1. INTRODUCCIN
1.1 PRESENTACIN

usan materiales granulares sueltos o tratados.
3. Sub-base

Otra fuente bibliogrfica importante es Rigid Pavement Analysis and Design, pues

Portugal.

analtico de elementos finitos. El nico resultado que aparece en SCOPUS,
Verification of falling weight deflectometer backanalysis using a dynamic finite

1, y del libro Highway Engineering: Pavements, Materials and Control of Quality, de

AMADEUS (http://www-mctrans.ce.ufl.edu/mct/) sigue activa y actualizada a 2015.

Washington y Maine, y el Washington Department of Transportation (WDOT).

Design of new and rehabilitated pavement structures (VIII en el apartado 4.1.1.1) o la

Elementos Finitos e introducir nuevas capacidades.
artculo de 2013, Modeling of slab-foundation friction in jointed concrete pavements
under nonlinear thermal gradient or traffic loads, que analiza efectos de temperatura

Oregon Tech (http://www.oit.edu/academics/degrees/civil-engineering/faculty/roger-
and rutting strain analysis on lime stabilized subgrades to develop a pavement design
chart, localizado con el portal SCOPUS.
5.1.17 KENSLABS

Unidos, desarrollada por la American Association of State Highway and Transportation

amena.
5.1.19 MICHPAVE

Dichos artculos se titulan The NOAH software:

5.1.22 RISC

Transportation Systems Center, dependiente del United States Department of

ALIZE, BISAR/SPDM, CIRCLY, EVERFE, ICAFIR, MEPDG y SW-1.

its Impact in Life Cycle of Asphalt Pavements". Revista De La Construccion 11
(1): 101-118. 10-6-2015: www.scopus.com.
In recent years a discussion of the technical-economic feasibility of introduce the heavy load
trucks (CAT) in goods transport fleet was started. This truck configurations overpass the maximum gross
weight of 45 t permitted in Chile. In Chile there not exist experience of using this type of trucks, whence is
relevant to study the global impact of it over the interurban transport system. This paper discusses the
impact of heavy load trucks over asphalt pavements. Using a mechanistic-empirical framework, the
impact of two types of CAT, long and short bitrn, and a one and two units 45 tons trucks were compared
along the life-cycle of the pavement. Assessment considers different pavement configurations, weather
conditions and traffic levels, typical of the Bio Bio region. The mechanistic-empirical assessment was
performed using the Alize-LCPC pavement design tool and the deterioration models of the Asphalt
Institute. For comparing deteriorations, the life-cycle was assessed using the Miner Law implemented in
the Mechanist-Empirical Pavement Design Guide, MEPDG. Results show that the one unit truck induces
the greater damage over the pavement and that the two unit truck induces the lower damage. The long
bitren (75 tons) induce a slightly lower impact than the short bitren. However it was found evidence that
the CAT induce the greater rutting in the pavement surface, which increases linearly if the gross weight
of the truck increases.

The views of the author on the verification of falling weight deflectometer backanalysis by using a
dynamic finite element simulation was discussed. The aim was to check different backcalculation
procedures through forward calculations, using dynamic finite element programs such as AXIDIN and
CAPA 3D. The approach was used with the results of Dynatest's program ELMOD. ELMOD takes the

