cable part number 305-5528, make sure the deutsch-style connector is
plugged securely into Ethernet Service Port on the machine and RJ45 connector end is
plugged securely into the network adapter slot on the PC.

2. Verify that the status lights on the PC Ethernet port are illuminated. Generally, there are
two lights: one light is continuously illuminated and the other light flashes according to
network activity. On some ports there may be only a single light that flashes with network
activity.
a. If no status light is illuminated, there is a physical wiring problem between the
ECM and the PC. Verify continuity of the cable and/or substitute a different
cable.
b. If a status light is red, consult the documentation for the network adapter. The
lights are typically green, amber, orange, or yellow under normal conditions.

3
Verify Windows Network Settings

IP Address
1. Launch the service tool and go to Utilities>Winflash

2. Attempt to connect to ECM using Ethernet. Note: An ECM does not actually have to be
detected in order to perform the following procedures.

3. Leave the Winflash window while performing the remaining steps in this section of the
troubleshooting guide.

4. Open Command Prompt: Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt

5. Type ipconfig /all and press Enter. A screen similar to the following will be displayed:

6. Verify IP Address starts with 165.26.78.x, where x is a number between 1 and 245. If
multiple IPv4 addresses are listed, verify that any address matches the pattern.

7. If no IP Address is present, verify the network connectivity and also ensure that the
OIPNet Service is running. See below.

4
OIPNet Service

Note: The service tool uses a Windows service to perform certain networking activities. If the
Windows service does not appear, the log file does not exist, or the messages inside the log file
do not match what is expected, call the service tool help desk.

1. While Winflash is still running, access Run:

Windows XP: click Start>Run
Windows Vista or Windows 7: click the Start button and type Run into the Start
Search box.

2. Type services.msc and click OK.

3. Verify that OIPNetService appears in the list of services, and select the entry.

5
4. If the service is not started, double-click on OIPNetService in the right pane.

The following dialog displays the properties of the service. Click the "Start" button to
start the service.

6
The following dialog will be displayed:

5. If service does not start, reinstall the service tool or call the help desk for further
assistance.

7
VPN/Firewall/Antivirus Software

Network filtering software, firewall software, and VPN software can interfere with ECM
communications. Network filtering software and firewall software can block traffic going to or
coming from the ECM. VPN software may route traffic intended for the ECM to a different
network instead, such as a corporate network.

To troubleshoot this issue, perform the following steps:

1. Remove any air card/cellular card from the PC. The use of the air card/cellular card can
affect how information is routed on the network.

2. Temporarily disable any VPN software. Note: This action prevents the PC from
accessing the corporate network and may also prevent access to the Internet.
a. Right-click on the VPN icon in the system tray. This icon may include, but is not
limited to, one of the following:

b. If a Disconnect option exists in the menu, click the option.

c. If right-clicking the VPN icon brings up a VPN dialog, click the Disconnect
button or select the menu option on the dialog.

3. Temporarily disable any firewall software. Note: This action is not recommended if the
PC is connected to the Internet or any networks other than the product. Be sure to re-
enable the firewall software as soon as access to the Internet or any non-product
networks is required.

4. If firewall or VPN software is interfering with the ability to detect and flash ECMs over
Ethernet, contact the IT/IS department responsible for the PC on which the service tool
is running. The firewall or VPN software should be programmed to have rules or
exceptions to allow communication on the following Internet ports for a 165.26.78.0/23
IP address space.
Sending and receiving UDP broadcasts on port 31580
Sending an outgoing FTP connection request to an FTP server on ports > 1023
Accepting an incoming FTP data connection request from an FTP server on ports
>1023 (i.e. FTP client in active mode)
Sending and receiving FTP command data on ports 20 and 21

Windows 7 Network Settings

Check the status of the connection:

1. Click the Start button and access the Control Panel

2. Click View network status and tasks

3. When the Network and Sharing Center dialog is displayed, select the Change Adapter
Settings option.

9
4. Verify that the selected network adapter has a status of Connected.

5. If the network adapter has a status of Network cable unplugged, Not connected or
Disabled, then the adapter is not plugged into the ECM properly, the cable is faulty, the
adapter is disabled, or the adapter has a problem.
Verify connections as described above in this section.
Verify continuity of the cable and/or substitute a different cable.
Verify that the network adapter is enabled and working proper

10
6. If the network adapter has a status showing a network name (e.g. Machine Service
Bay, etc.) or an internet domain (e.g. na.cat.com, etc.), the adapter is connected to a
network and not connected to an ECM. Check your cables and make sure you are
connected to with Caterpillar cable 305-5528 to the Ethernet service port on the
machine.

If the cables are connected properly, this issue is likely caused by VPN software that has
not been properly disabled. Please refer to the VPN/Firewall/Antivirus Software section
for more information.

11
Verify that the network adapter is automatically detecting the network speed:
1. Right-click on the network connection and select Properties

2. When the connection properties dialog displays, click the Configure button

3. When the network adapter properties dialog displays, click the Advanced tab. Look for
a property that sets the speed or speed/duplex and verify that the adapter is set to
automatically detect the speed.

12
Disable the Caterpillar Machine Network Connection

Right-click on the connection and select Disable.

Note: This connection must be re-enabled in order to transfer data with VIMSpc.

Disable any air card or cellular network connection, such as Verizon Wireless
VZAccess.

Right-click on the connection and select Disable.

Note: This connection may need to be re-enabled in order to connect to the corporate network
or to use certain Internet based features in the service tool.

13
Windows XP Network Settings

Check the status of the connection:

1. Click the Start button and access the Control Panel

2. Click Network and Internet Connections

3. Click Network Connections

14

15
Verify that the network adapter is automatically detecting the network speed:
1. Right-click on the network connection and select Properties

2. When the connection properties dialog displays, click the Configure button

3. When the network adapter properties dialog displays, click the Advanced tab. Look for
a property that sets the speed or speed/duplex and verify that the adapter is set to
automatically detect the speed.

16
Disable the Caterpillar Machine Network Connection

Right-click on the connection and select Disable.

Note: This connection must be re-enabled in order to transfer data with VIMSpc.

Disable any air card or cellular network connection, such as Verizon Wireless
VZAccess.

Right-click on the connection and select Disable.

Note: This connection may need to be re-enabled in order to connect to the corporate network
or to use certain Internet based features in the service tool.
