The Building of Emotion

How can people build others emotion? Normally, feeling always comes from

humans mind and thought that are hard to be controlled by others. Nevertheless, many arts

aim people to get into emotion especially poetry. Describing can form imagination images

inside readers head. Edna St. Vincent Millay uses that way to make readers to be able to

access her poems. Millay was an American poet. She was born on February 22, 1892 and

died on October 19, 1950. She writes a lot of poems by narrating nature which people can

easily access such as Time does not bring relief; you all have lied, What lips my lips have

kissed, and where, and why and Spring. Millay uses nature imagery of mountains, a tree,

and spring to create mood and tone.

Millay writes nature imagery of mountains with melting ice to lead readers to feel

pain because of missing someone. Time does not bring relief; you all have lied is about

woman who does not believe that time can ease her pain because she is still missing her

lover. Even she wants him back but it is impossible. Many year passing do not reduce her

pain so she grumbles that time does not make anything better and everyone lie to her. The

old snows melt from every mountain-side, / And last years leave are smoke in every lane;

(Millay, 1917) is an imagery of mountain showing the mood and tone of this poem. Millay

describes the situation when a thing disappears as it gone like smoke. When snow melt

leaving the mountain and there is only untouchable thing remaining, it reminds readers about

feeling of losing something in their life. In winter, mountains are covered with snow but

when the time pass through, there is no snow anymore. The only thing that is still there

cannot be touched or got by anyone. This condition lead reader into feeling of pain from

missing someone and feeling of gloom that there are no chance to hold it back any longer.
Millay usually uses imagery of nature to build negative feeling and there are many things that

she write about unless mountain for example, a lonely tree.

Nature imagery of a tree left by animals is used for forming mood of loneliness.

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why narrate a story that woman tries to

forget her lover who have kissed her and made many memories with her. However, she cries

at night with lonely feeling. Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one, / Yet knows

its boughs more silent than before: (Millay, 1923) is used as a nature imagery of a tree to

explode feeling of a character. There is a tree with many birds being in. People generally see

many trees like a forest in nature but in this setting there is only one tree which put readers

into feeling of desolation and abandonment. Then, birds start to leave the tree one by one

until there are no more birds sitting on branches. Surrounding becomes silent. We are aimed

to see a picture of someone standing alone like this tree. It emphasizes the time that there is

no one beside you bringing us into the mood of loneliness. Moreover, besides negative

emotion, her nature imagery can create positive mood and tone such as warm mood.

Nature imagery of spring builds warm feeling of joy by describing new beautiful

things during seasons change. Spring is a poem about period of spring month and fake

beauty. In April, the nature present a beauty of itself. It is the condition of turning from

winter to spring. However, there is an irony in this poem. It begins with a beautiful

appearance of spring but in the middle it shows that appearance is lie. There is imagery at the

opening describing spring. An imagery of spring build a positive mood before twist. The sun

is hot on my neck as I observe / The spikes of the crocus. (Millay, 1921). As spring comes,

the weather becomes hot even there has been cold before. The sun shines extremely brightly

since a person can feel hot from it by own neck. It supports readers to see an image of bright

gleaming sun leading us to feel warm. There are spikes of crocus which is a plant that flowers

in spring. Spikes of crocus normally appear on surface of soil while pointing up. We are
going to imagine about those strong beautiful plants flowering among sunshine. Picture of

many beautiful flowers demonstrates new beginning of happiness. This appearance make us

to feel cheerful and glad with the beginning of good things. Poet uses nature imagery to build

readers to imagine picture in their mind and get into mood and tone of poems.

Many Millays poems contain nature imagery making readers to get into feeling of

each poems such as describing of mountains, a tree, and spring. Time does not bring relief;

you all have lied have a mood of pain from imagery of mountains. Lonely feeling in What

lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why is built through a tree. Spring is also used for

forming warm feeling in Spring. All these three poems contain nature imagery of different

things to make us to understand mood and tone from seeing pictures in own mind. Picture is a

great art that can communicate a lot of meaning at one time because imagination cannot be

limited so Millay builds readers feeling by this.

Time does not bring relief; you all have lied

Edna St. Vincent Millay

Time does not bring relief; you all have lied

Who told me time would ease me of my pain!

I miss him in the weeping of the rain;

I want him at the shrinking of the tide;

The old snows melt from every mountain-side,

And last years leaves are smoke in every lane;

But last years bitter loving must remain

Heaped on my heart, and my old thoughts abide.

There are a hundred places where I fear

To go,so with his memory they brim.

And entering with relief some quiet place

Where never fell his foot or shone his face

I say, There is no memory of him here!

And so stand stricken, so remembering him.

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why

Edna St. Vincent Millay

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,

I have forgotten, and what arms have lain

Under my head till morning; but the rain

Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh

Upon the glass and listen for reply,

And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain

For unremembered lads that not again

Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.

Thus in the winter stands the lonely tree,

Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,

Yet knows its boughs more silent than before:

I cannot say what loves have come and gone,

I only know that summer sang in me

A little while, that in me sings no more.

Spring

Edna St. Vincent Millay

To what purpose, April, do you return again?

Beauty is not enough.

You can no longer quiet me with the redness

Of little leaves opening stickily.

I know what I know.

The sun is hot on my neck as I observe

The spikes of the crocus.

The smell of the earth is good.

It is apparent that there is no death.

But what does that signify?

Not only under ground are the brains of men

Eaten by m aggots.

Life in itself

Is nothing,

An empty cup, a flight of uncarpeted stairs.

It is not enough that yearly, down this hill,

April

Comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers.