nonlinearity of the subgrade into consideration through a simplified relationship, which captures the
most important aspects of nonlinearity.
This paper is aimed at describing the most distinctive features of the pavement design method
known as Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide and to compare it with other renowned
methodologies, while emphasizing its advantages and disadvantages. The MEPDG can accurately predict
damage evolution, thus helping to choose the most appropriate design for new pavements or to schedule
the conservation of the already existing ones. After analyzing different pavement design and management
methods, the MEPDG stands out as the most comprehensive one as it takes into account and properly
combines the greatest number of factors that affect the pavement. Therefore, some countries outside the
USA have already imported and calibrated this method, what, at the same time, allows the scientific
community to carry out comparative studies and improve its small deficiencies.
In this paper, roads analysis software bisar 3.0 be used to build an elastic layered system analysis
model for cement stabilized macadam base. Different construction methods and structures contact
conditions between the layers were comprehensive considered based on the actual pavement structure, in
order to analyze the internal stress-strain state of cement stabilized macadam. The results show that
interlayer contact conditions is approximately smooth state when cement stabilized macadam base used
the traditional two layered construction method, which may occur structural damage between cement
stabilized macadam base caused by partial stress concentration. However, the interlayer contact
conditions is approximately completely continuous state when used the overall construction methods, and
the stress-strain state of cement stabilized macadam can significantly improve by changing interlayer
contact conditions. Finally, by changing the construction methods for to change interlayer contact
conditions, the stress-strain state of cement stabilized macadam can be effectively improved, and the road
performance and service life also be significantly improved.
The application of finite element modelling for assumed mesh elements is limited for asphalt
mixtures because of the inclusion of air voids within the structure. A multiphase finite element (FE) model
was applied to consider the effect of air voids on the properties of asphalt mixtures. The virtual
microstructure of an asphalt mixture was incorporated into the FE model from the X-ray CT images of
asphalt specimens. Considering the asphalt mixture as viscoelastic, the mechanical properties determined
from laboratory tests were applied to the FE model. Analysis was performed on a representative volume
element using the concept of continuum damage mechanics. It was found that X-ray CT images can be
converted into a finite element mesh of the real geometry of the asphalt sample. It was also found from

the analysis that the mesh generated from the actual geometry account of the stress concentrations due to
air void distribution compared with the assumed simplified geometry. The FE model was also analysed
using CAPA 3D to give a validation of the results.
Currently, no direct solution exists that provides the pavement in situ layer moduli from deflection
measurements. Current methods evaluate the pavement layer moduli from deflection measurements by
using either empirical approaches or static layered elastic computer programs with iterative solutions. In
this study, mechanistically based typical curves and tables are developed to evaluate the moduli of the
four highway pavement layers - surface, base, subbase, and subgrade - from the Dynaflect measurements
based on both static and dynamic analyses. The curves and tables are developed by using the Chevron
computer program for the static analysis and the DYNAMIC computer program for the dynamic analysis.
The results are applicable to a large number of typical combinations of layer thicknesses and material
moduli.
Thin surfaced asphalts are designed in a similar manner to spray sealed asphalts considering only
rutting as the major mode of failure while there is no consideration for fatigue in the current mechanistic
empirical pavement design method adopted by Austroads. However, sprayed seal surfacing are less
sensitive to vertical deflection compared to thin surfaced asphalts. Thin surfaced asphalts are commonly
prematurely failed by fatigue before any major rutting failure. In this research, the Austroads tolerable
deflection criteria was investigated utilizing deflection and cumulative traffic data from 30 thin asphalt
pavement sections from Queensland. The data showed that the current Austroads tolerable deflection
criterion is largely overestimating the design life of these pavement sections. A new calibrated tolerable
deflection criterion was developed. The calibrated tolerable deflection criterion was used with synthetic
deflection data and pavement responses generated by multilayer elastic analysis using Circly software for
200 pavement sections to develop a new subgrade criterion. The new subgrade criterion is designed to
limit the maximum pavement deflection to be within the calibrated tolerable deflection. By limiting the
maximum deflection of the thin asphalt pavements to the new calibrated tolerable deflection, it is
expected that surface curvature will be reduced and therefore the fatigue life of these pavements will be
significantly improved and it will limit the premature failures of these surfaces. The new criterion

