Lesson Plan For 5th Grade Nelson

Objective
- Using knowledge of an age, students will be able to match a scenario to a type of
development
Teks 2A
- Relates principles on theories of human development to teaching and training
situations
Materials
1.) Signs
2.) Tape
3.) Laptop
4.) Prezi
5.) Outline paper
6.) Sign posters for activity
Anticipatory Setting
Given a dotted outline of a circle, we will have each student trace the circle, and ask the class as
whole if they were able to trace the outline. Afterward begin explaining how this activity may be
challenging to a four to five year old who has not developed the fine motor skills to do so.

Instructional Input/Modeling
1.) Jenny will explain her presentation using Prezi over physical development
(including talking specifically about the average heights, weights, losing teeth, gross and
fine motor development)
2.) Brandon will explain Social and Emotional development using prezi
3.) Phoebe will explain Intellectual development using Prezi
4.) Jenny uses Prezi to explain special needs and challenges (speech development
difficulties, preparing for school, and personal challenges)
5.) Moving into the activity, Jenny will explain the activity to the group. (a student
will act out a given scenario over one of the following: physical, social, emotional,
intellectual, and special needs/ challenges developments. The class will then decide
which development the scenario is and walk to the designated corner of where the certain
development is located)
6.) Brandon will ask for volunteers and pick a student to give them the scenario to act
out

Checking for Understanding

During the activity we will have the students who went to incorrect stations tell us why they
chose this station and then we will go over why the correct station is what it is.

Guided Practice
The instructions will act as the guided practice. As well as the presentation before the activity.
We will discuss the correct answers during the activity to help the rest of the class.
Independent Practice
Were going to be playing a game known as five corners where Brandon will come up with a
situation for all the children to reenact afterward we will have them choose one of the five
corners that they believe matches the cognitive development of the situation that was reenacted.
Each corner has a label of physical development, social development, emotional development,
intellectual development, or challenges and special needs of our age group. Once everyone has
decided what they believe the development must represent. We will have each corner explain
why this answer is the correct one.

Closure
We will ask for a real life example of anyone who has see these types of development in four or
five year olds. This is an open ended question and we will accept a few volunteers who are
willinging to share.

Time
Approx. 30 minutes