Five computer programs - two 2-D axisymmetric finite-element programs (ILLI-PAVE and MICH-
PAVF), one 3-D finite element program (ABAQUS), and two multilayered elastic-based programs
(DAMA and KENLAYER) - are evaluated to establish the most appropriate one for routine pavement
structural analysis. Results show that for linear and nonlinear analyses, only DAMA and MICH-PAVE
satisfy the natural boundary conditions in which the vertical stresses equal the imposed contact pressure
of 689 kPa. For linear analysis, MICH-PAVE gives the intermediate maximum surface deflection,
compressive strain, and tensile strain; for nonlinear analysis, DAMA yields the intermediate maximum
surface deflection, compressive strain, and tensile strain. The natural boundary condition is also satisfied
in DAMA, and dual-wheel loading can also be considered in computations. These results suggest that
DAMA is the most appropriate computer program to use for routine analyses of flexible pavements.
An attempt is made in this paper to use a computer-based analysis process developed by Asphalt
Institute to study the behaviour of flexible pavements, which includes the assessment of structural
parameters like stresses, strains, deflections as well as the life of the pavement. This exercise would not
only help the analyst in assessing the behaviour of flexible pavements in the prevailing context but also
how the existing structure would last in terms of the number of years as well as the load repetitions which
the road can withstand.
During the past 20 years, more fundamental mechanistic or analytic models for asphalt pavement
structural behavior have been developed. These models use fundamental material properties, such as
dynamic modulus and Poisson's ratio, and failure criteria based on stresses or strains. They can be used
for in-depth structural analysis of pavement structures for a wide variety of materials and load
conditions. The computer program DAMA, which incorporates these concepts, was developed by The
Asphalt Institute for use in preparing design charts for its Thickness Design. The program is described in
some detail, and examples are given of how the program may be used to study different design situations.

In previous studies (Fall et al., 2002), we had underlined the importance to have reliable
characteristics to allow an optimal design of road structures. The research done in Senegal for the last
ten years or so permits to pronounce now amply on the geotechnical reasons of the premature ruin of
road structures. The main problem of the weak life span of the road structures is due to an under-
estimated design caused by the use of inappropriate characteristics with no control in the numerical
codes of road design as Alize III or Ecoroute of the LCPC. In situ investigation done since then with
complementary experimental works permits to have reliable information on local subgrades, the most
common gravel lateritic materials, roadmaking aggregates and finally the laterite-cement. This last
material was the object of particular attention, bound to its specificity and especially by the fact that all
base or sub-base layers in Senegal is prepared with. Finally, a fine analysis of the interrelationships

between these features, their strength parameters and their modulus of elasticity permits to have now
tools of choice to do reasonable road design. The done applied boards give satisfaction. It is then
question now to define new norms/standards and specifications in road geotechnique. The present article
is more amply about results gotten on the laterite-cement, essential element of the road construction in
the whole african tropical zone. The results gotten on the surfacing materials as well as a methodology
study of the subgrade will also be exposed.

The model developed tries to predict the stresses and strains of the structure of the pavement in a
more real way, doing a lineal elastic structural analysis in three dimensions with capacity to model loads
of double axes, that which constitutes an advance regarding twodimensional axisymmetrical models that
only represent the state tense-deformational of the pavement under loads of simple axes. Earlier stages of
this research showed two-dimensional models under different load scenarios, league between layers and
nonlinear constitutive models, however the purpose is to move towards analysis methodology stress-
strain state under standard loads. The model was implemented in the Algor program and a comparison
with the Elsym5 multilayer freeware was performed. The results warn the existence of shear stress
concentrations that can be causing major flaws that are not considered in traditional design methods
which could lead to the possibility of reassessed. The author; licensee Universidad Nacional de

Based on Deflection Basin Parameters". 28-6-2015: www.scopus.com.
The structural design of concrete pavements according to AASHTO and PCA methods makes use
of modulus of reaction (k) from the subgrade and subbase/subgrade system as parameter to calculate
slab thickness. Conventionally, the k-values must be determined through NDT testing that is expensive
and lengthy. The objective of this paper is to present a correlation between k-values and deflection
measurements, which are easier and cheaper to obtain; thereby giving the inspector a faster method to
determine and check the desired k-values. The correlations are results of a computer simulation with the
ELSYM-5 software program. The resulting models from the maximum deflection and area parameter had
good results, unlike the radius of curvature. These models provide improved ability and agility in the
evaluation of subgrade layers and the subbase of concrete pavement, when compared to the plate bearing
test. 2009 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

A computer program named FEACONS III (Finite Element Analysis of CONcrete Slabs) was
developed in response to a need for a suitable analytical model to analyze the behavior of concrete
pavements effectively and realistically. The program has been used extensively in the analysis of existing
concrete pavements and a test road in Florida. The analytical model and computational procedure used
by FEACONS III are described in detail. The FEACONS III program was shown to be both versatile and
effective in the analysis of concrete pavement response. The modeling of the edge stiffness and the linear
joint stiffness and torsional joint stiffness produces fairly realistic analytical results. It is hoped that this
paper can enhance proper usage of the program and increase the awareness of highway engineers of the
importance of the effects of temperature, joint, edge, and subgrade conditions to concrete pavement
response.

The feasibility of using concrete containing recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in concrete
pavement applications was evaluated. Concrete containing 0, 10, 20, and 40% of RAP were produced in
the laboratory and evaluated for their properties that are relevant to performance of concrete pavements.
Results of the laboratory testing program indicate that compressive strength, splitting tensile strength,
flexural strength, and elastic modulus of the concrete decreased as the percentage of RAP increased. The
coefficient of thermal expansion and drying shrinkage did not appear to be significantly affected by RAP
content. When a finite element analysis was performed to determine the maximum stresses in typical
concrete pavements in Florida under critical temperature and load conditions, the maximum stresses in
the pavement were found to decrease as the RAP content of the concrete increased, due to a decrease in
the elastic modulus of the concrete. Though the flexural strength of the concrete decreased as RAP was
incorporated in the concrete, the resulting maximum stress to flexural strength ratio for the concrete was
reduced as compared with that of a reference concrete with no RAP. This indicates that using a concrete
containing RAP could possibly result in improvement in the performance of concrete pavements.

The deflection basins caused by a 9-kip FWD load were used in developing a regression equation
to estimate the subgrade modulus K(s); the range varying from 0.1 to 1.2 kci depending on the sub-base
materials. With these values, the structural performance of a concrete pavement was analyzed using the
FEACONS V program.
Five instrumented full-size concrete slabs were constructed and tested under accelerated pavement
testing by means of a Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS) to study the behavior of concrete replacement slabs
at early age and the effects of concrete properties on the performance of the replacement slabs. The
maximum stresses in the concrete slabs were calculated using the FEACONS (Finite Element Analysis of
CONcrete Slabs) program, which considers the effects of the applied load, temperature differential in the
slab, elastic modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete, slab thickness, joint
characteristics and effective subgrade stiffness. The model used was calibrated by comparing the
computed strains with the measured strains from embedded strain gauges in the test slabs which were
loaded by the HVS. The use of maturity method to determine the flexural strength of the in-place concrete
at early age was evaluated in this study. It was found that the maturity method was convenient to use and
produced reliable determination of the flexural strength of the in-place concrete. Investigation was also
made to evaluate the use of the maximum stress to flexural strength ratio of the concrete at the early age
as an indicator of potential performance of a concrete replacement slab. This was done by comparing the
stress strength ratio with the observed performance of test slabs in this study. This method was found to
be effective in predicting the potential performance of the replacement slabs. A systematic method for
evaluation of concrete mixes for potential performance in replacement slab was recommended as the
result of this study.

Materials Research. Vol. 857. 29-6-2015: www.scopus.com.
The curling stresses of rigid pavement are the result of in-situ and built-in temperature gradient. A
profound investigation on the reasons causing longitudinal cracking (LC) was conducted in this paper.
Based on finite element method (FEM) analysis results obtained from ISLAB 2000, the wheel load stress
generated by a single axle load that is applied along the transverse joints is considered to be the critical
loading condition for longitudinal cracking. Nonlinear environmental stress due to the curling of
Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) was analyzed using the numerical program developed in this study; the
paving time within a day has a significant influence on the curling stresses at the top portion of PCC slab
at the critical loading position for longitudinal cracking. Research in this paper proposed an analytical
method to determine the influence of the paving condition (day time and night time) on the built-in setting
gradient and its effect on the in-situ effective equivalent temperature differential. (2014) Trans Tech

Since the development of ILLI-SLAB software in 1979, researchers have made significant
contributions to the capabilities of tools for jointedpavement analysis. These efforts have culminated in
some commercial and noncommercial software packages such as JSLAB and ISLAB2000. Even though
JSLAB has undergone several improvements since 1986, the underlying core of the software maintains
the characteristics of the initial ILLI-SLAB code. A thorough review of JSLAB2004 revealed that it would
be beneficial to redesign the software completely to take advantage of modern computer resources and
finite element modeling techniques available today. For this reason, a new analysis tool was developed
that significantly improves on the efficiency and capabilities of JSLAB2004. The improvements led to
NYSLAB, a tool that (a) has no limitations on the number of jointed slabs and foundation layers analyzed,
(b) more accurately models the contact between debonded slabs and between the bottom slab and the top
foundation layer, (c) models the foundation layers beyond the edge of the slabs to predict more accurately

the edge deflections and stresses, and (d) significantly improves the capabilities for modeling a nonlinear
thermal profile on all slab layers to predict more accurately their curling response. A series of
parametric studies was conducted to evaluate the performance of NYSLAB and highlight the new and
improved capabilities.

Roadbeds made up of weak coastal subgrade soil, subjected to changes in moisture contents due to
seasonal wetting and drying or due to any other reason, undergo volumetric changes leading to pavement
deterioration. Two important factors that govern pavement design are soil subgrade strength and traffic
loading. There has been a move towards the use of the mechanistic approach in pavement design in many
developed countries. The scope of this study is to increase the subgrade strength with the addition of lime
to fulfill design specification, this leads to economy in the structural thicknesses of the pavement on
subgrade strengths of 2%, 3% and 4% CBR values with traffic intensities of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 million

carried out to determine the tensile strain at the bottom of bituminous, lime stabilized layers and
compressive strain on lime stabilized subgrades. Also, the design catalogues have been developed for the

The purposes of this study were to establish the difference between empirical and mechanistic
empirical approaches in the flexible pavement design and to quantify the effects of mean annual
precipitation and temperature on the flexible pavement distresses using the Mechanistic-Empirical
Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) software. Seventy-six specific locations from 13 states throughout the
USA were selected based on different climate conditions using virtual climate stations based on the
interpolation from the nearest weather stations prior to meeting the objectives. Subsequently, analysis
was conducted based on the predicted distresses, including longitudinal cracking, transverse cracking,
alligator cracking, asphalt concrete rutting and total pavement permanent deformation. Generally, the
pavement structure and materials have been set as constant to control the effects of material on the
results. On the basis of the MEPDG analysis, the longitudinal cracking of flexible pavement is
significantly affected by both factors (temperature and precipitation), particularly in wet climatic regions.
The mean annual temperature has a great influence on the alligator cracking, transverse cracking and
permanent deformation of flexible pavement. However, neither factors demonstrated a significant impact
on the predicted International Roughness Index of flexible pavement surfaces. 2015 Taylor & Francis

Seasonal deformation of unsurfaced roads was observed over several years and was studied using
pavement deterioration models and finite-element analysis. The Mathematical Model of Pavement
Performance is a model designed for pavement deterioration prediction and was successfully used for
seasonal deterioration modeling because of its flexibility in defining the pavement structure, properties,
and seasonal impact. However, these types of models are designed for highways and are somewhat
limited in soils characterization and manipulation of the forces at the road-tire interface. Therefore, a
three-dimensional dynamic finite-element model of a wheel rolling over soil was applied to simulate local
vehicle traffic on a secondary unpaved road. These simulations were used to study the effects of vehicle
speed, load, suspension system, wheel torque, and wheel slip on rutting and washboard formation.

Faced with the increasing demands set on asphalt pavements, design engineers can benefit more
than ever from rational pavement analysis tools such as multi-layer stress and strain calculation
programs. In practice, the potential of such programs can however only be plainly used if they are
incorporated into more general systems, focused on true "engineering tasks" such as the interpretation of
the calculated results in terms of pavement performance, sensitivity analysis, ... Such "second generation"
tools already exist but are very much tailormade to specific needs and thus restricted in use. This has
urged NYNAS to re-think this approach and to develop a software of such a level of flexibility that it can
easily be used or adapted by pavement engineers working according to different design methods and
criteria. The NOAH software (developed under WINDOWS) is based on automated computation loops
which allow to investigate the effect of varying design parameters. The software incorporates a Database

This technique consists in replacing a continuous data distribution by an equivalent discrete distribution

is shown to be related to the shape of the "transfer function" which relates the considered input
parameter to the calculated pavement response (e.g., a stress). The potential of the method is illustrated
by an example. The NOAH software is a very powerful computation tool by which the user can investigate
the sensitivity of pavement performance (as related to calculated stresses and strains) to variations of any
of the involved input parameters (structural, environmental, loading). It incorporates the
ROSENBLUETH method and many other specific facilities such as a built-in "Formula Generator". This
confers NOAH an extreme flexibility so that it can easily be used by pavement engineers working
according to different design methods.

This paper discusses the development and verification of a stress analysis model (RISC) and the
use of this model in a program for the design of rigid pavements. RISC is the result of coupling finite
element plate theory with multilayer elastic layer theory, and consists of a 2-layer rigid slab resting on a
semi-infinite 3-layer elastic solid foundation. The specific features of RISC are described. Model
verification includes comparison with known solutions whenever possible; however, as the RISC model is
an extension beyond the scope of existing theories, qualitative comparisons are also included. The
pavement design program uses RISC for stress analysis; however, the input requirements have been
drastically simplified for the convenience of the user. The output includes the expected design life.
Since high-quality aggregate materials are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive,
optimizing the use of locally available materials for aggregate bases and granular subbases on the basis
of cost and mechanistic properties linked to pavement performance has become an economically viable
alternative. This study investigated the effect of quality of unbound aggregate material on conventional
flexible pavement performance in Minnesota through a mechanistic-empirical pavement design approach.
A comprehensive matrix of conventional flexible pavement layer thicknesses and mechanistic design
moduli was carefully designed to conduct mechanistic analyses for the Minnesota Department of
Transportation flexible pavement design program (MnPAVE) with the MnPAVE program for pavement
sections in two climatic regions in Minnesota. The type and the quality classes of unbound aggregate
materials, identified as high, medium, and low, were characterized with stress-dependent resilient
modulus (MR) models from a statewide laboratory-tested aggregate M R database. Despite conventional
wisdom to the contrary, in some cases the granular subbase material had much higher moduli than the
aggregate base. The typical high, medium, and low modulus values for the aggregate base and granular
subbase layers, determined from the modulus distributions predicted by the nonlinear finite element
program GT-PAVE, were subsequently input during MnPAVE analyses to calculate fatigue and rutting
life expectancies for the comprehensive matrix of pavement structures studied. From the results, use of
locally available and somewhat marginal materials may be quite cost-effective for low-volume roads,
provided that the 20-year design traffic level does not exceed 1.5 million equivalent single-axle loads. A

Resilient modulus (MR) is a key mechanistic pavement analysis input for designing conventional
flexible pavements with unbound aggregate base and granular subbase layers. For satisfactory pavement
design and performance, it is often challenging to determine unbound aggregate layer modulus inputs
when only limited aggregate source property data are available. This paper presents established
correlations between aggregate physical properties and stress-dependent MR characterization model
parameters by utilizing the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) aggregate property
databases. In addition to gradation, percent passing No. 200 sieve (or fines content), moisture content
and dry density, aggregate particle shape properties quantified as Flat and Elongated (F&E) ratio,
Angularity Index (AI) and Surface Texture (ST) index by the University of Illinois Aggregate Image
Analyzer (UIAIA) were also included as predictor variables for developing correlations. A subsequent
Monte Carlo type simulation was performed via the software @RISK to investigate sensitivities of MR to
the various aggregate source properties. It was found that the inclusion of aggregate shape properties
significantly improved the established correlations. On the basis of Monte Carlo simulation results, the
design reliability of the current MnPAVE program Fall input moduli for aggregate base/granular
subbase materials was demonstrated to be greater than the current estimate of 85. ASCE 2011.

elastic or viscoelastic layers is usually used for the pavement analysis. This paper describes a domain
selection for the purpose of a FE model creating of the linear elastic layered half-space and boundary

conditions on borders of that domain. This FE model should guarantee that the key components of
displacements, stresses and strains obtained using ABAQUS program would be in particular identical
with those ones obtained by analytical method using VEROAD program. It to achieve matching results
with both methods is relatively easy for stresses and strains. However, for displacements, using FEM to
obtain correct results is (understandably) highly problematic due to infinity of half-space. This paper
proposes an original method of overcoming these difficulties.

As shown by strains measured on full scale experimental aircraft structures, traffic of slow-moving
multiple loads leads to asymmetric transverse strains that can be higher than longitudinal strains at the
bottom of asphalt pavement layers. To analyze this effect, a model and a software called ViscoRoute have
been developed. In these tools, the structure is represented by a multilayered half-space, the thermo-
viscoelastic behaviour of asphalt layers is accounted by the Huet-Sayegh rheological law and loads are
assumed to move at constant speed. First, the paper presents a comparison of results obtained with
ViscoRoute to results stemming from the specialized literature. For thick asphalt pavement and several
configurations of moving loads, other ViscoRoute simulations confirm that it is necessary to incorporate
viscoelastic effects in the modelling to well predict the pavement behaviour and to anticipate possible
damages in the structure.

VESYS5W Fatigue Cracking Model Using Results from Accelerated Pavement

2015: http://encore.fama.us.es/iii/encore/?lang=spi
Cost effective design methodology demands accurate performance modeling. Fatigue cracking is
one of the major performance indicators in flexible pavement systems. Through literature review, a
decision was made to modify the fatigue cracking model in the original VESYS5 program. The revised
model in VESYS5W has the same basic form as suggested by the Asphalt Institute (AI) and the 2002
Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). The main challenge in modeling fatigue
cracking is to determine appropriate input parameters. Efforts were made to compare the experimental
results of full-scale accelerated pavement testing (APT) to the VESY5W predictions using the material
parameters suggested by Al and the 2002 MEPDG. The test data employed in this paper are obtained
from the full-scale APT conducted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) under a national
pooled fund study TPF-5(019). Test results from five lanes at testing temperatures of 19 degrees C were
utilized in the comparisons. It was found that the VESYS5W prediction using the material parameters
from 2002 MEPDG yielded a much better fit to the experimental results than those using Al material
parameters. The VESYS5W predictions using the Al material parameters always underestimated the
fatigue cracking life. To match experimental results, shift factors were applied. The shift factors ranged
from 0.48 to 3.1 for the predictions using the material parameters from the 2002 MEPDG. However, the
shift factors for the AI material parameters ranged from 3.6 to 14.4. In summary, VESYS5W predictions
using 2002 MEPDG material parameters provided satisfactory fits to the experimental results with
relatively small (<= 3.1) shift factors. Based on the FHWA's APT test results and the VESYS5W analyses,
two equations are recommended for prediction of fatigue cracking in pavements with conventional mix
and with asphalt modifier.
Trucks are considered one of the most important means in transporting. Recently, the tire
designers introduced new wide-base tires to replace the conventional dual tires system. The objective of
this study is to investigate flexible pavement damage due to different heavy multiple axle configurations
with wide-base tires. Several axle configurations including single, tandem, tridem and quad with
conventional and wide-base tires were considered in this study. Two flexible pavement sections were
analyzed, thick and thin pavement sections with thicknesses and material properties representing
majority of the pavement cross-sections. To quantify and compare the damage for thick and thin
pavement sections due to heavy axle load configurations, the forward analyses were conducted using
KENLAYER program to calculate the pavement response. The horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of
the hot mix asphalt and the vertical compressive strain on top of the subgrade and at the middle of each
pavement layers as well as the six consecutive sub-layers of the subgrade soils were calculated from the
structural model. These pavement responses were utilized in the performance models to calculate the two
main pavement distress, fatigue cracking and pavement surface rutting. The strain area model for fatigue
and VESYS rutting model for rutting were utilized to calculate the pavement damage. The Axle Factors
were calculated for each axle configurations to compare the pavement damage due to axles with
conventional and wide-base tires. The results indicate that axle loads with widebase tires impose more
fatigue and rutting damage than axles with conventional tires.
